Nicole Kidman to play Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco

10 April 2012 3:21 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Star of The Hours will appear in Olivier Dahan's film about Oscar-winning actor who became princess of Monaco

Nicole Kidman is set to play Grace Kelly, the Oscar-winning Hollywood actor who gave it all up for a life as princess of Monaco, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Grace of Monaco, by screenwriter Arash Amel, was on the 2011 Black List of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood. It follows the format of recent films such as My Week with Marilyn and The King's Speech, both of which examined a famous 20th-century figure by focusing on a particular moment in their lives. The story on this occasion centres on a six-month period in 1962 when French leader Charles de Gaulle and Monaco's Prince Rainier III were at odds over the opulent principality's standing as a tax haven. Kelly, then 33 and in the first flush of her royal career, was said to have »

Nicole Kidman to play Grace Kelly?

9 April 2012 8:30 AM, PDT | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

Looks like Nicole Kidman's still got it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman beat out practically every blonde in Hollywood vying to play the iconic Grace Kelly in the upcoming Grace of Monaco, an indie film focusing on a six-month period in 1962 when Grace maneuvered behind the scenes to save Monaco from a coup. The film is being directed by Olivier Dahan, who directed Marion Cotillard in the Edith Piaf biopic La Vie en rose, which she ended up winning an Oscar for.

Given how much critics love it when another actress portrays a legend (see Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe), this role is a big one, and also a bit of a surprise, no?

Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly? Call me crazy, but there are other Hollywood faces who a look a little (Ok, a lot) closer to the real thing right?

Nicole Kidman in Talks to Play Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco

6 April 2012 5:21 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Grace Kelly, star of Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, and High Noon, is an icon of Hollywood cinema, so stepping into her shoes will require a certain amount of boldness. Hopefully Nicole Kidman has what it takes since she's in talks to play the actress-turned-princess in the new film Grace of Monaco. Now, before anyone complains about "another biopic," the story will only focus on a six-month period in 1962 when Kelly, in her relatively new role as princess, worked behind the scenes to avoid a coup in Monaco when it "got into a heated dispute with France, which grew tired of the petite principality being a tax haven." The film is being developed as a lower budget project that's described in tone as being similar to The King's Speech. So, with a period setting, a popular public figure, some political issues, and a current A-list actress potentially involved, does this movie smell like Oscar-bait, »

Nicole Kidman to Play Grace Kelly in Olivier Dahan’s ‘Grace of Monaco’

6 April 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

In some “oh, wow, I totally forgot they were casting that” news, Variety reports that Nicole Kidman has “beaten out some stiff competition” to grab the role of Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco. That actress is currently in negotiations for the role in Olivier Dahan‘s film, which comes complete with a Black List script from Arash Amel. We’ve know about the project since October, when The Hollywood Reporter said that the film “sets Kelly’s personal story amid the politics of the time, in the vein of The King’s Speech.” The film will focus on Kelly’s life six years into her marriage to Prince Rainier III (and thus, six years into her princess-hood) and is set between December 1961 and November 1962. That is certainly a compelling time frame in Kelly’s life, marking her adjustment period to royalty and including the very young childhoods of two of her three kids. Though »

Is Kidman To Become Kelly?

6 April 2012 11:46 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

It has been reported that Australian actress Nicole Kidman is in talks to play Grace Kelly in Olivier Dahan’s Grace Of Monaco.

The plot focuses around Kelly’s life between December 1961 and November 1962 – at this point in her life she was already an Oscar winner, a mother of two and a princess. She’s asked to help save Monaco (she was married to Monaco’s Prince Rainier III) from trouble arising from it being considered a tax haven. The film will most likely record Kidman portraying Kelly’s life during this troublesome and complex time.

Pierre-Ange Le Pogam will produce the film, financing it with a full $15 million. Arash Amel, who is currently writing the sequel to I Am Legend (2007), is set to write the script while Dahan will direct. He directed Marion Cotillard all the way to an Oscar for La Vie En Rose (2007) – but he won’t »
