Reese Witherspoon-Robert Pattinson's Water For Elephants Tops Per-Theater Average: Box Office

Robert Pattinson as Jacob, Reese Witherspoon as Marlena in Francis Lawrence's circus drama Water for Elephants Carlos Saldanha's Rio, featuring the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway, continued to — once again barely — lead the North American box office on Wednesday, April 27, grossing $1.55m according to Box Office Mojo. A little over $100k behind Rio was Francis Lawrence's Water for Elephants, starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, and Christoph Waltz. The period romantic drama collected $1.42m at no. 2. For the first time since it opened last Friday, Water for Elephants had the highest per-theater average among the top-twelve movies, $506. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family lost that top position following a steep 29.5% drop-off rate on Wednesday. At no. 3, Madea's Big Happy Family, featuring Perry, Loretta Devine, Isaiah Mustafa, Bow Wow, Shannon Kane, and Cassi Davis, earned $1.11m. Its per-theater average was $486. Featuring Tyler Perry, Loretta Devine, Isaiah Mustafa, Bow Wow, Shannon Kane, and Cassi Davis, Madea's Big Happy Family was down 60% on Monday, earning $2.18m at no. 2. Rio, Water For Elephants, Madea's Big Happy Family Gross Less Than Estimated: Box Office Actuals

25 April 2011 5:39 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Robert Pattinson in Francis Lawrence's Water for Elephants Carlos Saldanha's animated 3D feature Rio, featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jane Lynch, George Lopez, was indeed the top movie on the Us/Canada box-office chart this past Easter weekend, grossing $26.3m according to actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Rio collected $500k less than estimated; even so, it was more than $1m ahead of the no. 2 movie, Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, which actually earned $700k less than reported on Sunday. Overestimation, as so often happens, inflated the figures of most of the top-twelve releases. The Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon-Christoph Waltz drama Water for Elephants took in $700k less than estimated; African Cats $400k less; Hop $300k; Insidious $200k; Soul Surfer $150k; Scream 4 and The Conspirator $100k; and so on. Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family Weaker Than Previous Madeas: Box Office

24 April 2011 2:20 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Tyler Perry in drag as Madea in Perry's own Madea's Big Happy Family Anne Hathaway-Jesse Eisenberg's Rio Biggest Worldwide Box Office Hit of 2011 At a — relatively speaking — disappointing no. 2, Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family, featuring Perry, Loretta Devine, Isaiah Mustafa, Bow Wow, Shannon Kane, and Cassi Davis, trailed behind Carlos Saldanha's Rio this Easter weekend in North America, opening with $25.75m at 2,288 theaters according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Now, that's not a bad figure for a movie that cost a reported $25m (not including distribution/marketing expenses). In fact, Madea's Big Happy Family's $11,254 per-theater average was the highest among the top-twelve movies. Putting things in context, however, makes Madea's Big Happy Family seem both smaller and sadder. Tyler Perry's two previous Madea outings, Madea's Family Reunion (2006) and Madea Goes to Jail (2009), opened (in February) with, respectively, $30m and $41m »

[Review] Madea’s Big Happy Family

24 April 2011 1:36 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I’ve been closely following the Tyler Perry phenomenon, before the film adaptation of Diary of a Mad Black Women. His signature character Madea has achieved a following in off Broadway theatre. Perry has a classic rags to riches tale making work for a market considered under-served by Hollywood, he was smart enough to gain control of his material, owning his own Atlanta-based production company. You should know this, because this is part of the problem. In an academic paper I’d include a footnote referencing Wiseau, Tommy.

Unchecked by a studio system who may want and attempt to make Madea play across a broader audience. Full disclosure: this film appeals to two things I am not, black and female, of which we can have a long debate over the notion of “qualification.” The problem is Madea, although the peace maker is someone who may be considered “human” for »

Box Office Predictions: Madea's Big Happy Family Expected to Make Big, Happy Easter Haul

Predicted Weekend Box Office

Madea's Big Happy Family $30 millionRio $20 millionWater for Elephants $15 millionHop $8.3 millionScream 4 $7.4 millionAfrican Cats $7 millionSoul Surfer $5 millionInsidious $4.8 millionHanna $4.5 millionSource Code $4.2 million

Tyler Perry is poised to be the big man on campus this weekend with his latest Madea offering, Madea's Big Happy Family, projected to pull in about $30 million. The last two films in the series featuring the popular character opened to $30 million and $41 million so this should be on par with those debuts.

He'll face a bit of competition from Rio, last week's champ. The film has had a strong week at the box office (making $3.6 million on Wednesday alone) so it should continue to do well this weekend since there isn't much new competition for its targeted family audience. Look for it to fly into the second position, but if Perry's movie stumbles, it could be a repeat win for the tropical bird flick. Hop should »

'Madea's Big Family' brings the big screen debut of Aunt Bam

21 April 2011 10:51 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Tyler Perry's sixth big screen turn as the feisty and truth-telling Madea in "Madea's Big Happy Family" has more than its share of funny moments featuring Perry's drag persona, but it also features the debut of another outspoken character, Aunt Bam.  Played by Cassi Davis, Madea's sister is just as blunt, but her opinions are, um, tainted by her unabashed love for weed.  That's right, the Madea franchise has it's first comic character that might end up being more popular than Perry's signature role. HitFix spoke to both Perry and Cassi Davis (as well as Lauren London) about the new comedy »

It's no question that Tyler Perry's Madea character is beloved by fans. So much so, that with the release of "Madea's Big Happy Family" this week, the outspoken, no-nonsense matriarch hits the big screen for the sixth time.

And as much as Perry loves the fan fervor for Madea, he's hinted multiple times over the years that he would love to kill the character off some way, somehow. But there's just one thing: The fans won't let him!

"The people, they won't let it go," Perry told MTV News at the premiere of "Madea's Big Happy Family" on Tuesday night. "They won't let it go. I got about a million messages on my message board of people »
