On The Road Movie: Mixed Review/Variety

23 May 2012 1:12 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Cannes Film Festival movie review: In Variety, Justin Chang says the following about Walter SallesOn the Road, a film adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s 1957 novel starring Garrett Hedlund (Dean Moriarty / Neal Cassady), Sam Riley (Sal Paradise / Jack Kerouac’s alter ego), and Kristen Stewart (photo, as Marylou / LouAnne Henderson): "Evocatively lensed, skillfully made and duly attentive to the mercurial qualities of its daunting source material, Walter Salles’ picture pulses with youthful energy but feels overly calculated in its bid for spontaneity, attesting to the difficulty and perhaps futility of trying to reproduce Kerouac’s literary lightning onscreen. "… The blur of events and surface impressions onscreen … feels overlong at 139 minutes, yet nowhere near long enough, and even Riley’s appealing, bright-eyed turn can’t keep Sal from seeming a passive, psychologically weak protagonist. "The other actors hit their notes effectively, particularly [Viggo] Mortensen and [Tom] Sturridge as the respective alter egos »

Film4 Backs Ben Wheatley's Cops & Monsters Flick 'Freakshift,' Director Also Planning English Civil War Drama

23 May 2012 7:00 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It's a good day to be Ben Wheatley. The director, who's become one of the most talked-about new directors around thanks to "Down Terrace" and "Kill List," is making his Cannes debut today with his dark, Edgar Wright-exec-produced comedy "Sightseers" -- a press screening is underway as we speak, and we'll have our verdict for you later this evening. And just as that film is released into the wild, Wheatley seems to have landed financing for his most ambitious project yet, and is planning yet another film to follow that.

According to Screen Daily, Film4, which was partially behind both "Kill List" and "Sightseers," has decided to reteam with Wheatley on "Freakshift," a cops vs. monsters movie which the filmmaker will direct next year. The company is currently looking for co-financing on the project, which will see the director working on his biggest canvas to date. Screen Daily don't »

Rachel McAdams Joins Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Most Wanted Man

23 May 2012 6:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Rachel McAdams has be cast along side Phillip Symour Hoffman in a film adaptation of the novel The Most Wanted Man.

Anton Corbijn is directing the film from a script written by Andrew Bovell. The story "takes place in present-day Hamburg, Germany, where a mysterious, near-dead half-Chechen, half-Russian man on the run arrives in the city's Islamic community desperate for help and looking to recover his late Russian father's ill-gotten fortune."

Hoffman is set to play the chief of a "covert German spy unit who works to solve the mystery of the man's identity." McAdams will take on the role of a "woman who becomes involved in the international intrigue."

McAdams is a talented and beautiful actress, and I think her and Hoffman will end up making a solid international thriller.

Rachel McAdams Joining Philip Seymour Hoffman In A Most Wanted Man

21 May 2012 6:12 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Rachel McAdams seemed to have been hitting a lull in her career in the last few years, sputtering out with the actually delightful workplace comedy Morning Glory, not to mention a string of flops before that-- The Time Traveler's Wife and State of Play, plus the virtually unseen indies The Lucky Ones and Married LIfe. But last spring's Midnight in Paris was the start of a new winning streak that culminated with this year's The Vow, a romantic drama that has actually outgrossed her monster hit The Notebook from 2004. Sure, she hasn't turned The Vow into a mega-year quite the way her co-star Channing Tatum has, but she's doing pretty well, and she looks to be continuing her hot streak with A Most Wanted Man, the John le Carre novel adaptation that already has Philip Seymour Hoffman set to star. (Please scroll down.) "Especially when you have grown to love those people. When I played Joan Jett, I couldn’t improvise. I felt so weird putting words in her mouth. I always referred to her. And in this case, we wouldn’t be doing On the Road right, unless it was found, unless so much of it was, like, learned and then forgotten, so we could actually just discover it ourselves." Screenslam will be posting several interviews with various On the Road talent in the next few days. Rachel McAdams Gets Serious with 'A Most Wanted Man'

21 May 2012 8:58 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Rachel McAdams is one cool lady, but her career is particularly white hot right now. She's just added another awesome project to her to-do list, the dramatic thriller "A Most Wanted Man." It promises to be a seriously cool spy drama, with Phillip Seymour Hoffman costarring and famed photographed and director Anton Corbijn behind the camera.

"A Most Wanted Man" is based on the novel by bestselling author John le Carre, whose other juicy novels have been turned into movies like "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "The Constant Gardener." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hoffman will be playing the top dog among German spies who's trying to ferret out the true identity of a man on the run who shows up in Hamburg. While McAdams' role isn't quite as clear yet, she's definitely wrapped up in the mystery.

McAdams Finds A Most Wanted Man

20 May 2012 5:02 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Following the casting of Philip Seymour Hoffman in February, Anton Corbijn's adaptation of John Le Carre's A Most Wanted Man now has its second lead, in the shapely form of Rachel McAdams. The story follows Issa, a refugee lately escaped from a Turkish prison and on the run from the Swedish authorities, who claims to be Chechen, but, rather mysteriously, doesn't speak the language. Arriving in Hamburg, he reveals he has the means to access a very private bank account containing a legacy of dubious origin. It's not long before British, German and American intelligence agencies are paying close attention.Hoffman is aboard the film as German spook Gunther Bachmann, and McAdams is being described as "a woman who becomes involved in the international intrigue." We'd guess that that makes her Annabel Richter, employed as Issa's lawyer, but that's not confirmed at this stage.Edge Of Darkness co-writer Andrew Bovell wrote the screenplay, »

Rachel McAdams Joins Phillip Seymour Hoffman In Anton Corbijn’s ‘Most Wanted Man’

20 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

While Passion just wrapped things a few weeks back or so, Rachel McAdams isn’t quite done with suspense, intrigue, Germany, and films based on pre-existing materials. THR says she’ll next do a project that, though similar, is possibly even more exciting than the return of Brian De Palma — and, believe you me, that’s saying a thing or two.

The film at hand is Anton Corbijn‘s third feature, A Most Wanted Man, which also happens to be the next silver screen take on John le Carré. Phillip Seymour Hoffman signed for the leading role back in February; such a part will see him play “chief of a covert German spy unit” trying to crack the mystery behind Issa, a half-Chechen/half-Russian man who, under serious injuries, arrives in Hamburg’s Islamic sector dodging authorities and trying to recover his deceased, Russian father’s fortune. It's 'About Time' For Rachel McAdams & Richard Curtis; Actress Lines Up Anton Corbijn's 'A Most Wanted Man'

10 May 2012 8:04 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It looks like Rachel McAdams is going to continue the one-for-them-one-for-me approach. The actress has been oscillating between more indie minded/less commercial fare (relatively speaking) like "The Lucky Ones," "Midnight In Paris" (who would've predicted it would have been a smash hit?) and "State Of Play" and bigger/schlockier stuff like "Sherlock Holmes" and this year's "The Vow." But it seems the actress is getting a bit more risky and frisky. She's currently lensing "Passion" with Brian De Palma and the provocative first image was unveiled recently, and it looks like the rest of her year will be dominated by a rom-com and a thriller.

First up, McAdams replaces the previously attached Zooey Deschanel in "About Time," the latest from "Love Actually" writer/director Richard Curtis, that tells the story of a man who can time-travel who ends up meeting the girl of the dreams. McAdams will lead the pic so-starring with Domhall Gleeson, »

Rachel McAdams in Another Tearjerker? It's 'About Time'

10 May 2012 8:00 PM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Rachel McAdams is going to make you believe in the (sometimes supernatural) power of love … again.

The adorable star of such romantic dramas as "The Vow" and "The Notebook" is set to continue breaking hearts as she signs on to play the female lead in "About Time," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"About Time" follows in the footsteps of McAdams' "The Time Traveler's Wife" and "Midnight in Paris" as it adds a little otherworldly spice to all the kissy-kissy with it's feel-good story of a man who can travel through time and the complications that arise when he meets the girl of his dreams.

McAdams will be playing the dream girl in question (a role to which Zooey Deschanel had previously been attached), with Domhnall Gleeson (Brendan Gleeson's son) set to play her space/time-bending suitor. The cast also includes Bill Nighy, Tom Hollander, Margot Robbie, Lydia Wilson and Vanessa Kirby. »
