The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

Class of 2010?: Love Ranch, The Concert, Biutiful, The Tempest and The Illusionist

13 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- With the final Gala and Special Presentation announcements for Tiff out of the way, and unless Telluride, BFI London and Rome reveal some major world premiere coups, we can expect to see new works from Alejandro González Iñárritu, Taylor Hackford, Géla Babluani, Radu Mihaileanu, Mark Ruffalo, Olivier Dahan, Julie Taymor, Sylvain Chomet only in 2010. Curiously, among the titles listed below, three of them happen to star Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren. Here are 9 must see titles of 2009 that we should end up seeing in 2010.  * Biutiful It's being sold by Focus Features Intl. who will logically distribute the film domestically and while Focus have nothing on slate for December, Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest which stopped shooting sometime this summer, could logically be bumped until a Cannes premiere next summer. Prediction: Fall 2010 release. * The Concert This will receive a November 4th release in France and while The Weinstein Company own this »

Cotillard is One Sexy ‘Lady’, Dior is One Sexy Bag

29 June 2009 12:13 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

I will not deny it. I love Marion Cotillard. Being a woman I won't deny my natural impulses to fall for pretty things in general, which makes me dig the new stylish Dior web series Lady Dior. Filmmaker Olivier Dahan helms the project making Cotillard as stylish as ever. But, it's no secret the real star of the series is Dior's new handbag, the Lady Dior. "Eryn Brown" While Dahan can create pretty visuals in the noir tradition, and Cotillard can look fabulous in Dior clothing while celebrating a handbag ala a Price is Right hand model, it is hard to deny an ad agency and some Dior executive are behind this Dior-iffic journey. While Lady Dior is entertaining there is little meat to bite into, and little story to hold onto. Eye candy is always fun for awhile but if Sarah Jessica Parker didn't have bad luck on the dating scene, »

Marion Cotillard For Dior

26 May 2009 7:22 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

"Lady Dior" that is. Oscar-winning Marion Cotillard is starring in a new online serial for her La Vie En Rose director Olivier Dahan.

You can see the first arch chapter here... "The Lady Noire Affair". Dahan still doesn't seem even remotely interested in (capable of?) coherency but that shouldn't surprise. I didn't love this blend of glamor, mystery and possibly shady ladies but it's short so I'll give the second chapter a whirl when it premieres.

Running serials as a cinematic medium are totally underutilized. I hope the web brings them back in vogue. More specifically, I wish they'd throw Clive Owen back behind the wheel for more adventures as The Driver, don't you? God, those were fantastic shorts.

Marion Cotillard Dons Dior 'Noire'

24 May 2009 3:32 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Photo: Dior Nope, I'm not turning the site into a women's fragrance portal, but just for a moment I guess I am giving "Lady Dior" a plug as Nathaniel over at Film Experience tips us off to a new online serial for Dior starring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and directed by her La Vie en Rose helmer Olivier Dahan. The short, which is titled Lady Noire, runs approximately six minutes and 30 seconds followed by two minutes of credits. As Nathaniel points out, the intentions of the piece (outside of its use as a marketing tool) isn't exactly there, but boy is it pretty to look at and I expect future installments will put the story together entirely. You can visit the official site to watch following chapters -- it looks like there will be four in all -- with the second one being Lady Rouge, but when it will debut is unknown. »

Marion Cotillard stars in "The Lady Noire Affair"

22 May 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

French actress Marion Cotillard has won an Academy Award, so why is she in a commercial?

Because it's not just any commercial: It's a six-minute short film for Dior, directed by Olivier Dahan, who was the director of Cotillard's Oscar-winning film about the life of Edith Piaf, La Vie en rose.

The focus may be the handbag, but the commercial (titled The Lady Noire Affair) is much more about Cotillard than what she carries with her.

I love Marion in those sexy strappy heels, especially when she's awaiting her helicopter to be flown away. And it looks like this won't be the only Dior short she will star in, as the end promises her return in Lady Rogue, coming soon.

Are you a Marion Cotillard fan? Do you like that designers are taking more liberties with viral videos and film to advertise? »

Le Vie En Rose Movie Review

5 May 2009 8:00 PM, PDT | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Director Olivier Dahan and co-writer Isabelle Sobelman create a compelling and heart-felt movie about Edith Piaf. Going into seeing this film I had no idea who Edith Piaf was but after watching the amazing movie I left with a sense of who Edith was, what she was going through, what she felt throughout her life, and a great appreciation for her. Edith Piaf was played by Marion Cotillard. Cotillard’s performance blew me away, every moment of it. It was hard for me to tell that it was the same actress playing Edith almost the entire time. The way she portrayed Edith in every age was beaut »
