DVD Playhouse—December 2011

By Allen Gardner

The Rules Of The Game (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members, »

Brilliant First Poster For American Reunion Takes Us Back To The Beginning

9 December 2011 3:30 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

If you’re at all sceptical about the upcoming sequel in the American Pie series, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Everything we’ve seen so far – which includes two terrific trailers, and plenty of other great stuff – has been completely spot on.

With all of the original prinipals from the original three films reprising their roles, American Reunion looks like it’s going to be one of next year’s best comedies.

One of the first things we saw from the film was the teaser poster back in August, and MTV Movies have now got the first proper poster to share with us, and it’s brilliant, paying homage to American Pie’s instantly recognisable poster from way back in 1999 (which you can see underneath in case you’ve forgotten, courtesy of Wikipedia).

The film’s been co-written and -directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the pair »

New ‘American Reunion’ Poster Calls Back to Old ‘American Pie’ Poster

8 December 2011 3:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Since so much of the appeal of American Reunion lies in whatever lingering affection you have for 1999's American Pie, it's only natural that the marketing folks would try at every turn to remind you of how much you loved the first movie. That tactic is especially evident in the film's just-released poster, which recreates the one from the original. Sure, Jim (Jason Biggs) has clothes on, Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) is holding a baby bottle instead of a flute, Oz (Chris Klein) has way less hair, and the gang is apparently eating pies now instead of fucking them -- but the overall picture looks very familiar. Check it out after the jump. Here's the American Reunion poster: [2] And for comparison, the American Pie one: [3][both posters via Movies.com [4]] I'm really hoping that the substitution of a baby bottle for the flute doesn't imply that Michelle will be doing to the former in this installment »

American Reunion Featurette Has Americans, Reunions, and American Reunions

Directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are bringing the gang back together. Yup, that’s right. Jim, Michelle, Stifler, and their friends are now all grown up and reuniting in East Great Falls, Michigan for their high school reunion. Sex nonsense and sex nonsense-related shenanigans ensue. One presumes, anyway. Anyhoo. Check out a behind-the-scenes featurette for “American Reunion”, the 25th installment in the “American Pie” franchise. I personally liked the 7th movie, “American Closet Lover” myself. It was about Americans in closets, loving. The cast includes Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Katrina Bowden, Natasha Lyonne, Jason Biggs, Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, John Cho, Tara Reid, Jennifer Coolidge, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Dania Ramirez, and Eugene Levy. Our 15 Favorite Idiots (in Movies)

28 November 2011 3:00 PM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

They say the U.S. doesn't make things anymore -- that we've lost our way and are no longer No. 1.

Well, "they" are wrong. No country on Earth is capable of producing the quantity, quality and quantity of idiots that our fair land churns out with alarming regularity.

Affable favorite Paul Rudd continues the proud tradition of representing our country's most common commodity in "Our Idiot Brother," nwe on DVD and Blu-ray this week. But can he be stupid enough to join the ranks of elite morons, or does he still have a few more brain cells to kill? Let's review his imbecilic competition.

New American Reunion Trailer Shows the Gang Is All Grown Up

2 November 2011 9:18 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The last trailer for American Reunion was a Nsfw red band trailer that showed that though Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) have adult responsibilities, the two still manage to get interrupted during some private moments. This latest trailer shows that the rest of the American Pie gang have all grown up, too — even Tara Reid!

The last time the group was together was for Jim and Michelle's nuptials in 2003's American Wedding, but a high school reunion brings the East Great Falls Class of 1999 back together to see what's different and what's the same (Seann William Scott's Stifler, obviously) after all these years. Even Jim's Dad (Eugene Levy) is in a new, single place in his life, though Stifler's Mom (Jennifer Coolidge) may not let it stay that way.

Next Showing: American Reunion opens April 6, 2012

Great New Full-Length Trailer For American Reunion

2 November 2011 2:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Good things come to those who wait. After four sequels (which I refuse to consider count as part the American Pie films) since the original American Pie cast were together, we’re finally getting close to the fourth (technically, eighth, but I refer you to my previous bracket) film in the excellent American Pie franchise.

They may not be ground-breaking, but they were a part of my adolescence, and they’re a lot of fun to just sit back and enjoy.

We’ve been getting some great things over the past few months from the film, most recently with the first red band trailer and some excellent new images, and now we’ve got a full-length, green band, suitable-for-work second trailer to share with you, courtesy of Yahoo Movies via The Playlist.
