He studied for the theater and had his first stage role at the age of eight. During WWII, he performed for thousands of Allied soldiers on the London stage in a five-year run of the "Sweet and Low" revues. He joined the Stratford Festival (Ontario, Canada) in 1970, and spent 22 seasons on its stages.
