He acted in Felicity Douglas's stage adaptation of Henry Cecil's novel, "Alibi for a Judge," at the Savoy Theatre in London, England with Amanda Grinling, John Arnatt, and Colin Gordon in the cast. Hugh Goldie was director.

Initially trained as an engineer, but went with an acting career after appearing with the Aberdeen Lyric Opera Company. He subsequently toured Britain with various repertory companies, before landing a part in a 1930 London production of "Othello", alongside Paul Robeson. Following that, he had a lengthy stint with the Old Vic in London, as well as on tour in Europe and Egypt.
