AFI Fest 2012 Review: Shapeless ‘Hitchcock’ Nearly Saved by Stellar Supporting Performances

6 November 2012 3:00 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Alfred Hitchcock is, as the kids say, “having a moment” right now. On the heels of a HBO’s made-for-television film, The Girl, and a year before he’ll pop up in Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco, ol’ Hitch is the subject of yet another feature. This one is simply named Hitchcock, and despite the promise such an eponymous title might deliver (“Hitchcock! That sounds like it will cover quite a bit of ground!”), Sacha Gervasi‘s film sticks to a slim (though important) period of the director’s life, focusing on the production of Psycho, a truly warts-and-all experience. And yet, despite working from intriguing material (the script, by John J. McLaughlin, has been adapted from Stephen Rebello‘s book, “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho”) and with a tremendously talented cast (led by Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren), the final product is a disparate and shapeless film that never finds its footing or »

The 2000′s: A Vital Decade in Horror Cinema

3 November 2012 10:48 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.

Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.

While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms »

'Wolverine' Plot Details and Bone Claws, Gosling Out of 'Logan's Run' and Cooper for Crow's Next

1.) I didn't really mind X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Everyone else seemed to hate it. That's fine. Now a sequel to the film everyone hated is on the way and with the new picture of Hugh Jackman sporting some bone claws as the title character in the pages of Empire magazine, director James Mangold reveals that while the first film may have been considered a prequel to all the other X-Men features, The Wolverine is not. Mangold told the mag, "Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey Famke Janssen is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there's a tremendous sense of isolation for him... I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily »

Derek Jacobi Joins Nicole Kidmans Grace Kelly Biopic

24 October 2012 10:11 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco has been blessed with buzz since it was a spec script bouncing around the desks of Hollywood players. In 2011 it made the prestigious Black List, and shortly thereafter secured Olivier Dahan, the heralded director of the Oscar-winning Edith Piaf biopic La vie en rose, to helm. Soon Nicole Kidman signed on to play the movie star turned princess, and was later joined by Tim Roth and Parker Posey, slated to play her prince and frenemy respectively. With cameras now rolling on this promising picture, Variety reports Derek Jacobi, one of England's most respected thespians, has been added to the incredible ensemble cast. Jacobi, who has appeared in such Academy Award-courting efforts as My Week With Marilyn, The King's Speech, and Gladiator, will portray Count Fernando D'Aillieres. Described as a "flamboyant aristocrat," D'Aillieres was an ally to Kelly as she attempted to learn the »

Nicole Kidman Passes On Lars Von Trier's Graphic Nymphomaniac

17 October 2012 8:16 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Lars von Trier.s allegedly specific Nymphomaniac has been busy in its pre-production casting process, though the film just lost its first high-profile ensemble member . and it.s someone who actually worked with Von Trier in the past. Buried near the bottom of a report in The Hollywood Reporter on the various actors joining Von Trier.s latest is the news nugget that Kidman .will not be a part of this movie,. perhaps because she.s too tied up playing Grace Kelly in Olivier Dahan.s Grace of Monaco. Truthfully, I was waiting for marquee-type talents like Kidman to bail on Von Trier because, according to all reports, he wants explicit sex captured on screen for a potential hardcore cut of Nymphomaniac. Then again, Kidman was willing to urinate on Zac Efron for Lee Daniel.s The Paperboy, so maybe it really is a scheduling conflict and not a case »

Set Pics Reveal First Look At Nicole Kidman As Grace Kelly In 'Grace Of Monaco'

9 October 2012 11:04 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

So, it would appear from these set pics that Nicole Kidman playing Grace Kelly looks a lot like Nicole Kidman. But if you're going to get someone to play the legendary actress and royal figure, Kidman is pretty damn good ace to have in the pocket. Directed by Olivier Dahan of "La Vie En Rose" fame, the upcoming "Grace Of Monaco," is set in 1962, when the city-state of Monaco got into a heated dispute with France, which had grown tired of the small principality being a tax haven. Charles De Gaulle gave Kelly's husband Prince Rainer III (Tim Roth) six months to change his tax laws, and she maneuvered behind the scenes to save Monaco from a coup. It's going to be the tax evasion/cinema history movie you've been waiting for! And while we're curious to see how this odd historical chapter turns (or doesn't) into a compelling film, »

The Paperboy Clip #4 – Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman Flirting

29 September 2012 12:35 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Nicole Kidman has had some major ups and down the past few years. However, there are some interesting films on the horizon for the hot-turned-plastic Aussie star, from Park Chan-Wook‘s creepy thriller Stoker, to the Olivier Dahan-directed Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco.

But, before any of these features make their way to theaters, Kidman will trudge across the big screen playing shameless white trash in Lee Daniel‘s already controversial sultry Southern thriller, The Paperboy.

Will it be a hit or miss for Kidman? Take a look at the latest clip, which features her languid femme fatale flirting in the car with Zac Efron as titular paperboy:

Inspired by Peter Dexter’s crime novel, The Paperboy centers on the quest of two brothers – one an investigative journalist and the other a naïve paperboy – to seek the truth in a strange murder case, urged on by the accused’s wannabe bride. »

Nicole Kidman Flirts With Zac Efron In New Clip From The Paperboy

Nicole Kidman has had some major ups and down the past few years. Following her Academy Award-nominated performance in John Cameron Mitchell's heartbreaking indie drama Rabbit Hole, she appeared in the critically reviled Adam Sandler comedy Just Go With It then the senseless Joel Schumacher thriller Trespass, which was not only loathed by critics but made a paltry $24,000 in its domestic release. Let me say that again: Trespass made only $24,000 in Us theaters. However, there's some deeply intriguing films on the horizon for the Aussie star, from Park Chan-wook's creepy thriller Stoker, to the recently wrapped war drama Railway Man, and the Olivier Dahan-directed Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco.
