Reviewing every 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' season 2 episode

18 April 2016 6:35 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Netflix released the whole second season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Friday, and I'm going to offer some overall thoughts on the season, followed by specific takes on each episode, coming up just as soon as I ask whether Cate Blanchett is really a great actress, or just tall... Netflix made the first six episodes available to critics, and while I enjoyed most of those early installments, the back half of the season was by far the stronger part, and the phase of things where the shift from making episodes for NBC to making them for Netflix was much more apparent. Season 1 also turned more serialized towards the end, with the trial of the Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, and it had its emotional moments as Kimmy faced down her captor. But the later episodes of season 2 felt darker and more complicated in their attempt to address Kimmy's emotional damage. »

9 April 2016 1:26 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

For those who wished for Jacqueline Voorhees to meet a similarly materialistic character, your wish has been granted in the form of Anna Camp.

The “Pitch Perfect” and “True Blood” star is one of the newcomers who signed on to season two of Netflix’s comedy “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” playing New York housewife Deirdre Robespierre.

In the new clip, which the streaming service released this weekend, Deirdre’s chatting with Jane Krakowski’s Jacqueline, who divorced her husband in season one. And, from the backhanded compliments Deirdre slings her way on a bench in Central Park, it doesn’t look like the healthiest relationship.

“I can never tell if you’re trying to help me or destroy me,” Jacqueline laughs. As it turns out, Deirdre’s not really sure, either.

“I have a degree in political science from Princeton, and all that wasted mental energy has to go somewhere,” Deirdre replies. »

Second Opinion – Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)

15 March 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Kung Fu Panda 3, 2016.

Directed by Jennifer Yuh & Alessandro Carloni.

Starring Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons, Kate Hudson, James Hong, Randall Duk Kim, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan.

Synopsis:

Third instalment of the animated series, in which Po, the titular panda, finally meets his real father, and also has to do battle with Kai, a supernatural villain who drains the chi from every Kung Fu Master he encounters.

The quality of Dreamworks’ animated films has always varied greatly – from poor (Shark Tale) to great (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon) with a whole lot of mediocre in between (Bee Movie, Rise of the Guardians, Over the Hedge). Their track record with sequels has been likewise uneven – although they were financially successful, each Shrek was weaker than the last, and I’d personally rather watch the new Ghostbusters trailer on an endless »

'Flaked': How Will Arnett Reinvented Himself

11 March 2016 9:06 AM, PST | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Will Arnett has a not-altogether-outlandish theory: play a TV character long enough and audiences will find it increasingly difficult to separate you from that fictional construct. "People have this preconceived notion of me," contends the actor, best known as Gob Bluth, the egotistical, moronic magician on Arrested Development. "I'm Gob to them: this thoughtless sociopath who lives this bizarre, ego-driven life. That would be insanity. As I get older, I'm sort of fascinated with the idea of somebody who could construct an entire persona for themselves — one that was really, »

With one third of the Festival’s feature films being directed by women – the highest percentage in history – the Festival is becoming renown for its discovery of new and distinct voices.

“In our 15th year we wanted to deepen our support of American narrative filmmakers and have opened our competition to separately showcase the Us and International films,” said Genna Terranova, Festival Director.  “We are very impressed by the films this year and inspired to see new voices transcending traditions and taking risks by telling their stories their own way. John Waters, Greta Gerwig, Jim Jarmusch Turn Out for Metrograph Theater Opening

3 March 2016 2:19 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Last month the beloved single-screen institution the Ziegfeld Theater closed, yet another marker of how difficult it is to keep a small theater open in New York amidst competition from corporate chains such as AMC. But filmmaker Alexander Olch isn’t easily discouraged. He spent several years completing his first film, 2008’s “The Windmill Movie,” and while working with distributor Jake Perlin, he came up with the idea to open an independent theater in New York.

It took several years for it to come to fruition, but at Wednesday’s grand opening of Metrograph, a stylishly designed two-screen theater located in New York’s Lower East Side, Olch told Variety that while it was “a roller coaster, full of stops and starts” to get the theater open, he believes it will ultimately be a sound investment.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip review – kids’ franchise loses its way

14 February 2016 12:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A reliance on adult themes sees the animated chipmunks forgetting who their core audience is meant to be

“Don’t judge me, I saw Pink Flamingos…” The latest instalment in the singing chipmunks kids’ franchise comes replete with a John Waters cameo and fleeting gags about The Exorcist, The Shining, Taken, and The Terminator. Not so much winking at its childminder audience as waving at them with both hands, this sends the rodents to Miama via New Orleans. En route, an air marshal gets drunk on moonshine, the chips wind up on the anti-terrorist no-fly list, and a carnival band plays Uptown Funk with a sousaphone. The absence of long-standing series stalwart David Cross is a shame (Tony Hale can’t quite fill the gap) but Jason Lee is back, making it business as usual.

Box Office Democracy: Kung Fu Panda 3

4 February 2016 3:00 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

I had no interest in seeing either of the first two Kung Fu Panda movies. I thought they were a place for a brand of Jack Black shtick that I had grown tired of by the time 2008 got here (for the record: peak Jack Black was 2003’s School of Rock). I had a strong idea of what these movies were, and I didn’t want anything to do with it. As far as Kung Fu Panda 3 is concerned, I was wrong. This is a charming movie, a funny movie, sometimes even a touching movie. I regretted nothing about my time spent watching Kung Fu Panda 3, and it’s the first movie of 2016 to make me feel that way.

Kung Fu Panda 3 tells a story I was happy to hear told. Po (Black) is told he needs to start teaching the rest of his action team (voiced by »

The Story of Mr. Show’s ‘The Story of Everest’ Sketch

3 February 2016 10:51 AM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

“The Story of Everest” is one of Mr. Show With Bob and David’s most beloved — and most divisive — sketches. In it, an explorer returns to his parents after climbing Mount Everest and, while trying to recount his adventure, accidentally knocks over some trays of thimbles. Over the course of eight long minutes, we see him tell the story, fall, attempt to tell it again, fall, attempt, fall, attempt, fall, fall again, fall yet again, attempt, and then learn that his story has been made into a movie. However, to his dismay, he learns that the movie is about him falling down. We gathered Jay Johnston (who plays the explorer), David Cross (who plays his brother and co-created the show), and Bob Odenkirk (who plays his father and is the other co-creator of the show) to discuss the origins and execution of this arduous bit.Jay Johnston: We were »

'Kung Fu Panda 3' Takes the Weekend Box Office with $41M

31 January 2016 11:11 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While January isn't typically a big month for box office blockbusters, there can be the occasional movie that opens big. Two weeks ago, Ride Along 2 breathed some life into the new year with a respectable $35.2 million opening frame, but last weekend, it dropped a whopping 64.7% and slipped from first to third place, with the holdover The Revenant taking the top spot in its fifth week in theaters. This weekend is shaping up to be the biggest frame of the new year so far, with three heavily-promoted new releases, Kung Fu Panda 3, Fifty Shades of Black and The Finest Hours. Box Office Mojo is reporting that Kung Fu Panda 3 took the top spot at the box office with $41 million.

Kung Fu Panda 3 is expected to easily take the top spot with a projected $48 million, which isn't terribly surprising given this franchise's pedigree of critical acclaim and box office success. »
