Sopranos Star's Gun Suicide

The Sopranos actor John Costelloe has committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

Costelloe, 47, played cook Jim "Johnny Cakes" Witowski in four episodes of the gangster drama in 2006.

His body was found at his home in New York, where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Sopranos co-star Joseph Gannascoli says, "I was shocked when I heard, and it still hasn't really sunk in. I never detected anything troubling about him. I enjoyed all the time I spent with him."

Costelloe's father, Michael, added: "It's beyond me. This is too much for me to handle."

The actor, who also worked as a firefighter, appeared in 2008 movie Doubt and in Die Hard 2. »

An actor from HBO's The Sopranos has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. John Costelloe, who played short-order cook Jim "Johnny Cakes" Witowski on the hit HBO series in 2006, was found dead in an apparent suicide on Dec. 18 at his Brooklyn, N.Y., home, Police spokesman Lt. John Grimpel confirms to the Associated Press. Costelloe's character was the gay lover of mobster Vito Spotafore, portrayed by Joseph Gannascoli. Police discovered his body after being called to the actor's residence when family members were unable to reach him. The flapjack slinger who won the heart of gay mafioso Vito Spatafore on The Sopranos is dead. New York police confirm that the body of actor John Costelloe was found Dec. 18 in his Brooklyn home, an apparent suicide. The 47-year-old actor was best known as the mustachioed short-order chef Jim "Johnny Cakes" Witowski, the unrequited object of affection of Joseph Gannascoli's on-the-lam capo Vito during the 2006 season. Costelloe's credits also included an episode of Law & Order, as well as small roles in such films as Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery, Die Hard 2 and, most recently, the current Oscar-bait release Doubt. »
