Directed by Shame's Steve McQueen and based on Northup's memoir, the film centres on a free black man from New York who is abducted and sold into slavery in the antebellum United States.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong'o, Sarah Paulson and Brad Pitt star in the film, which is screening in Us cinemas now and will open in the UK on January 10.

Why Paul Dano Will Never Be a (Run-of-the-Mill) Movie Star

26 December 2013 4:58 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Many young, successful actors dance into the bright lights of fame as if were the path to the after life, but Paul Dano keeps slinking around them. On a weekday afternoon last month, the lanky 29-year-old sauntered into the folksy diner Rucola in Brooklyn’s Boeurum Hill neighborhood and looked relieved to find the place nearly empty. He sunk comfortably into anonymity and ordered a coffee. "This is easier," he said with a sigh. "The whole being-in-a-room interview thing, at a junket or a film festival, is very inhuman. You meet the person, have five or 10 minutes to talk, and it's not like a conversation." His bulging eyes and towering figure belie a soft-spoken quality that gives the impression of discomfort with overexposure. "When you repeat yourself so many times, even if you're speaking the truth, the repetition starts to feel false," he said. "Sometimes, you just feel like the words you're speaking, »

Prisoners - Blu-ray Review

21 December 2013 7:31 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Although the film loses some momentum towards the ending, Prisoners is a gripping thriller that shows how far a normal man will go when pushed to the extreme. The movie is hard to watch, but the performances of its incredible ensemble cast make the journey impossible to turn off. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband), Prisoners features Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, and Paul Dano. Set at Thanksgiving, the film opens with Keller Dover (Jackman), his wife Grace (Bello), their teenage son (Dylan Minnette) and small daughter (Erin Gerasimovich) going to a neighbor’s house for Thanksgiving. Keller owns a carpentry business and the lunch is with his long-time »

Prisoners Blu-Ray Review

18 December 2013 9:24 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

“Somebody needs to make him talk, or they’re gonna die,” growls Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman), the terrified father of an abducted girl and the searing centerpoint of Dennis Villeneuve’s excellent film Prisoners, to a horrified family friend (Terrence Howard) whose daughter has also been taken. The ‘him’ in question: sinister man-child Alex Jones, played to perfection by Paul Dano, whom Keller has taken hostage in his conviction that Alex can lead him to the missing girls.

The twisted morality play at the center of Prisoners revolves around Keller’s divisive, ends-justify-the-means approach to justice; are his brutal tactics warranted if the girls turn up unharmed? Or is there a limit to how much evil can be done in pursuit of a greater good? Luckily, Villeneuve doesn’t indicate a clear moral high ground, instead choosing to revel in the murky behaviors of his characters. The result is one »

Blu-ray Review: Riveting ‘Prisoners’ Connects Even on Repeat Viewing

17 December 2013 1:32 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Denis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners” seems to have been lost in the awards season conversation and that’s a shame. Not only is Richard Deakins’ cinematography some of the best in his career but Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman’s emotional work here deserves more credit than it’s been getting. Newly released on a gorgeous Blu-ray (with, sadly, scant special features), “Prisoners” is the kind of adult drama that seems certain to pick up more fans on the home market. It’s really worth your time.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

What would you do if your loved ones were in jeopardy? Is there anything that would stop you from torturing the person you thought responsible for your daughter’s kidnapping? And could you sleep at night if you the detective in charge of saving young lives? “Prisoners” is not just an intense drama, it is an expertly crafed one from Deakins’ beautiful camera work to great editing, »

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week

"Ain't Them Bodies Saints"

What's It About? This little Texan indie is part romance and part dramatic thriller. Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, and Ben Foster headline this top-notch cast about a man on the run, the woman he loves, and the sheriff who tries to get between them. (Not in a romantic way, just, you know, because he's a man of the law and Affleck's character broke out of jail.)

Why We're In: It's a slow and sweet Sundance favorite, and the Texas weather looks a whole lot hotter than the snow most of us are dealing with every day.

New on DVD/Blu-ray: Prisoners (2013)

15 December 2013 7:27 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

For a film that had so much trouble landing its leading men in the wind-up to production, it’s incredible how well director Dennis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners” turned out. An unpredictable, white knuckle thriller that rarely lets up, I guess the fact so many good actors took a swing at the film’s two major roles before Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal finally landed the gigs is evidence of the movie’s strong script. All of that comes through in the movie, now hitting DVD/Blu-ray this December 17, 2013. How far would you go to protect your family? Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is facing every parent’s worst nightmare. His six-year-old daughter, Anna, is missing, together with her young friend, Joy, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The only lead is a dilapidated Rv that had earlier been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) arrests its driver, »

No 7 – For Ellen

So Yong Kim's story about a vulnerable rocker and his daughter is music to Andrew Pulver's ears, as we continue our list of this year's top 10 films

• The 10 best films of 2013: Have your say

For Ellen arrived somewhat unheralded in cinemas, a product of the 2012 Sundance film festival; unheralded, perhaps, because of its opaque title and director So Yong Kim's track record of wispy meditations on Korean-American identity. But what a pleasure it turned out to be. It's never easy to create a plausible musician on screen – Spinal Tap has seen to that – and particularly a nail-varnish-wearing, soul patch-sporting rocker of the type that Paul Dano impersonates here.

But instead of attempting to distil a hard-partying, cooler-than-thou muso, Dano's Joby Taylor is an intensely vulnerable, childlike figure, as ineffectual as a 10-year-old. We first see him as he drives chaotically through the snow into a small American town (naturally, »
