How to Turn Your Life Story Into a TV Sitcom

10 April 2015 4:00 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Should we feel bad for Eddie Huang? The restaurateur whose memoir about his childhood inspired the current ABC sitcom "Fresh Off the Boat" went on a multi-post Twitter rant after this week's episode, complaining that, since the pilot, the show has drifted far from the reality of his own experience, to the point where "it got so far from the truth that I don't recognize my own life."

That's certainly unfortunate, even for a guy who received a tidy sum for the TV rights to his autobiography. No one wants to see his or her experience distorted and broadcast to millions. Then again, what did he expect? It's a network sitcom. It's generally going to avoid any bleak reality that can't be resolved in 22 minutes.

This sort of biographical distortion has been an issue for sitcoms since the dawn of television, since the format simply doesn't lend itself easily to »

Veep’s Matt Walsh and Workaholics’ Maribeth Monroe join Keeping Up With the Joneses

8 April 2015 7:38 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Keeping Up With the Joneses’ already-hilarious cast has just gotten a whole lot funnier. Word has it Matt Walsh and Maribeth Monroe have just joined the upcoming 2016 Greg Mottola-helmed comedy.

Keeping Up With the Joneses follows a suburban couple who become suspicious of their new extremely attractive neighbors, who they later discover to be undercover agents. According to THR, Monroe and Walsh will play one of the couples already living in the neighborhood.

Walsh and Monroe join a comically charged cast including Zach Galifianakis, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher and Gal Gadot. Both actors, who already have strong comedy backgrounds, will be sure to bring a nice dynamic to the set as a neighboring couple. Monroe has worked on shows ranging from Key and Peele to Modern Family, Robot Chicken to Workaholics while Walsh has worked on films like The Hangover & Hits and shows like Upright Citizens Brigade, Reno 911! and most recently HBO’s Veep. »

Silicon Valley Season 2 Review

7 April 2015 9:00 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

This review was based off the first three episodes of season two, which were provided to us prior to broadcast.

Peter Gregory is dead. If there’s one major takeaway to be found in Sunday’s premiere, and the following two episodes of Silicon Valley’s second season, it’s that the eccentric tech billionaire and benefactor of Pied Piper is no more. That’s bad news for Richard, Erlich, and the rest of the guys at the Hacker Hostel, and not much better news for viewers at home: Silicon Valley suffered a major loss with the untimely passing of actor Christopher Evan Welch midway through the first season. His absence weighed heavily on the final batch of episodes from last spring, and how the show would choose to move forward in its sophomore year has been a big question.

Welch was only able to film an initial five of »

Behind the Mass Defection From CAA to UTA That Rocked Hollywood

7 April 2015 9:30 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It may not have registered on the Richter scale, but Hollywood is still reeling from the earthquake whose epicenter originated on Avenue of the Stars last week.

From the top down, CAA insiders were stunned by the mass defection of 11 agents, most of whom represent comedy talent, to smaller rival UTA. The move marked the biggest blow to CAA’s image as showbiz’s most powerful talent agency in 20 years, since the 1995 turmoil created by the departures of co-founders and rainmakers Michael Ovitz and Ron Meyer.

The decamping of the agents and such high-profile clients as Chris Pratt, Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell will take a significant financial toll on CAA down the road, but the more immediate and potentially lasting damage may be to its reputation as an elite place that talent and their reps rarely leave. The projection of the agency’s storied power is symbolically reinforced by »

Hollywood & Broadway: Studios Rush to the Stage Despite Clashing Business Models

7 April 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When Hollywood merges with Broadway, there are always fender-benders.

Just ask Harvey Weinstein.

As the movie aficionado and awards maven steered “Finding Neverland,” his first venture as a lead theater producer, toward the Great White Way, eyebrows raised in his wake.

He switched press agents. He swapped out the lead actors. He entirely scrapped an earlier version of the musical with a different creative team. When in spring 2014, he landed a much-coveted spot for the show on the Tony Awards telecast, naysayers tut-tutted that the play hadn’t even begun performances out of town, much less confirmed its Broadway run. Besides, Jennifer Hudson, the star of the Tonys segment, wouldn’t even be appearing in the actual stage production.

“I was criticized for Jennifer,” Weinstein recalls. “But this song (‘Neverland’) has been downloaded a million times, and all over the world people now know ‘Finding Neverland.’ In the movie business, »

Will Billy Crystal and Josh Gad's 'The Comedians' take down 'Modern Family' at the Emmys?'

"The Comedians" is a hilarious expose of the TV biz. Billy Crystal and Josh Gad are brilliant. Finally, a show that could take down "Modern Family" at the Emmys! -Break- This FX program premiering on April 9 before "Louie" is the funniest new show I have seen in recent years. And it has special appeal to TV academy members of all ages since it's about a veteran comedy legend and a rising young star battling over their own TV variety series. It reminds me of three-time Best Comedy Series champ "30 Rock" if crossed with "The Larry Sanders Show" and maybe "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (appropriate since Larry Charles has directed several episodes of that Larry David laffer and this new show). Those programs all made fun of television and the entertainment industry, just like other Emmy favorites like "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Murphy Brown,..."' »

Seinfeld May Soon Be Coming to Streaming (But Not on Netflix)

13 March 2015 3:03 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Larry David is soon going to have even less of a reason to complain: According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon, Hulu, and Yahoo are locked in a bidding war for the streaming rights to Seinfeld, a deal that's expected to eventually eclipse the $500,000 per episode Netflix got for Friends. The Netflix Friends deal called for four years of exclusive streaming, but the Journal reports that at least one of the streaming services is hoping for a ten-year commitment for Seinfeld. Speaking of Netflix, the streaming giant has bowed out of the race, likely after an executive there caught George staring at his daughter's cleavage. »
