He acted in the Stratford Theatre Festival at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England with John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies, Leon Quartermaine, Anthony Quayle, Harry Andrews, and Barbara Jefford in the cast. Anthony Quayle was director.

Initially trained as an engineer, but went with an acting career after appearing with the Aberdeen Lyric Opera Company. He subsequently toured Britain with various repertory companies, before landing a part in a 1930 London production of "Othello", alongside Paul Robeson. Following that, he had a lengthy stint with the Old Vic in London, as well as on tour in Europe and Egypt.
