New 'Love & Mercy' Poster is Set for '60s

24 April 2015 1:40 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I prefer movie posters that are not just pictures of the actors. A poster never makes me want to see a movie, but a well designed poster may make me want to purchase a print of it. I like a bit of artistic ambition in them. The new poster for the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy decides to embrace the 1960s to make a poster that certainly pops. I probably won't buy a print, but at least somebody put some effort into the poster, which you can check out below. The poster does make it seem like the whole movie takes place in the '60s, which it doesn't. Paul Dano and John Cusack split the duties of playing the Beach Boys legend in two different areas of his life. I saw the film at SXSW this year, and greatly enjoyed it. So, more importantly than admiring the poster, go »

Love & Mercy trailer: Paul Dano brings the Beach Boys to big screen

17 April 2015 1:24 PM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Paul Dano and John Cusack bring the complicated life of Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson to the big screen in an international trailer for Love & Mercy.

The duo portray the singer-songwriter at two pivotal points in his life, as he struggled under the pressure of success and later fell under the care of controversial therapist Dr Eugene Landy.

Dano's section of the film explores the personal difficulty that Wilson felt while writing and recording the landmark album Pet Sounds in the mid-1960s.

By the 1980s, Wilson was facing scrutiny for the amount of control that his adviser Dr Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatt) had taken in his life.

The musician's life story is being brought to the big screen by The Tree of Life's Bill Pohlad, a producer-turned-director.

Love & Mercy opens on June 5 in the Us. A UK release is yet to be set. »

Cannes Unveils 2015 Official Selection Lineup

16 April 2015 3:12 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Star-studded English-language dramas from Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant, Denis Villeneuve, Justin Kurzel, Paolo Sorrentino and Matteo Garrone will vie for the Palme d’Or alongside new films by Valerie Donzelli, Jacques Audiard, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Jia Zhangke at the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival, which unveiled its official selection lineup on Thursday.

While there are only two U.S. directors in competition — Haynes with “Carol,” a 1950s lesbian love story starring Cate Blanchett, and Van Sant with his suicide drama “The Sea of Trees,” pairing Matthew McConaughey and Ken Watanabe — this year’s Palme race looks to feature more high-profile Hollywood talent than any in recent memory. Canada’s Villeneuve (“Prisoners,” “Enemy”) will bring his Mexican drug-cartel drama “Sicario,” with Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, while Australia’s Kurzel (“The Snowtown Murders”) secured a Palme berth for “Macbeth,” his Shakespeare adaptation toplining Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. »

Pet Sounds In "Love & Mercy"

Sneak Peek footage from director Bill Pohlad's upcoming "Beach Boys" biopic "Love & Mercy" focusing on the band's founding member Brian Wilson, played by Paul Dano as the younger Wilson and John Cusack as the older, opening June 5, 2015:

"...few musical acts are as widely beloved as the 'Beach Boys'. Under the visionary leadership of singer-songwriter Brian Wilson, the California surf combo redefined the sound of American popular music in the 1960s.

"But their joyful harmonies and ingenious arrangements concealed Wilson’s private struggle with addiction and mental illness, and by the early seventies he had descended into drug-fuelled isolation.

"'Love & Mercy' is an intimate rendering of Wilson’s mercurial genius, illustrating both his musical mastery and the psychological pain it disguised..."

John Cusack and Paul Dano Are Brian Wilson in Must-See, Lovely 'Love & Mercy' (Trailer)

15 April 2015 11:57 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Director Bill Pohlad and writers Michael A. Lerner and Oren Moverman twist the biopic genre by paralleling Wilson's disorderly heyday with his eventual nervous breakdown and subsequent Stockholm syndrome-like relationship with the dubious Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). Paul Dano plays the spacey, slowly frittering '60s Wilson — as he was just starting to go solo and dip his toes in the world of orchestral pop — while Cusack plays 1980s Wilson, who was suffering creatively and wrestling with paranoid schizophrenia. Dano and Cusack's beautiful performances draw you into Wilson's inner world with the support of Elizabeth Banks as Melinda Ledbetter, the sparky Cadillac saleswoman who steps into his life to save it (and went on to become his current wife). New trailer for Love and Mercy starring John Cusack and Paul Dano as The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson

15 April 2015 1:59 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

A new trailer for Love and Mercy – which tells the story of The Beach BoysBrian Wilson – has arrived online, and we have it for you below…

Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) and John Cusack (High Fidelity) both star as Wilson, playing him as a young and old man respectively. The film follows Wilson from the group’s rise in sunny SoCal through the darkness of his burgeoning mental illness. As their popularity soared — making magic in the studio, conquering charts and minds, battling the Beatles (and sometimes winning) — Wilson’s inner demons festered.

The film focuses mainly on Wilson in the 1980’s, when he suffered midlife crisis that could have killed him, to the midlife romance that pretty much saved him. Paul Giamatti (Sideways) co-stars as Eugene Landy, the dodgy shrink who went from helping Wilson to over-medicating him, alongside Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) as Melinda Ledbetter, »

Judging by the new trailer for Love And Mercy, this film is definitely a member of the latter category. Watch for yourself in the video below. The new trailer for Love And Mercy dropped on YouTube, and it's definitely a step up from the earlier, sparser footage that was released two months ago. "You hear the new Beatles? We can't let them get ahead of us!" Back in February, we got our first glimpse at Love & Mercy, the biopic of Beach Boys' singer and songwriter Brian Wilson. The film that played Tiff last year features Paul Dano (Prisoners) and John Cusack playing the music icon at two different points of his life in the 60s and 70s. Now the full trailer for the film has arrived, showcasing both the rise in fame and popularity of Wilson and his surf rock to the struggles he faced due to drug addiction and mental illness. It seems like quite the unique approach to the standard rock biopic, and it looks pretty good. Watch! Love & Mercy Trailer: This Beach Boys Biopic Might Make You Cry

14 April 2015 3:10 PM, PDT | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

The Beach Boys have one of the most iconic sounds in American music, and a new movie is about to shed some light on how those sounds were created. Paul Dano and John Cusack play the band's founder, Brian Wilson, at very different stages in his life in Love & Mercy. (The title refers to Wilson's 1988 solo song.) Dano portrays young Wilson, full of life and hoping to create "the greatest album ever made." Flash-forward to the '80s and Cusack looks worn out and affected by mental-health issues that are made worse by substance abuse. The trailer actually makes the film seem less about the music and more about the love story between Wilson and his wife, Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks). Scenes with the two of them coupled with The Beach Boys' 1966 hit "God Only Knows" might make you emotional, especially with Paul Giamatti starring as Wilson's controlling therapist. »

One of the more pleasant surprises out of the South by Southwest Film Festival this year was Bill Pohland's Love & Mercy (read my review here). What could have been just another by-the-numbers musician biopic, here concerning the life of Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson, actually turned into a compelling examination of two specific points of a man's life, featuring two terrific performances by John Cusack and especially Paul Dano as the man in those two points. readmore postid="171036" If you want to see a little more footage from the film, have I got good news for you. New Love & Mercy Trailer: John Cusack and Paul Dano Are Beach Boy Brian Wilson

14 April 2015 1:03 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have released a new Love & Mercy trailer for director Bill Pohlad’s excellent drama about founding Beach Boys member Brian Wilson. The movie takes a unique approach to the standard biopic by focusing on two very specific periods of Wilson’s life: Paul Dano plays the younger Wilson as he creates the band’s magnum opus Pet Sounds while showing early signs of mental illness, while John Cusack plays Wilson in the early 1990s, when he was reclusive, plagued by his disorder, and being controlled by his manager. I caught the film at Tiff last fall and it’s really great. Dano and Cusack are both incredible as Wilson, as is Elizabeth Banks as a woman who helps bring the elder Wilson out of hiding. Pohlad also stages the creation of the Pet Sounds album exquisitely, refraining from portraying anything as “Eureka!” moments or relying on montages to tell the story. »

Watch: New Trailer For Brian Wilson Biopic 'Love & Mercy' With Paul Dano & John Cusack Has Good Vibrations

There's the Brian Wilson known as the pop music genius who cemented his legendary status with the Beach Boys'  Pet Sounds. And then there's the less well-known Wilson, lost in the '80s and caught in the ruthless grip of his therapist Dr. Eugene Landy. Both are represented in the biopic "Love & Mercy," and a new trailer is here. Paul Dano and John Cusack respectively play the younger and older Wilsons in a film spanning his artistic highs, creative ambitions, burnout and lost year. Directed by Bill Pohlad and penned by Oren Moverman ("Rampart," "The Messenger"), the movie is one we described as having "plenty of love and mercy for its subject, but also some edginess, in what is a fascinating look at one of popular music's most important and influential songwriters." "Love & Mercy" opens on June 5th. Watch below. »
