After spending most of the past decade cranking out awful horror remakes, it's reasonable to expect filmmakers to figure out what makes the original films such fan favorites. Yet, with one exception, studios keep mucking things up and the remake of Night of the Demons is no exception.
The film opens with a flashback to 1920's New Orleans, as a well dressed woman hangs herself off the balcony of the Broussard mansion, rather than be captured by a demon possessed gentleman. Perhaps hanging is too weak a term, as the rope appears to be woven out of piano wire and pops the poor lady's head clean off her shoulders. A bit over the top, but the physical effect is well executed and the flashback, »

Lamar Odom might not have been the only member of the extended E! family scoring at last night Lakers-Warriors game. Cue the gossip mills: Halle Berry's ex/baby daddy Gabriel Aubry was spotted courtside with Kim Kardashian. New couple alert? The two did look pretty cozy during the game, giggling throughout. And both are free agents at the moment, given how Gabriel and Halle called it quits last spring, while Kim and Dallas Cowboy Miles Austin ended things in September. Since then she's been busy denying any hookups with John Mayer, Kanye West, Chris Brown and One Tree Hill's Michael Copon. But so far she's mum on Gabriel. Hmm... Incidentally, the Lakers pummeled the »
HollywoodNews.com: Is Kim Kardashian really looking for love? Or is this all a ploy for the cameras?
A source for the gossip column revealed that Kim was texting between shots. “They had no chemistry whatsoever.”
“They seemed bored with each other when the camera was off and just played it up for the show.”
Kardashian’s publicist rebutted Page Six’s cynicism over Copon: “not true. They have known each other for years. Watch the show, you will see how it plays out.” Copon and Kardashian have been friends since they acted in Nickelodeon’s “Beyond the Break.”
Nonetheless, Kim remains a highly sought after gal. John Mayer and Facebook co-founder Sean Parker have their eye on her.

Whoever thought that constantly remaking these cheesy '80s teen horror films, using a cast of thirty-something, D-List actors was is good idea, obviously has more optimism than creativity. This low-budget remake of Night of the Demons is a mess on so many levels, we can only wonder why someone wasted their whole weekend making this film. Assuming it took that long.
The original Night of the Demons was no masterpiece to begin with, although it had enough of a cult following to earn two awful sequels. Why we needed to revisit this unimaginative story is a bigger mystery than the motivations of the titular demons. If schlock-meister Adam Gierasch, the writer-director of this cinematic suppository, had managed to improve on the first film, then an argument could be made for the existence of this ridiculous retread. Alas, Gierasch only manages to turn '80s mediocrity into modern manure.

This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.
Directed by Nimród Antal
Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey. Predators also star Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Louis Ozawa Changchien. »
The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

Though honestly, if my “Scorpion King” Iq is correct, technically he’s just some dude who hasn’t risen to the level of the Scorpion King ala the Rock in the “Mummy Returns” and after that, his own “The Scorpion King” movie. There was a direct-to-dvd movie that told the (made up bullshit) origins of the Scorpion King as you’ll recall (read my brilliant review of that movie here), and this latest movie, given the casting, would seem to be a follow-up to that little piece of genius. News from What’s Playing is that Victor Webster (yeah, I have no idea who he is, either, but apparently he’s been in “Castle” and “Melrose Place” — that’s him looking all shirtless to your left) is in line to play the third incarnation of “The Scorpion King”, taking over for, of course, the Rock and Michael Copon, who played »
