He acted in William Shakespeare's play, "Romeo and Juliet," at the Streatham Hill Theatre in Streatham Hill, London, England in an Old Vic Theatre production with Robert Donat, Constance Cummings, Marie Ney, Stewart Granger, Sonia Dresdel, Andre Morell, and Max Adrian in the cast. Esme Church was director.

Initially trained as an engineer, but went with an acting career after appearing with the Aberdeen Lyric Opera Company. He subsequently toured Britain with various repertory companies, before landing a part in a 1930 London production of "Othello", alongside Paul Robeson. Following that, he had a lengthy stint with the Old Vic in London, as well as on tour in Europe and Egypt.
