Joanna Lumley Joins Stars To Encourage Companies To Hire Veterans

Joanna Lumley, Ray Winstone and Richard Wilson are among celebs who will appear in a series of short films which aimed at getting more military veterans into ‘civvy street’.

Video: Veterans Work | What Does An Idea Sound Like?

Downtown Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville, Diy Sos star Nick Knowles and ex-EastEnders Larry Lamb and Michelle Collins also highlight the skills, attitude and knowledge ex-soldiers, sailors and airmen can bring to employers.

Entitled, ‘Veterans Work’, the films, by The Drive Project, were produced to encourage UK businesses to consider veterans as viable options to fill vacancies.

Their release follows a study by Deloitte and the Officers’ Association and the Forces in Mind Trust, which revealed UK plc is failing to realise the potential of veterans, putting ex-military personnel at a disadvantage.

The alarming revelation emerged despite nearly 2,000 British businesses having signing the Armed Forces Covenant – a Ministry of Defence scheme designed

Grange Hill: revisiting 12 memorable school trips

Alex Westthorp Nov 16, 2016

Remember when Grange Hill went to the Isle Of Wight? Or the escaped puma? Here are 12 memorable school trip episodes from the early years...

With just over thirty years worth of screen time, there are plenty of memorable moments in Grange Hill. From its inception in February 1978 the programme proved both entertaining and controversial. It tackled many difficult subjects head-on: bullying, vandalism, racism, censorship, shop-lifting, school uniform protest, teenage pregnancy and - most famously of all - drugs. However, every now and again it would attempt to give viewers a break from the everyday and head off on a day trip or weekend excursion.

Helene Palmer

Actor known for her role as Ida Clough in Coronation Street

The actor Helene Palmer, who has died aged 82, donned a black wig and frumpy overalls in the television soap opera Coronation Street to play Ida Clough, one of a triumvirate of stroppy machinists who tested Mike Baldwin's patience at his denim garment factory in Weatherfield in the 1970s. With Ivy Tilsley and Vera Duckworth, Ida featured from 1978 until 1988 as a militant unionist at Baldwin's Casuals – in a decade when strikes and lockouts were the order of the day in the real world.

The loudmouthed Ida challenged Ivy for the role of shop steward in 1980 but lost the election. She lost her job when, eight years later, she shopped Mike for drink-driving and he received a ban. At various times, Ida's children – the even louder Muriel (Angela Catherall) and the dopey van driver Bernard (Jeffrey Longmore) – worked at the factory.

Soon, Torchwood is forced underground, being hunted down as the government takes swift and brutal action. In addition to the regular team,

Torchwood: Children Of Earth - Day One Review

What an episode! The popular Doctor Who spin off Torchwood made it’s triumphant return this evening on BBC One, and despite the fact it was a one hour episode it had the air of a major Hollywood picture around it.

An ordinary day becomes a world of terror as every single child in the world stops. A message is sent to all the governments of Earth: ‘We are coming’. But as a trap closes around Captain Jack, sins of the past are returning, as long-forgotten events from 1965 threaten to reveal an awful truth.

That was the synopsis to the first episode in the Torchwood five-part miniseries, which has just aired on BBC One, and it barely manages to express the sheer size of production that this new series of the popular sci-fi drama promises.

Government conspiracies, Alien Abduction and painful past memories all made up the 60 minute episode, which
