Film Review: ‘Shut In’

Film Review: ‘Shut In’
As thrillers go, “Shut In” is conspicuously short of thrills. It’s an undistinguished and predictable hodgepodge, so blandly generic as to suggest that it was cobbled together by filmmakers referencing a how-to handbook who picked spare parts from other, better thrillers . Director Farren Blackburn and scripter Christina Hodson are billed as the responsible parties. But, given the prominent acknowledgement of a reshoot crew in the closing credits, it’s quite possible other cooks also were involved in the preparation of these slightly warmed leftovers.

Naomi Watts stars as Mary Portman, a child psychologist who conducts therapy sessions on the grounds of her isolated Maine home. She never wants to be too far from her 18-year-old stepson, Stephen (Charlie Heaton of Netflix’s “Stranger Things”), who was left paralyzed after an auto mishap that killed his father. But she’s obviously devoted to her work, and especially attentive to difficult

Fall Horror Movie Preview: A Definitive Guide to the Season's Macabre Offerings
2Nd Update (9/23, 3:23 Pdt): An earlier version of this article listed Elle Evans as the actress who plays the title role in The Love Witch. That distinction in fact goes to Samantha Robinson. We regret the error. Update (9/22, 11:37 Pm Pdt): The same day this article was published, Paramount pushed back the release date for Rings from October 28 to February 3, 2017. Original Article: Fall has traditionally been viewed as the prime time of year for the horror film, but this summer was actually a pretty good one for the genre, with movies like The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, and the surprise smash Don't Breathe doing gangbusters business in the midst of blockbuster season. Naomi Watts Sees Nightmares Become Reality in ‘Shut In’ Trailer
Naomi Watts is seeing her nightmares blur with reality in the suspenseful first trailer for EuropaCorp’s upcoming psychological thriller “Shut In.”

The trailer presents more questions than it answers. It paints Watts as a widowed psychologist who’s living an isolated existence in rural New England, where she takes on a new client, played by Jacob Tremblay (“Room”).

When the boy disappears from her home in a deadly snowstorm, she begins having nightmares and wonders if the boy is haunting her. However, another doctor (Oliver Platt) says her lack of sleep is making it impossible for her to tell what is real.

“Something is going on and it’s not just in my head,” she asserts. “I can prove it. You have to believe me.”

The film is directed by Farren Blackburn from a Black List script written by Christina Hodson. Charlie Heaton and David Cubitt also star.

Shut In – Possibly Your Oddest Upcoming Film – Releases New Images

For a movie that comes out November 11th, and stars Naomi Watts and Oliver Platt, there isn’t a lot of information about Shut In yet, but at least you now get a few images.

The film’s official synopsis describes it as a story about a widowed child psychologist (Watts) who lives an isolated existence in rural New England. Apparently caught in a deadly winter storm, she must find a way to rescue a young boy before he disappears forever… but, what that means exactly is anyone’s guess.

The exact wording is very odd, and put together with the, more or less, normal-looking images, which obviously involve something more scary than snow, it’s a little hard to guess exactly where this one is going.

Add to the guessing game that the film is directed by Farren Blackburn, who has really only done TV – Doctor Who, Daredevil, The Musketeers.
