Tribeca Review: ‘Literally, Right Before Aaron’ is a Lame-Brained Rom-Com

It’s hard to imagine Literally, Right Before Aaron existing without The Graduate as a template. Ryan Eggold’s lame-brained paint-by-numbers romantic comedy relies a little too heavy on functioning as homage to the Mike Nichols classic. The story is one we’ve seen a thousand times before: a white heterosexual guy who barely gets by and is still finding himself in his late 20s (or so) struggles to get over the pretty girl that’s moved on. (500) Days of Summer at least told the same emotionally-charged story with its own gusto. Here a non-linear attempt is made with an obnoxious variable aspect ratio device: “present day” scenes take place in letterboxed scope, while moments in the past are full frame. Perhaps it’ll look cool on VOD.

Justin Long stars as our would-be white guy hero Adam who is still nursing a break-up with Allison (Cobie Smulders) who recently

Patricia Clarkson, Katie Holmes, Olivia Wilde Celebrate Tribeca and Chanel’s Women’s Filmmaker Program

Patricia Clarkson, Katie Holmes, Olivia Wilde Celebrate Tribeca and Chanel’s Women’s Filmmaker Program
Patricia Clarkson, Katie Holmes, Olivia Wilde and Meg Ryan were among a bevy of high profile women in Hollywood who came downtown to Tribeca’s Locanda Verde restaurant to show their support for Tribeca Enterprises and Chanel’s inaugural Through Her Lens program.

Presented in collaboration with Pulse Films and facilitated by the nonprofit Tribeca Film Institute, the new program will support emerging women screenwriters and directors via a three-day workshop for seven rising filmmakers with master classes, one-on-one mentorship, peer-to-peer sessions, and will award $75,000 for project development.

Hosted by CEO of Tribeca Enterprises Jane Rosenthal, Tribeca EnterprisesPaula Weinstein and Chanel Global CEO Maureen Chiquet, the female-dominated lunch sparked plenty of conversation about Hollywood’s sexist work environments, wage disparity, lack of job opportunity both in front of and behind the camera, and other wrongful behavior.

However, there’s great reason to be positive. “I think what is happening

10 Producers to Watch: Campbell-Grobman Films
Friends Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell came together as producing partners in 2011 as Campbell-Grobman Films after working as exec producers to help set up films such as Lionsgate’s “Leatherface 3D” and Kat Coiro’s romantic comedy “A Case of You,” which stars Justin Long, Sienna Miller and Brendan Fraser.

Grobman also was an exec producer on the Michael Shannon-Chris Evans crime drama “The Iceman” and James Cox’s indie dramedy “Straight A’s,” both of which co-star Campbell.

The duo scored with 2013’s “Texas Chainsaw 3D,” which took in $47 million worldwide.

But don’t label them as horror queens.

“We’ve done a lot of different things,” says Campbell, whose acting credits include “Drive Angry,” “The Mechanic” and a fair amount of genre. “We were nominated for an Emmy for (documentary) ‘Brave Miss World,’ ” she adds, and their list also includes exec producing duties on “She’s Funny That Way,

"A Case of You" is a Case of Familiar Cliches Working Out

Facebook has changed the way people meet one another and how we learn more about people shortly after departing from their company. “Facebook stalking” has become a common enough of a concept that we now have a romance based on that very concept: A Case of You. While everything about it is pretty obvious after the first 30 minutes, from the conflict to the resolution, it still has enough charm and a few good performances to make it worth watching. Director Kat Coiro’s romantic comedy doesn’t have a whole lot of comedy, but its sincerity and cast (Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Sam Rockwell, Busy Philipps, Peter Dinklage, Brendan Fraser) give it some heft.

Review: Insipid, Painful Rom-Com 'A Case Of You' Starring Evan Rachel Wood & Justin Long

  • The Playlist
It was only a matter of time before someone tried to fully exploit the social media age for the evils of the generic romantic comedy and "A Case of You," a new Justin Long-led rom-com, does just that; abusing the Facebook platform to create the first Fb stalker comedy. Somehow, everything creepy and vile in this Kat Coiro-directed comedy ("L!fe Happens") is meant to seem comically cute and not the restraining-order freaky that it clearly is. Like all of these meretricious and morally reprehensible culture-farts, it’s presented as harmless and adorable at heart, but as the central quintessentially dorky character becomes more and more fawning and subservient, the actors themselves seem to border on queasiness. Co-produced, co-written and starring Justin Long and his pals, "A Case of You" is premised as a classic, nice-guys-finish-last romantic comedy where the nice guy actually manages to succeed, in spite of his spectacular ineptness.

A Case of You Is a Disappointing Romantic Comedy

A Case of You Is a Disappointing Romantic Comedy
Apple spokesgeek Justin Long's last major role was in Fox's New Girl, where he played the "adorkable" Zooey Deschanel's male counterpart. In A Case of You — presumably named after the Joni Mitchell song, though it's never mentioned in the film — director Kat Coiro keeps Long penned up in a similar Hipster Land — specifically, the kind of all-white Brooklyn whose ubiquity in the media persists no matter how many critiques are leveled at it.

A Case of You is a disappointing romantic comedy that aspires to social relevance until the third act, when it settles for pat Freudian revelations. The script takes a hoary sitcom trope — a boy goes to great lengths to find out what the girl he's smitten with likes so he can pretend to like those ...

Playing The Title Name Game on VOD: Or Why Your Film Should Start With the Letter 'A'

Playing The Title Name Game on VOD: Or Why Your Film Should Start With the Letter 'A'
"Adore," "After Earth," "And While We Were Here," "All is Bright" and "As Cool As I Am" are among the titles available in VOD now. Notice anything they all have in common? Yes, they all begin with the letter A. And that's no coincidence. "Everybody is coming up with titles like 'Aaa Action Star.' It's like the old days when people would name their company Aaa Acme Exterminator so they'd be listed first," said Bob Berney, CEO of Picturehouse. In fact, some productions are even changing existing titles to benefit from the alphabetical listing interface on most cable networks. Before its VOD release in August, the title of the film "While We Were Here" was changed to "And While We Were Here." By starting with an "A" rather than a "W," the film, directed by Kat Coiro and released by Well Go USA, increased its odds of being a VOD success.

Watch: Justin Long Cute-Stalks Evan Rachel Wood in Trailer for 'A Case of You'
In the internet age, it's hard not to Google search or Facebook stalk potential love interests in the hopes of finding some good info that you can use to your wooing advantage. In the new trailer for "A Case of You," Sam (Justin Long) scours the internet profiles of barista Birdie (Evan Rachel Wood) to learn her likes and hobbies so that he can transform himself into the perfect match. When Birdie falls for him, Sam has to keep up the act, or risk her finding out who he really is, which for some reason is a bad thing. Though the film seems to follow the usual romantic comedy trope of "I'm not who I said I was", albeit with a bit of a creepy stalker vibe, at least Long and Wood look like they've got some chemistry. And hey, is that Peter Dinklage in a comedic supporting role? The

Peter Dinklage is Sassy in Justin Long's 'A Case of You' Indie Trailer

Hot on the heels of news that Justin Long will be starring in Kevin Smith's strange horror film Tusk, we have the first trailer for his Tribeca Film Festival selected romantic comedy A Case of You. Long stars in the film which he also wrote along with Wedding Crashers star Keir O'Donnell and his brother Christian Long. However, when he creates a fake online profile that hits all the right notes for Birdie, she falls for this fake persona, and of course he has to keep up the act to keep her.
