Filed under: Celebrity Interviews, Features, Movie News

You may not know Olivia Thirlby by name, but odds are you recognize the 25-year-old actress, who's starred in everything from 'Juno' to 'No Strings Attached' to 'United 93.' Judging from her upcoming slate of films, name recognition could soon follow as well. In addition to appearing alongside Paul Dano and Robert De Niro in next year's 'Being Flynn,' Thirlby is set to play Judge Anderson in the buzzed-about sci-flick, 'Dredd.' The film, based on the comic book series, was originally adapted into the famously awful 1995 movie 'Judge Dredd' with Sylvester Stallone (not that it matters -- Thirlby hasn't even watched that one); fans of the comic have been clamoring for another version ever since. Moviefone recently spoke with Thirlby about stepping into the role of Anderson, whether she was a sci-fi geek growing up and what it's like fighting aliens, »

New film projects by the likes of Aktan Arym Kubat (The Light Thief), Athina Rachel Tsangari (Attenberg), Taika Waititi (Eagle vs Shark), Kelly Reichardt (Meek's Cutoff), Úrszula Antoniak (Code Blue and Nothing Personal), Quentin Dupieux (Rubber and the Sundance selected Wrong), Florin Serban (If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle), Ruben Östlund (pictured above) and Aditya Assarat (Wonderful Town) are among the 36 projects participating in Rotterdam’s 29th co-production market CineMart (where a whopping 850 potential co-financiers add coin to future projects). Among the filmmakers we are keeping a closer eye on, we see that Athina Rachel Tsangari's breakout Venice-winning Attenberg helped her secure producing help for her next feature, "Duncharon," - Haos Films will be joined by Faliro House Productions, Maharaja Films and one of our favorite outfitters in The Match Factory. Another female auteur in The Netherlands' Úrszula Antoniak is working on Nude Area with Topkapi Films and Pandora Film producing. »

Daily Briefing. Film Comment Poll: Best of 2011

17 December 2011 8:17 AM, PST | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life tops Film Comment's list of the "Best Released Films of 2011," an annual year-end survey of film critics, editors, and past and present contributors — over 120 of them this year — so the magazine has put Kent Jones's beautiful essay from the July/August issue online (even if you don't admire the film as much as he does, you'll know that this is a must-read), and the Film Society of Lincoln Center is screening The Tree of Life through Tuesday.

The "Released" list goes as far as 50; the "Best Unreleased Movies of 2011" list runs to 52. At #1 is Jafar Panahi's This Is Not a Film; #2: Béla Tarr's The Turin Horse. There's been some grumbling among the tweeting set, by the way, that this list is too crowded with films that have scored distribution deals and will indeed be seeing a theatrical run sooner or later. »

Top 10 Hollywood Actors Still In Business

16 December 2011 7:05 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Much of our lurid film community is of the belief that America’s acting prowess died with its classic stars like Marlon Brando, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Grace Kelly. However, I’m here to argue that America’s actors are stronger than ever and can match up toe to toe with the likes of both Europe and Asia.

The list will be split into two parts: in part one, I delve into the modern world of Hollywood actors with actresses soon to follow in part two.

Part one: Top Ten Actors Working In Hollywood Today

Actor With The Most Potential To Hit It Big: Paddy Considine

Before I begin the list, I want to take a moment to discuss an actor whom I believe has enormous potential. While not American born, British actor Paddy Considine has been in his fair share of American films like In America, »

16 December 2011 3:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Even as I'm rushing to catch up on the 2011 films I've missed before the end of the year, I'm already looking forward to the crop of films that are due to open next year. Focus Features has just announced release dates for three of its upcoming releases I'm most curious about: Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, Paul Weitz's Being Flynn, and Lorene Scafaria's Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. Details after the jump. Variety [2] reports that Being Flynn will get a limited release March 2, the same day that The Lorax, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Project X are set to open wide. Based on Nick Flynn's acclaimed memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, Being Flynn features Paul Dano as a young writer who reconnects with his absentee dad (Robert De Niro) when the latter shows up at the homeless shelter where the former works. »
