Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Nicholas was a student there at the time of Election (1999). He later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend school at Marquette University, graduating cum laude with degrees in History and Theatre. The middle of five children (two older brothers, two younger sisters), Nicholas has only seen his family expand as recently he became an uncle.

Graduated from Creighton Prep in Omaha, Nebraska. Director Alexander Payne, also an alumnus of the school, gave Nick his first break by casting him in "Election."

Moved out to Los Angeles after graduating college to pursue a full-time acting career.

Went to college at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Graduated 2002.

He hired an agent after his sophomore year at Marquette, when the movie, "Election", came out. Decided to complete his undergraduate degree (double major in History and Theatre)at Marquette University, graduating in 2002, before pursuing his acting career full-time.

In April 2009, awarded the Marquette University, J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, Young Alumnus Award.

Directed a ten-minute play, "Hearts Beating Faster", as part of his Beginning Directing Class at Marquette University for the Fall, 2000 semester.

Has two older brothers (Pat and Andy) and two younger sisters (Katie and Julie).

Participated in Theatre X (Milwaukee-based experimental theatrical ensemble - another Theatre X alumnus is Willem Dafoe).

In preparation for his role of Ben in the movie, "Rocket Science", he and fellow actress, Anna Kendrick, studied with a college debate coach and attended a two-day debate camp in Baltimore to learn the terminology, understand how debaters stand, and how they breathe.

Studied poverty and race issues in the Dominican Republic for a semester when he was a student at Marquette University.

His parents, Alan and Deanna, and his siblings are actively involved in Omaha-area community, school, and charitable organizations - serving on numerous boards and chairing fund-raising activities.
