Berlin: 2016 Sees Strong But Select Biz at the European Film Market

15 February 2016 7:00 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

This year’s European Film Market may well go down as the strongest in years. “There was a great selection of titles, of everything you want: Big, small, sophisticated, arthouse, director-driven titles,” said Ivan Boeing at Imagem.

The most high-profile deal happened when Paramount closed domestic for around $10 million on the George Clooney-directed “Suburbicon.” The new leadershsip at Focus Features nabbed North America and most of international on Jeff Nichols’ “Loving” for $9 million. CAA handled both the “Suburbicon” and “Loving” domestic deals.

U.S. theatrical deals are once again important in the international sales mix, after years where they relegated to the background. “What really struck me at Berlin this year was the significant number of titles on which sellers guaranteed their film would get U.S. theatrical release, sometimes a conventional release or a studio pick-up,” said Boeing.

Some even guaranteed a movie’s screen count. “If you don’t have a U. »

The Fast And The Furious Director Rob Cohen To Helm Hurricane Heist Movie Category 5

20 January 2016 12:56 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Long before Fast and Furious developed into a lucrative juggernaut, director Rob Cohen blended genres to create the original cult hit in 2001, The Fast and the Furious. Taking the undercover cop template made successful by Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break and infusing it with a street-racing drama, Cohen’s genre hybrid proved to overly successful – more so financially than critically – and the filmmaker will hope to pull off a similar feat with Category 5.

Charting the daring journey of one tight-knight group of tech wizards aiming to infiltrate a military compound hiding in plain sight amid a small coastal town, the movie plays to the beats of your average heist film. With their eyes firmly trained on a bounty north of $100 million, the hackers begin about enacting their seemingly foolproof plan, though disaster strikes when a category 5 hurricane comes barrelling off the sea.

Rob Cohen to Direct a Disaster Action Thriller 'Category 5'

20 January 2016 11:20 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The past decade hasn't been too kind to director Rob Cohen. The director, who is perhaps best known for directing Vin Diesel in the "Fast and the Furious" and "xXx" in the early 2000s hasn't done much for me to be excited about in recent years. In 2005, he directed "Stealth," the forgettable plane movie starring Jamie Foxx. In 2008, he directed the third "Mummy" flick, which effectively ended the franchise. In 2012, he directed the terrible "Alex Cross" movie, and most recently, he helmed the Jennifer Lopez vehicle "Boy Next Door," which wasn't any better received by viewers or critics.

It's now been revealed that Cohen will be going back to the crazy silly action genre with "Category 5," a film that "follows a team of tech hackers who infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility on a small coastal town to steal $102M in cash, just as a disastrous Category 5 hurricane, the storm of the century, »
