He acted in William Shakespeare's play, "Richard III," at the Old Vic Theatre in London, England with Emlyn Williams, Alec Clunes, Angela Baddeley, and Jean Cadell in the cast. Tyrone Guthrie was director.

Initially trained as an engineer, but went with an acting career after appearing with the Aberdeen Lyric Opera Company. He subsequently toured Britain with various repertory companies, before landing a part in a 1930 London production of "Othello", alongside Paul Robeson. Following that, he had a lengthy stint with the Old Vic in London, as well as on tour in Europe and Egypt.
