Sdcc: Power Rangers reboot will use original Dinozords and Alpha 5, Aye Yi Yi Yi!

22 July 2016 10:22 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

While a load of Power Rangers reboot props, costumes and action figures are being showcased at this year’s San Diego Comic Con (the 90s lycra suits have been swapped out for crystallised armour and helmets – see above), more exciting revelations have emerged from the director and cast’s interview with Nerdist (no link, unfortunately, as the original article has disappeared from their site).

Firstly, director Dean Israelite has confirmed the Dinozord vehicles from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television show will feature in the film. These five Dinozords – Tyrannosaurus, Pterodactyl, Triceratops, Mastodon and Sabretooth Tiger (the last two aren’t technically dinosaurs) – combine to become the Megazord below.

And when the Megazord comes out, stuff has gotten real.

Aka, The Third Act.

Also confirmed for the 2017 Power Rangers reboot is Alpha 5, the permanently stressed robot assistant of the team’s blue-headed alien mentor Zordon (Bryan Cranston) – famous for his exasperated catchphrase, »

"Power Rangers" Reboot Details, Helmet Photos

22 July 2016 3:04 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

As fans of the "Power Rangers" franchise eagerly await the first trailer for the upcoming cinematic reboot, the cast and director of the film have spoken with The Nerdist about what to expect in Saban and Lionsgate's big-budget effort which is said to be a dark reimagining of the concept.

The report indicates the new Power Rangers will pilot the Dinozord robot vehicles in the film which will have the prehistoric-animal inspirations of the original series along with the same corresponding Ranger colors.

Added to that is Bryan Cranston's alien mentor Zordon who will once more be assisted by the helper robot Alpha 5. The film will also feature a new version of the "Go Go Power Rangers" theme song.

Meanwhile the full versions of both the helmets the cast will wear and the powercoins they will use in the film are on display on the main Comic Con floor. »

The Broad Green Layoffs: Why Good Movies Aren’t Enough to Avoid The Startup Curse

20 July 2016 11:11 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 37, and his brother, Daniel, 33, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures two summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical about its prospects. In a time when even the Weinsteins are struggling to survive, it was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.

Now Broad Green is laying off around 6 percent of its staff, all of whom work in the publicity department, the company confirmed to IndieWire. Broad Green’s publicity head Adam Keen, a former Warner Bros. publicity exec, has resigned. Marketing and communications personnel are traditionally the first casualties of cutbacks in Hollywood.

The layoffs were unsurprising. Ken Kwapis’s Sundance comedy “A Walk in the Woods” starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte managed $30 million, but that couldn’t counterbalance films like Ramin Bahrani’s well-reviewed real estate thriller “99 Homes” ($1.7 million domestic) and Sarah Silverman’s depressive drama “I Smile Back” ($58K). San Diego Comic-Con is set to play host to Angel Grove’s finest in a few days’ time and with all signs pointing to the unveiling of the movie’s first trailer, a new image for Power Rangers unmasks Lionsgate’s crew of fresh-faced heroes.

Hailing from USA Today as part of their continued Comic-Con preview coverage, this is perhaps our best look at the new Rangers to date, bringing together Dacre Montgomery, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott and Rj Cyler as they look to defend Angel Grove from an oncoming alien threat.

More News From The Web

That nemesis is, of course, Rita Repulsa, the iconic, power-mongering extra-terrestrial brought to life with manic glee by Elizabeth Banks. On the other side of the moral compass, Bryan Cranston is on board in the role of Zordon, and the acting veteran recently compared Lionsgate’s dark reimagining to The Dark Knight. »

Layoffs Hit Broad Green, Adam Keen Resigns as Publicity Chief (Exclusive)

19 July 2016 11:45 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Broad Green Pictures will lay off roughly 6% of its 90-person work force, Variety has learned. The cuts are mostly to junior level staffers and the studio does not expect to make additional reductions.

In addition, Adam Keen has resigned as head of publicity for Broad Green. Keen will stay on for a few weeks to help with the transition. The choice to move on was his, and he is weighing new job opportunities.

Broad Green has struggled to find its identity. The indie label had a hit with Robert Redford’s “A Walk in the Woods,” but failed to generate much box office for the Andrew Garfield drama “99 Homes,” which grossed $1.4 million, and Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups,” which couldn’t crack $1 million. The company is in the process of re-positioning itself, moving away from the arthouse and trying to back more mid-budget, commercially-oriented fare.

Box Office Weekend: Pets Ain’t ‘Fraid of No Ghostbusters

17 July 2016 9:01 PM, PDT | CinemaNerdz | See recent CinemaNerdz news »

The Secret Life of Pets is the top draw for a second week in a row; though it dropped to an estimated $50.6 million in revenue, it managed to keep Ghostbusters in a second-place finish with an estimated $46 million. The $144 million production did open to critical praise, but with the news that the film will not be released in China (and the months-long controversy spawned by its original release trailer), it does have a long road ahead to make back its costs. The Legend of Tarzan, in the meantime, despite three weekends in the top three slots, is still struggling to make any progress in worldwide gross, even with an estimated $11.1 million weekend.

Finding Dory landed in fourth with an estimated $11 million, but the film has now become the highest domestic-grossing animated film of all-time (though worldwide it still lags behind several other luminaries, including Zootopia), earning $445.5 million in the United States alone. »
