Watch Films by Larry Jordan

27 March 2012 5:39 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Larry Jordan, occasionally known in more formal circles as Lawrence Jordan, has been making experimental and animation films for half a century now. He grew up in Denver, won a scholarship to Harvard, then dropped out to start a theater back in Colorado with his high school friend, Stan Brakhage. "Stan was always the director," Jordan wrote in a remembrance in the Millennium Film Journal in 2003. "He seemed to have far-reaching radar for locating people and works in the art world. Five of our gang came out to San Francisco in about 1954. (Stan came first — always the avant-garde.) When I arrived, he was living in the basement of poet Robert Duncan and painter Jess Collins. We had one old car, a flatbed trailer for our gear, and about five films between us. So naturally we started out to tour California, showing our wares."

'Hunger Games' Success Proves Dystopia Is the New Supernatural

26 March 2012 2:01 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

From "Nosferatu" to "Twilight," supernatural movies have never gone out of style. Vampires and their monster homies have enjoyed a constant stream of cinematic exposure since the turn of the last century, but they've never been more pervasive than in the last few years, breaking out of horror confines and sparkling their way into other genres.

We'd be naive to say supernaturals are on their way out — they'll never leave, and we wouldn't want them to. But we'd be blind not to notice the creepy new sheriff in town: Dystopia.

As themes go, it's nothing new ("Children of Men," "Blade Runner"... "Idiocracy") but amidst the insane success of "The Hunger Games," studios are snapping up the rights to similar books the moment they land on shelves — and in a few cases, before that.

So move over, monsters. In honor of "The Hunger Games'" record-breaking opening weekend, we're looking at »

Aaron Sims’ Sci-Fi Short Archetype is So Good They’re Making a Movie Version

1 March 2012 8:23 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Aaron Sims’ sci-fi short film “Archetype” is apparently so good, Hollywood took notice and now “Chronicle” producer John Davis will be blowing it up into a full-length feature film, with Sims directing. Curiously, he won’t be writing the script, that will be the job of Guy Busick and Ryan Murphy. Odd, that. You’d think he’d at least get first crack at the script. Anyways, here’s what it’s all about: RL7 is an eight-foot tall combat robot that goes on the run after malfunctioning with vivid memories of once being human. As its creators and the military close in, RL7 battles its way to uncovering the shocking truth behind its mysterious visions and past. The short stars Robert Joy and David Anders of “Heroes” and “Alias” fame. Well, the voice of Anders, anyway. It’s kinda like “Robocop” crossed with “Short Circuit”. Minus the jokes. The short is only 5 minutes long, »

29 February 2012 7:14 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Remember that impressive sci-fi short involving a massive sentient robot that we featured a few months ago called Archetype? (Watch it here.) As predicted, the project has been picked up by Hollywood. THR's Heat Vision is officially reporting that producer John Davis (I, Robot, Eragon, Gulliver's Travels, Predators), who is "riding high off of the surprise success" of Chronicle, has acquired rights to make Archetype into a feature-length movie with director Aaron Sims, a visual effects industry veteran just now making the leap into directing. He'll helm from a screenplay being written by Guy Busick & Ryan Murphy (not the Glee one). Archetype, a 7-minute sci-fi short by Aaron Sims, already racked up views on YouTube and started getting buzz surrounding it being the next District 9; partially because of that scene above where the robot is being interrogated. Producer John Davis, who was one of the people that shepherded Josh Trank and Max Landis’ box office hit Chronicle to the big screen, has zeroed in on another filmmaker with a sci-fi flavoured short film background who he thinks might make the leap. He’s just picked up the rights to Aaron SimsArchetype, which you can watch below.Archetype follows what happens when a hulking war machine suddenly seems to malfunction in the field. It’s brought in for testing and questioning by Jones (Robert Joy) about why it shut down its fellow battle ‘bots with an Em pulse. Josh Trank and Max Landis on 'unique vision' of Chronicle, plus new posters, clips and fans' video results

5 February 2012 4:00 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

High School students Andrew, Matt, and Steve are just like any other teenagers: imperfect, awkward, and a little reckless.

And like so many of us, they're obsessed with chronicling their lives, however mundane - or in their case, however extraordinary. For the teen trio have stumbled upon something that gives them powerful telekinetic abilities.

They're now capable of almost anything. They can move objects just by thinking and crush cars through force of will, and they also learn to fly - the ultimate wish fulfilment. But then things get dark.

What would you do if it happened to you? What would you be capable of?

Those are the intriguing questions posed by Chronicle, now in UK cinemas as it heads into its debut weekend. It's a superhero movie that's not really a superhero movie. On the surface it belongs in the relatively new sub-genre of found footage or Pov (point of view) films, »

Chronicle Preview Q&A with Josh Trank

6 January 2012 3:47 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When the first trailer arrived for Chronicle back in October, I was incredibly intrigued, and also surprised I had never heard of this movie before. Yesterday, I was invited down to the 20th Century Fox lot where director Josh Trank showed a select group of press members six never-before-seen clips from this movie that blends the found-footage and superhero genres in quite amazing ways.

Chronicle centers on Matt (Alex Russell), his awkward cousin Andrew (Dane DeHaan), and Steve (Michael B. Jordan). When Matt and Steve discover a bizarre hole in the Earth at a party, they get Andrew, who documents everything with his new camera, to help because his camera has a light. After exploring this hole/tunnel, the group realizes they have been bestowed with telekinetic abilities, i.e. they can move stuff with their minds. While some have gotten a Jackass meets X-Men vibe from the first trailer, »
