When he was 13, he appeared in "Peter Pan" at the London Palladium. He later played Pip in a stage production of "Great Expectations".

He studied for the theater and had his first stage role at the age of eight. During WWII, he performed for thousands of Allied soldiers on the London stage in a five-year run of the "Sweet and Low" revues. He joined the Stratford Festival (Ontario, Canada) in 1970, and spent 22 seasons on its stages.
