Although still reeling from the failed domestic launch of “Battleship,” Universal still believes in the premise of toys-as-movies, and has entered negotiations to acquire the rights to Lego's robotic toy line Hero Factory. The writing duo behind 2010’s “Predators,” Michael Finch and Alex Litvak, will pen the script. [THR]

Brett Ratner is the latest filmmaker to head to Asia for his next project, teaming up with South Korea-based Cj Entertainment to develop an East-meets-West buddy action-adventure franchise called “The Golden Age.” He’s looking to produce and direct the first entry, titled “The Golden Age: The Lost Treasure of Zheng He.” [Variety]

Act Of Valor” co-director Scott Waugh is adding to his slate, planning to helm the adaptation of the video game series “Need For Speed” for DreamWorks. The film, written by George Gatins, is being positioned as a tentpole franchise in the vein of the “Fast and the Furious” films. »

Dan Harmon loses his Community

20 May 2012 11:30 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Commenting on the critics with Simon Columb...

Russ Fischer for \Film covers the latest, depressing, news regarding Community:

"When Community was renewed for a short 13-episode fourth season earlier this week, it looked like creator/showrunner Dan Harmon might not be back for the show’s continuation. There was talk that he would be on board as a consultant at least, but tonight word came down that Harmon has been replaced as showrunner, and any involvement with the show seems doubtful at this point. The new exec producer/showrunners will be David Guarascio and Moses Port, who previously worked on Happy Endings, Aliens in America and, er, Just Shoot Me. (At least that had some great David Cross moments, right? Looking for the silver lining here.)"

What a damn shame. Dan Harmon himself wrote a detailed blog post explaining what had happened - and »

Tony Hale Talks 'Arrested' & 'Veep'

28 April 2012 9:47 AM, PDT | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

Fans were elated by news that fresh installments of Arrested Development would finally see the light of day in 2013 -- but before Tony Hale slips back into Buster Bluth's prosthetic "monster" hand, he's trying out something even scarier: politics.

As one of the stars of HBO's sensational new series Veep, Tony gives audiences a behind-the-scenes look at life in the White House as he plays Gary Walsh, personal aide to Vice President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). And given the jangled nerves and unyielding desire to please everyone, you could say that Buster and Gary are sort of like long lost hermanos.

Insider.com: What attracted you to Veep?

Tony Hale: In addition to the fact that I'm always thankful for jobs, a big thing for me was that we were making this show in an election year. There's so much posturing and a lot of great soundbites. I'm very intrigued by the fact that these people »

Lindsay Lohan will attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner -- but she's not the event's oddest guest ever

25 April 2012 12:27 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This Saturday night, while you’re watching John Cusack brood in The Raven or catching up on Game of Thrones — or doing something besides staring at a glowing rectangle — a certain flame-haired actress will be dining with America’s commander-in-chief. That’s right: Lindsay Lohan, newly minted Lifetime movie star, will attend 2012′s White House Correspondents’ dinner. Her rep tells the Washington Post that Lilo is going to be a guest of Fox News host Greta van Susteren, who must be a closet fan of I Know Who Killed Me. And to make matters even odder, Lohan’s defense attorney »

Watch: Does Tenacious D Rock Too Hard?

25 April 2012 9:55 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Fans of rock-metal-folk-comedy duo Tenacious D rejoice, for the D's newest work is almost here. The band's new album "Rize Of The Fenix" drops on May 15th, and in anticipation of the event, they released a promo video on "Rolling Stone" starring Bob Odenkirk.

Odenkirk plays Dr. Bill Teetz of the Tinnitis Institute, who, along with rock bassist Rudy Sarzo, examine the effects of the new Tenacious D album on Tinnitis sufferers. Symptoms include spontaneous violence, bleeding from the ears and tears of joy. Be on the lookout for Jack Black and Kyle Gass themselves making an appearance in the video.

Tenacious D were discovered by Odenkirk and David Cross of "Mr. Show with Bob and David," who later produced the short-lived Tenacious D HBO program, along with Black and Gass. Clearly, the relationship has not fizzled. John Ennis, another "Mr. Show" alum, is featured in the video as well. »

‘The Muslims Are Coming!’ Trailer is Already Here

18 April 2012 1:00 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Like comedians of comedy that have to pray five times a day, The Muslims Are Coming! is a new documentary featuring stand-up performances, personal diary moments, and talking heads attempting to show a different angle on what it means to be Muslim in America. Featuring luminaries like Jon Stewart, David Cross, Russell Simmons and Soledad O’Brien , it focuses specifically on the comedy of Negin Farsad (who directed) and Dean Obeidallah (who also directed). Judging from the trailer, the flick looks really lighthearted even as it tackles an unavoidable social responsibility. There’s no real way to make a documentary about Islam without taking on the All-American baggage that comes along with it. Fortunately, this doc seems content to battle fear with jokes. Check it out for yourself: You can also donate to their Kickstarter fund to help finish the film. »

'Arrested Development' Season 4: Netflix releasing all 10 episodes at once next year

18 April 2012 10:49 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Pretty much everything about the revival of "Arrested Development" as a TV series has been unconventional, and Netflix's plan for rolling out new episodes is following suit.

At an appearance Tuesday (April 17) with show creator Mitch Hurwitz and several cast members at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said all 10 episodes of "Arrested's" fourth season will debut on the same day next year (just which day is yet to be determined). Production is scheduled to begin in the summer.

Hurwitz also told the crowd that the decision to release the show that way changed his approach to it. He had been thinking of focusing each episode on a single character, but it's now "becoming more like the old show again," he says.

"There's going to be some mystery sprinkled throughout this [but] instead of watching one a week and try to get ahead of it, »

Arrested Development will premiere its entire fourth season in one big lump

Really taking this whole “Arrested Development revival” gag to the next level, yesterday’s Netflix event at Las Vegas’ National Association of Broadcasters convention featured an appearance from creator Mitch Hurwitz and several members of the cast —Will Arnett, David Cross, Alia Shawkat, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jessica Walter—in which they avowed that, yes, they are really reviving Arrested Development after years of vague promises and reversals. And to make it up to you for that frustrating prolonged wait, they’re taking away any further delays (other than the actual production this summer) by debuting all 10 episodes on Netflix »

'Arrested Reunion' Is Evolving, Says Creator

18 April 2012 6:20 AM, PDT | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

When Mitch Hurwitz first announced the two-pronged Arrested Development reunion (first a 10-episode fourth season and then a feature film), he said that the weekly installments would each focus on one character. But at yesterday's Netflix-sponsored National Association of Broadcasters in Las Vegas (which served as an unofficial reunion for the cast), Mitch revealed that this is no longer the plan.

"That is now kind of evolving into becoming more like the old show again," Hurwitz said from the stage, explaining that the ten episode fourth season (which will premiere on a single day, as opposed to a staggered release) will function, in some ways, as a single narrative.

Marc Maron’s ‘Wtf’ Podcast Getting a Box Set

16 April 2012 8:59 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Marc Maron's "Wtf" podcast has gone in some sincerely surprising and heartening directions, including public radio and an IFC single-camera pilot based on the twice-weekly garage-recorded venture. Now Maron may very well pioneer the category of "podcast box set" by releasing the first 100 episodes of the show — now, with the show approaching its 300th episode, relegated to archival status and only accessible through premium membership to Maron's comedy-talk empire — in a collectible two-disc set for $50. The first hundred episodes aired from September 2009 through August 2010 and feature, among many others, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Patton Oswalt, Robin Williams, Zach Galifianakis, Ben Stiller, Sarah Silverman, Dave Attell, an infamous two-parter with publicly shamed joke-stealer Carlos Mencia, and an episode that unearthed not-wretched aspects of Dane Cook. The box set will also feature a video of one of Maron's live Wtf tapings from the Bell House in »

‘Arrested Development’ Actors To Reunite At Nab As Talks For New Season Continue

12 April 2012 2:08 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

A Q&A session with Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos at the upcoming Nab Show will feature Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz and several cast members of the cult Fox comedy series, which is producing a new season for the streaming giant. Scheduled to appear are Will Arnett, Jeffrey Tambor, David Cross, Jessica Walter and Alia Shawkat. I’ve learned that none of the Arrested Development actors have deals to return yet but negotiations are going smoothly and filming is expected to begin in the summer. As for the absence of stars Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Michael Cera and Tony Hale, sources chalk it up to unavailability, not to any any issues with their negotiations. Coincidentally, it was at the most recent Arrested Development reunion at The New Yorker Festival in October where Hurwitz announced the Arrested Development TV return. Also scheduled to appear during Sarandos’ Nab »

Listen: Bill Burr's Amazing Rant On 'Nerds' In Comedy

28 March 2012 11:00 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Stand-up veteran Bill Burr went on a six-minute tirade against the rise of nerds, specifically neo-geek comedians, on "Monday Morning Podcast." Singling out "The Office" and "awkward" stand-up comedians that he thinks are hurting the form, Burr ranted about the difference between "alt comics" and "club comics," and why he thinks the former are wrong to condescend to the latter.

"I really can't wait for the backlash on nerds," Burr said. "I've had it with them embracing the fact that they're awkward to the point of pretending to be awkward even when [they're] not." He spoke disdainfully of men who are "35 years old acting like some 14 year-old on his first date."

Burr, a Boston native generally regarded as one of the most talented stand-ups working today, is known to slay audiences both in traditional comedy clubs around the country as well as in "alt" rooms, such as the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. »

Netflix Passes On 'Terra Nova' While 'Arrested Development' Fans Cry “Steve Holt!”

28 March 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It’s the tale of two Fox television shows that never quite cut it on the major network, with “Terra Nova” barely squeaking out one season, but the cult-adored “Arrested Development” making it to three (with a film project and new series in the pipeline).

First, “Terra Nova” may not have that extra lifeline that fans were hoping for, as it looks like Netflix is going to pass on bringing the prehistoric family drama to its subscription-based services. Netflix started thinking about adding the series to its repertoire of upcoming scripted shows, but perhaps a storied production that included a $10 million-$20 million budget on its twice-delayed two-hour premiere, got the service, which is still reeling from some poor business decisions last year, to rethink the proposition.

Watch: Celebrities Read The Meanest Tweets

22 March 2012 8:08 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

What do Joel McHale, Kristen Bell, Louis C.K. and Roseanne all have in common? They're all celebrities, yes, but along with that they also receive some of the meanest tweets from strangers on a daily basis.

On Wednesday night's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," Kimmel celebated the 6th anniversary of Twitter by having his celebrity friends read the least flattering things ever said about them on the site. As you can imagine, some of them are pretty cutting while others are just confusing.

David Cross gets a "not my kind of comedian" comment, Will Ferrell gets called "Dum" (while he's sitting on the toilet, no less) and Will Arnett can't quite wrap his head around why people think he looks like Dracula. As a bonus, all the tweets are read with R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" playing in the background for maximum sadness.

Celebrities Read Their Favorite Mean Tweets On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'

Lots of celebrities claim that they never read their press clippings, but in this age of online social networking it's becoming harder for them to ignore what people say about them.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" (Weeknights, 12 a.m. Et on ABC) Wednesday night featured a slew of celebrities reading out their favorite tweets out of all the mean tweets that have been written about them.

Kristen Bell pretended to be upset by a tweet that called her "ugly." Kathy Griffin was abused for being a redhead, whereas Louis Ck and Kevin Nealon were just abused. Andy Dick's favorite was one that threatened severe physical violence against him.

But they weren't all scary or crazy. David Cross' fave was a tweet that said he "is not my kind of comedian, »
