She was born in Detroit and moved to Chicago, where she received a bachelor's degree in acting from the The Goodman School of Drama of Northwestern University. To perfect her depiction of blind "Marissa Clark" in "Early Edition" (1996), she has done research for her role with the Chicago Guild of the Blind and has worked with a seeing eye dog. She is the youngest of seven children.

Teaches performance workshop course at DePaul University.

She was nominated for a 1994 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actress in a Principal Role in a Play for "The Ties that Bind", at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
