‘La La Land,’ ‘Suicide Squad,’ ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Win Make-Up & Hair Awards

Oscar frontrunner “La La Land” continued its awards momentum, taking best contemporary hairstyling Sunday night at the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards.

However, in terms of the Oscar race, makeup and hairstyling nominees “Suicide Squad” and “Star Trek Beyond” were both big winners, grabbing period/character make-up and special make-up effects, respectively.

Other movie winners were “Nocturnal Animals” for contemporary make-up and “Hail, Caesar!” for period hair styling.

TV winners included “Westworld,” ” Game of Thrones,” The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” “American Horror Story: Roanoke,” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again,” and “Dancing With the Stars.”

Make-up artist Leonard Engelman (“Ghostbusters”) and hair stylist Barbara Lorenz (“La La Land”) were feted for their lifetime achievements, while “American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy received the Distinguished Artisan Award.

‘La La Land,’ ‘Suicide Squad,’ ‘Westworld’ Win Make-Up and Hair Styling Awards

Nocturnal Animals,” “La La Land,” “Suicide Squad,” “Hail, Caesar!” and “Star Trek Beyond” all earned trophies from the Make-Up and Hair Stylings Guild at the org’s fourth annual awards ceremony.

Westworld,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Game of Thrones” and “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” won in the television categories.

Ryan Murphy (“Feud,” “American Crime Story,” “American Horror Story”) received the guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award, while makeup artist Leonard Engelman and hairstylist Barbara Lorenz picked up lifetime achievement honors.

The ceremony was held at The Novo by Microsoft at L.A. Live. Comedian Loni Love hosted for the second year in a row.

This year’s Oscar nominees for makeup and hairstyling are “A Man Called Ove,” “Star Trek Beyond” and “Suicide Squad.” Last year’s Emmy winners in makeup categories were “American Horror Story: Hotel,” “Game of Thrones” and “Key & Peele.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” earned high marks from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, garnering three nominations for their annual awards honoring achievements in film, television, commercials, and theater. It’s not on the Oscar shortlist of seven , however.

Eligible for Hair and Makeup Oscars are Guild nominees “Deadpool,” “Florence Foster Jenkins,” “Hail, Caesar!,” “Star Trek Beyond” and “Suicide Squad.” Not Oscar shortlisted, however, are Guild nominees “La La Land,” “Loving,” and “Nocturnal Animals,” which garnered two nominations apiece. Also ineligible for the Oscar are nominees “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Silence,” “Hacksaw Ridge,” and “Doctor Strange.”

On the television side, “Saturday Night Live” led with four nominations, followed by “Westworld,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Penny Dreadful” with three each. “Transparent,” “Stranger Things,” and “Empire” each received two.
