Review: 'The Lorax' Is Cute But Weighed Down By Its Faithfulness To The Source Material

29 February 2012 10:10 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Adapting a children's book, especially one as beloved (and brief) as Dr. Seuss' gentle eco-fable "The Lorax," is an unenviable task. There's a sliver of narrative that must be expanded, padded, and teased out, while an attempt must be made to maintain all of the things that people love about Dr. Seuss (nee Theodor Geisel) and his books – the sing-songy rhythm, the loop-de-loop design work, the easy surrealism. In short: it's kind of a bitch. Or a snitch. Or a sliver-de-glitch. But the good folks at Illumination Entertainment (who made a surprise hit out of the decidedly under-the-radar "Despicable Me") have done a respectable job bringing "The Lorax" to the screen. It's just a shame that the fidelity to the source material, on both narrative and design levels, seems to have taken the steam out of something that could have been truly special.

The Lorax Crashes The Once-ler's Pad In New Clip

6 February 2012 11:21 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Coming soon to theaters everywhere is a familiar figure from our shared childhoods who has a metaphorical axe to grind concerning environmental preservation. Born from what is arguably the most directly political of Dr. Suess's children's books, Universal Pictures glossy adaptation The Lorax expands on the story we all remember well. Beyond being a tragic tale of the Once-ler who destroyed the once beautiful land of truffula trees and bar-ba-loots, screenwriters Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul, who co-wrote 2008's Horton Hears a Who!, have crafted a story of a young boy (Zac Efron) who lives in a world of artifice but aims to get back to nature.if only to impress the dreamy girl next door (Taylor Swift). Cinema Blend's Eric Eisenberg recently shared his impressions of The Lorax's first 20 minutes. Now hot on the heels of its chipper Super Bowl spot, Universal Pictures is offering a new clip »

Dr. Seuss Goes to the Super Bowl with New TV Spot for The Lorax

6 February 2012 5:45 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

While most of the movie spots — The Avengers, Battleship and John Carter, to name a few — that aired during yesterday's Super Bowl were geared toward male adults in the 18-35 age range, Universal Pictures bet on the fact that plenty of kids would be watching the game, too, and plunked down big bucks to air a new TV spot for Illumination Entertainment's (Despicable Me) latest animated feature, The Lorax.

Co-written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio (Despicable Me), and co-directed by Paul and Chris Renaud (Despicable Me), The Lorax brings Dr. Seuss' classic children's story about the dangers of corporate greed and environmental destruction to the big screen in dazzling "Tree-d." The story follows a young boy named Ted (voiced by Zac Efron) living in an artificial world who learns from his Grammy Norma (Betty White) of a time when real plants and animals were commonplace and sets out »

Al Pacino Replaces Javier Bardem As Despicable Me 2 Villain

3 February 2012 1:28 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Despicable Me 2 lost an Oscar winner when Javier Bardem passed on the opportunity to voice the lead villain in the animated sequel. Good thing there are so many Oscar winners just lying around waiting to be employed. Now Universal Pictures has announced that Al Pacino will replace Bardem in the feature directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin. Pacino will join previous Despicable stars Steve Carell and Russell Brand in a comedy that also stars Kristen Wiig and Miranda Cosgrove in supporting roles, according to a press release given to Coming Soon. Bardem, at the time, was supposed to voice El Macho, an evil genius who has sons -- in much the same way that Carell.s character, Gru, has daughters. But given the fact that Pacino.s an unlikely actor to assume a Spanish accent, I.m guessing writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio will enact a few »
