The Annie Award Nominees are Announced

Photo: DreamWorks Animation The International Animated Film Society announced the nominees for the 2008 Annie Awards and Kung Fu Panda is leading the way with 17 nominations followed by Disney's Bolt with 9 and the Disney/Pixar feature Wall-e earning 8. Panda picked up a healthy amount of noms in categories such as Character Animation, Character Design, Music, Production Design, Storyboarding, Voice Acting and Writing. In each of those categories it was either nominated while Bolt and Wall-e were not or secured multiple nominations giving it the outright nomination lead by 8. Could this be a sign of a Panda-over-wall-e Oscar upset? The nominees are listed below and you can check out the official award site here. Best Animated Feature Bolt (Walt Disney Animation Studios) Kung Fu Panda (DreamWorks Animation) $9.99 (Sherman Pictures/Lama Films) Wall-e (Pixar Animation Studios) Waltz With Bashir (Sony Pictures Classics/Bridgit Folman, Les Films D'ici, Razor Films) Best Animated Home Entertainment »

'Panda' earns 16 Annie Awards noms

1 December 2008 8:05 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda" fought off stiff competition to earn 16 nominations -- the most for a feature -- for the International Animated Film Society's 36th Annual Annie Awards.

That includes a nomination for best-animated feature, a category that includes Pixar Animation Studios "Wall-e"-considered the frontrunner for the Oscar-which earned seven nominations. "Panda" and "Wall-e" also earned one additional nomination each in the best video game competition.

The top category is rounded out by nominations for Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Bolt," a 3-D release that earned five nominations; Sony Pictures Classics' "Waltz With Bashir," Israel's award-winning documentary, which took four nominations; and Sherman Pictures/Lama Films "$9.99," a stop-motion title that earned two nominations.

Blue Sky Studios' "Dr. Suess' Horton Hear as Who," a Fox release, also had a strong showing with five nominations.

All of these features are short listed by AMPAS for this season's animated feature competition.

Dwa earned a total of 27 nominations. »

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

7 November 2008 2:00 PM, PST | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Release Date: Nov. 7

Director: Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath

Writer: Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath and Ethan Cohen

Starring: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith

Studio/Run Time:
DreamWorks Animation, 89 mins.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa borrows so much of its plot from The Lion King that it’s fortunate it steers away from the drama of Disney’s film and heads straight for the funnies. After a flashback, where baby Alex the lion is taken away from his family in Africa and rescued by the Central Park Zoo, the film picks up where Madagascar left of, with the four friends—Alex (Ben Stiller), zebra Marty (Chris Rock), giraffe Melman (David Schwimmer) and hippo Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith)—trying to leave the island. They take off in the carcass of a crashed plane piloted by the quartet of penguins, who again steal the show every time they’re on the screen. »

Review: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

7 November 2008 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I didn't think much of Madagascar, which had an unfocused story, no internal logic, and only a few laughs, scattered mostly among the minor characters. It relied too much on pop-culture references, too, a common problem these days in animation. So I'm glad to report that the sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, is an improvement. The story has a clear protagonist (instead of the lion and zebra battling for screen time), it's a bit more straightforward, and the movie references are all but gone. It's still primarily the supporting cast that's funny, not the leads -- but hey, if Dreamworks were capable of doing everything right it would have to change its name to Pixar.

The sequel, again directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, finds our heroes having repaired a dilapidated airplane and now preparing to fly themselves back to New York. But instead, they crash-land not far from »

Movie Review: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008)

Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

Photo: DreamWorks Animation I will always remain baffled at how 2005's Madagascar was loved by so many and ended up raking in over $193 million at the box-office. In my eyes the film was hardly worth the celluloid it was shown on. Taking that into consideration I walked into the screening of Madagascar Escape 2 Africa with trepidation and concern I was in for another 90 minutes of boredom. To my surprise my experience couldn't have been much better. While this sequel to a lame duck animated flick that wildly over exceeded its quality isn't the best animated film I have seen this year, it is far from the worst and holds a lot of laughs. The primary problem with the first Madagascar was that the story essentially went nowhere. The four »

Moviegoers headed to 'Madagascar'

6 November 2008 10:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Hollywood should jump back into the win column this weekend with three nicely diverse wide openers including a broadly appealing animated sequel homing in on a possible $50 million domestic bow.

A built-in fan base and strong early reviews could help DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" outpace the 2005 franchise original's opening Friday-Sunday haul of $47.2 million. "Madagascar" bowed during a Memorial Day frame and thus posted a four-day opening of $61 million, en route to grossing $193.6 million overall domestically.

The Paramount-distributed sequel certainly should ring up at least $45 million-$50 million, but a big weekend of moviegoing could push the PG-rated comedy even a bit higher.

"I think the movie has a real shot at opening over $50 million," Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said. "The only real wild card is the weather. If it rains, that's great news for any film that plays to a family audience. But if it snows, it kills you. »

Directors talk 'Madagascar' sequel

26 October 2008 4:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Co-directors Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath discussed the travel plans of Alex the lion and his friends during the Los Angeles premiere of Dreamworks Animation's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," the sequel to the studios' 2005 animated hit.

"After five years in the making of the first movie, we fell in love with these characters," Darnell said Sunday at the Mann Village Theatre in Westwood. "It was clear that there were stories we could tell that could be as funny as the first movie, but maybe take them to a richer place, maybe more emotionally charged situations. That's what we've done with this film. It's a richer experience, I hope."

With at least one more sequel anticipated, McGrath said: "We'd like to see the characters get back to New York -- that's where they started. But there are great opportunities for stops around the world."

With a smile, he added, "We took »
