28 December 2009 7:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

In a period where the studio-based portion independent film industry are on suicide watch, it'll be fun to relive a time when Harvey Weinstein and everyone competing against him could do no wrong. Ever since we got word that there was a screenplay based on Peter Biskind's incendiary book was making the rounds (Jeffrey Wells) and there was activity on the production that a crew were in Cannes filming, but now we got word that Down and Dirty Pictures (a 10 million dollar production) has got a great cast in place (Hugh Dancy, Matthew Perry, Andy Serkis, Sally Hawkins, Elias Koteas, Bobby Cannavale, Toby Jones and Michael Rispoli) with Scren Daily reporting that Vincent D'Onofrio is poised to take on the "role" of Weinstein. - (Thanks to a reader below for pointing out that apparently some of the info below might turn out to be false - Screen Daily have pulled their article, »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

He Said

Here are some of the memorable quotes from male actors Back Stage spoke to in the past year:"I've been talking to [Nelson Mandela] for years. He was asked if 'Long Walk to Freedom' became a movie, who would he want to play him, and he named me. It's been a forgone conclusion that at some point or other, I would play him."—Morgan Freeman, "Invictus""I struggled with the auditioning process at the beginning, for sure. It's always kind of weird when you're doing a scene for those who are hiring. You have to audition, and a lot of times it's a sterile room and you're standing on an X mark and it's somewhat unnatural. Then, after a while, I started seeing it more as a rehearsal rather than an actual audition. That helped, and I started feeling more comfortable with it."—Michael Fassbender, "Inglourious Basterds""I didn't really have the »

Rising star Noel Clarke, Claire Danes in London, and hard liquor at the Bifa awards | Trailer trash

5 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The jury's out

Trash had the pleasure of being on the Bafta jury to decide this year's Orange Rising Star Award nominees. It was an impressively intense process, whittling down 117 candidates until 18 remained. These were then vigorously debated: is being in Twilight a good or bad thing? Do we count debuts or only those with growing bodies of work? Will the voting public recognise a foreign actor if we put one forward? Anyway, our votes are now in for the final five nominees who'll be announced on 12 January, sparking a public vote via www.orange.co.uk/bafta. Current holder Noel Clarke is on the jury this year and is in no doubt how much of a boost the Orsa gave him last year. "In terms of recognition and respect within the industry, it's amazing how much it does for you," he told me. "A whole new public saw me winning, »

My parents have been happily married since they were 21, so I have been lucky to have them as a model." The Satellites Have Launched. What Are They Orbiting?

30 November 2009 6:10 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".

It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not. »

2009 Satellite Awards – Nominations

Why should anyone give a damn about the (Golden) Satellite Awards? Well, how often will you see a small, little-seen indie like The Stoning of Soraya M. (above) listed as one of the best films of the year? Or Hugh Dancy shortlisted for his performance in Adam? Or Mozhan Marno listed as best supporting actress, also for The Stoning of Soraya M.? Or the absence of two of the "top ten films of the year" from the list of the year’s twelve best films (six dramas, six comedies or musicals)? The two absent (best) films, by the way, are (500) Days of Summer and Inglourious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino was also ignored when it came to the shortlisting the year’s best directors. The Gene Pool Gets An Upgrade: Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy Wed

30 September 2009 12:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The 2007 movie Evening received bad reviews and was seen by about eight people, but it appears that one good thing came from the production. AP reports that beautiful actress Claire Danes has married her co-star from that film, equally beautiful actor Hugh Dancy. Combined, the pair are so pretty that if you look directly at them, you'll permanently scar your corneas.

For those of you who enjoy a whiff of scandal with your celebrity news, the Claire/Dancy (should we call them "Clancy?") romance began amid rumors that Danes entered the liaison while still involved with boyfriend Billy Crudup. This was only interesting because when Danes and Crudup began dating, there were rumors that she'd broken up Crudup's relationship with a then-pregnant Mary-Louise Parker. Whether any of this is true is anyone's guess, but when exceptionally lovely people break up and then start sleeping with other lovely people, the tabloids start sharpening their sticks. »
