New Release: My Own Love Song Blu-ray and DVD

11 April 2011 1:59 PM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

My Own Love Song, the 2010 road movie comedy-drama starring Renee Zellweger (Case 39) and Forest Whitaker (Repo Men) comes to Blu-ray and DVD on May 3 from Inception Media.

Renee Zellweger and Forest Whitaker carry the tune in My Own Love Song.

Written and directed by French artist and filmmaker Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose), My Own Love Song tells the story of wheelchair-bound singer Jane (Zellweger) and her mentally unstable best friend Joey as they set out on a cross-country in search of redemption, self-discovery and courage—you know, all those things one sets out to “find” when taking to the highway on an extended road trip.

The movie also stars Nick Nolte (TV’s Rich Man, Poor Man) and Madeline Zima (TV’s Heroes).

Despite its impressive credentials—including star turns by two Oscar winners and a bunch of new and vintatge songs by none other than Bob Dylan »

David Thomson on Marion Cotillard

7 April 2011 4:06 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

When Marion Cotillard played Edith Piaf in Olivier Dahan's La Vie en Rose (2007), she amazed most of us with the intensity of her impersonation and physical commitment to Piaf's desperate fragility. She didn't actually sing the songs, but who noticed? The response to Cotillard was automatic and heartfelt: she won a Bafta, a César, a Golden Globe and the Oscar – the first time that prize had gone to a player in a French film. Somehow, she became confused with Piaf. It was taken for granted that Cotillard was herself a powerhouse and an international star in the making. But it has all turned out very differently, to such an extent that one marvels all the more at the ferocious resources she laid hold of for Piaf.

For what has been revealed in her films since 2007 is a proclivity for pain, suffering, patience and a curiously passive intensity. It's not that I'm unappreciative. »

Watch Forest Whitaker in My Own Love Song – trailer

23 March 2011 3:05 PM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

You’ve just got to admire Forest Whitaker. He doesn’t have what we would call “movie star” looks, but the guy works A Lot! Movies, TV, shadow puppets, whatever . If there’s a camera he’s in front of it.

So with that in mind here’s the trailer for his latest film My Own Love Song in which he co-stars with Renee Zellweger and Nick Nolte. However the film, which was directed by French filmmaker Olivier Dahan who directed 2007  film La Vie en Rose about Edith Piaf ,didn’t find an U.S. distributor and is coming out instead on DVD on May 3rd. Yeah I know it looks kind of sappy and that Whitaker is playing yet another “Magic Negro” part, albeit one who’s kind of loony, but like I said he’s working.

Best known for directing Marion Cotillard to worldwide fame and an Oscar win in "La Vie En Rose," director Olivier Dahan has lined up his project and unlike his latest effort--the largely forgotten country music drama "My Own Love Song" which is heading straight-to-dvd--he's getting out of the music world and stepping into sports instead. Tout Le Cine reports that an ensemble cast including José Garcia, Gad Elmaleh (who will be seen in Woody Allen's "Midnight In Paris"), Ramzy Bedia, Franck Dubosc, Omar Sy, Joey Starr and Jean-Pierre Marielle have been assembled for the soccer comedy "Les Seigneurs." The film… »
