To understand the connection between sports and streaming video, consider this: Amazon’s $1 billion per year deal to stream Thursday Night Football is literally changing U.S. internet habits. Comcast president Mike Cavanagh, speaking Dec. 4 at a Ubs conference, said Amazon’s Tnf game “comprises roughly 25 percent of all internet traffic on Thursday nights” and that it single-handedly “moved peak data usage on our broadband network from Sunday night to Thursday night.” And Comcast, with more than 32 million broadband internet subscribers, knows where users are spending that valuable bandwidth.
It’s a cliché to say that sports is the glue holding together what’s left of the pay TV bundle, but while the bundle isn’t dead yet, every media company with sports rights has decided to go all in on streaming. The action might have been on the gridiron during Sunday night’s NFL game, but NBC didn’t waste any opportunity to put the spotlight on the Kansas City Chiefs’ most famous fan up in the suites.
Taylor Swift was at her second consecutive NFL game Sunday, once again cheering on Kansas, amid rumors that she and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce have started up a romance.
NBC cameras caught her in a suite alongside other famous faces, including Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, Hugh Jackman, Sophie Turner and filmmaker Shawn Levy. She was seen celebrating and cheering as the Chiefs scored a touchdown against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in the first quarter, among other moments.
In addition, NBC aired trailers for her upcoming concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which opens Oct. 13, and cut to footage of Times Square, where video highlights of Swift’s...

On Thursday evening, at New York’s Paley Center for Media, NBC Today anchor Savannah Guthrie moderated a panel with the team from NBC’s Sunday Night Football. So it stands to reason that she had to ask the tough questions.
“What do you know about Taylor Swift?” Guthrie said to Mike Tirico, Cris Collinsworth and the rest of the SNF team.
NBC’s game this week sees Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs taking on Zach Wilson and the New York Jets. It was looking like a snoozer, with the Chiefs dominant this season, and the Jets flailing after losing quarterback Aaron Rodgers to an injury just minutes into their first game of the season.
And then Taylor Swift showed up in Kansas City last weekend.

The CW continues it push into sports.
The network has picked up the rights to highlights and analysis series Inside The NFL. It comes after the weekly series was dropped by Paramount+ earlier this year.

It will debut on September 5 at 8pm. It will also stream on The CW app.
It comes after The CW made the controversial decision to air the Liv Golf League and has been making noise about wanting to increase its sports coverage.
Produced by NFL Films, The CW is now looking for new hosts and producers. Previous hosts have included Dan Marino, Phil Simms, James Brown, Cris Carter, Cris Collinsworth, Brandon Marshall and Ray Lewis.

The new team at NBC’s “Football Night in America” has yet to work a “Sunday Night Football” game in this year’s official NFL season, but they’ve already weathered at least one storm.
During NBC’s broadcast of the 2022 Hall of Fame Game last month, Jason Garrett, the former Dallas Cowboys head coach who is still relatively new to the art of TV sportscasting, got a bulletin in his ear courtesy of producer Matt Casey. “Looks like we have a rain delay,” Garrett recalls being told. “You guys are going to have to fill for half an hour.” Garrett, who has been working NBC’s Usfl broadcasts to warm up for his new stint on “Football Night,” took a moment to collect himself: “Oh, this is interesting.”
Everything that could have gone wrong with that telecast did, says Maria Taylor, who is taking over as the main host of the program this season.

NBC has new teams leading both “Sunday Night Football” and “Football Night in America.” And it will serve up new logos for both shows as well.
For 16 years, viewers of both football broadcasts have seen their titles arranged in a “shield” design. This season, the programs are getting a new look, with title logos that can be displayed more readily no matter the venue on which each program is being watched.
“It’s not a one-size-fits-all design direction. It’s far more nimble and less limiting than what a metallic shield was able to offer,” says Mark Levy, the NBC Sports senior vice president of original productions and creative who oversees the design of the division’s programming. “It just offers a flexibility that allos designers and animators a level of creativity” they didn’t have in the past.

Mike Tirico replaces Michaels on NBC’s Sunday Night Football, joining returning analyst Cris Collinsworth. NBC announced last month that Mike Tirico would replace the legendary Al Michaels as the voice of Sunday Night Football. Now, the network has revealed the rest of the team.
It’s now confirmed that Michaels’ stalwart broadcast partner, Cris Collinsworth, will join Tirico for what will be Collinsworth’s 14th season in the SNF broadcast booth.
It won’t exactly be a new experience for either, since Tirico and Collinsworth have teamed to call 21 NFL games since the former joined NBC Sports in 2016.
After Michele Tafoya exited NBC’s marquee football franchise amid controversy, the network has named Melissa Stark as its new sideline reporter.
Stark knows the terrain. She previously served as sideline reporter for ABC’s Monday Night Football for three seasons and has been a host and reporter for NFL Network since 2011.
After the news was announced, Stark took to Twitter and wrote, “Can’t Wait!

Melissa Stark clearly knows the value of staying in touch.
The veteran sportscaster served as the sideline reporter for “Monday Night Football” between 2000 and 2002, when she was just 26 and the game — then one of TV’s biggest weekly events — was still broadcast on ABC. She worked with everyone from the legendary TV executive Don Ohlmeyer to “Mnf” announcers like John Madden and Dennis Miller — and with Fred Gaudelli, the producer who would move on to work for NBC Sports and oversee “Sunday Night Football,” then all of NBC’s NFL coverage. With four young children at home, and having logged stints at ABC, NBC News’ “Today” and MSNBC, Stark in 2008 eventually chose to cut back on TV duties and focus on family. In 2011, she had the chance to take up new duties at NFL Network, and asked Gaudelli for his counsel on the move. “He has always been a mentor and a sounding board,...

After stepping into the booth several times last season, Mike Tirico has been tapped as the play-by-play announcer for “Sunday Night Football” on NBC with the legendary Al Michaels heading to Amazon Prime Video to call games for the streamer’s NFL package.

Michaels, the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 2011, also called his 11th Super Bowl in February to match the most for a TV commentator. After the legendary Al Michaels all but confirmed his move to Amazon to call games as part of the streamer’s new NFL package, NBC announced today that Mike Tirico will “join Cris Collinsworth full-time in the booth this season” for Sunday Night Football. The announcement would seem to confirm Michaels’ exit.
Tirico has made no bones about wanting the job, telling Richard Deitsch on his Sports Media Podcast last month that the SNF spot would be “a lifetime opportunity for me.” That’s saying something, given Tirico marshaled NBC’s Olympics and Super Bowl coverage this year.
Tirico explained that he’s kept himself sharp by calling games regularly. He likened play-by-play to a muscle that needs to be exercised.

Al Michaels, the giant of sports broadcasting who is nearing the end of his contract with NBC for Sunday Night Football, seems increasingly likely to be the first marquee booth hire at Amazon.
The play-by-play man all but confirmed the shift during a podcast interview with Sports Illustrated, which was posted this morning. NBC’s Cris Collinsworth “So Sorry” For Being “Blown Away” By Female Pittsburgh Steelers Fans’ Fervor
Cris Collinsworth has seen a lot in 30-plus years of covering the NFL, but apparently he hadn’t encountered fervent female fans until this week in western Pennsylvania. And today he has apologized for noting that on-air.
During NBC’s telecast of a rare Wednesday afternoon NFL game, the veteran color commentator was remarking about the fervor of Steelers fans. We then added: “In particular, the ladies that I met. They had really specific questions about the game. I’m like, ‘Wow.’ You’re just blown away by how strong the fans are here in this town.”
That created a backlash and led the former Cincinnati Bengals star receiver to apologize a few hours after the game ended, with the undefeated Steelers beating their division rivals 19-14.
“Today on our broadcast I made a reference to a couple of women that I met in Pittsburgh who so impressed me with...

That created a backlash and led the former Cincinnati Bengals star receiver to apologize a few hours after the game ended, with the undefeated Steelers beating their division rivals 19-14.

Mike Tirico’s autumn has converged with his spring and summer.
The NBC sportscaster had originally planned to take one really big trip this year – to Tokyo, where he was slated to hold forth at the 2020 Olympics. But that was scuttled and now he’s racing through lots of shorter excursions, several of them for events he was supposed to anchor weeks and months ago.
Tirico has held forth at the Indianapolis 500, originally scheduled for May, and called the fall opening game between Duke and Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He recently called the Kentucky Derby (it should have taken place May 2) remotely. On one recent Sunday, he traveled to a course in New York’s Westchester County for a round of U.S. Open golf before making his way up to NBC Sports headquarters in Stamford, Conn., so he could do his usual duties on the network’s “Football Night in America.

NBC’s perennially top-rated Sunday Night Football broadcasts will sound fairly normal this fall, executive producer Fred Gaudelli promised Thursday, but they will feature fewer crowd shots due to few if any fans attending games.
Gaudelli joined play-by-play voice Al Michaels, analyst Cris Collinsworth and sideline reporter Michele Tafoya for a media conference call ahead of next Thursday’s start to the 15th season of Snf. Discussion of Covid-19 adjustments outweighed any talk about Xs and Os, though Collinsworth pronounced himself ready for the ritual, however different it may be.
“I can’t remember a year when I’ve been more excited for football,” Collinsworth said. “To get something back to normal, to get anything back to normal. We all understand – there’s a lot going on in the world. … But first and foremost, we’re excited for football.

Football fans are about to get a bird’s-eye view of gridiron proceedings when they tune in to NBC.
The network plans to offer stunning overhead shots thanks to the use of a C360 camera that will be stationed on the bottom of the event’s SkyCam and can provide zoom-in shots of specific players as well as wide looks of plays along the sidelines or views of players on the line of scrimmage. The camera shoots in 8K and records in a 180-degree immersive field of view, and has already been used in NBC Sports’ Nascar broadcasts.
“You’re able to now really scan the entire field, but do it in an intimate way,” says Fred Gaudelli, executive producer of “Sunday Night Football,” in an interview. His team will even be able to freeze an overhead image, then zoom in on a player’s hands if possession becomes an issue,...

Post-rush hour, the drive from the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills to the Los Angeles Rams’ practice facility in Thousand Oaks, Calif. is a manageable 50 minutes. On Friday, Nov. 15, most of the core broadcast team for NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” — analyst Cris Collinsworth, sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, executive producer Fred Gaudelli, director Drew Esocoff and researcher Andy Freeland — make that trip together in a luxury van, departing the hotel shortly after 11 a.m. Laptops open, Collinsworth and Tafoya are prepping for the interviews they will do with players and Rams head coach Sean McVay after they spend more than an hour observing the team’s practice.
But they and the crew members are also talking about the news of the morning — the suspension that the NFL handed down to Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett for hitting the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mason Rudolph in the head with the quarterback’s own helmet.

Hannah Storm knows football fans have to take an extra step to listen to her and Andrea Kremer broadcast “Thursday Night Football.” “It is your choice,” she told viewers during last week’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals.
You won’t find the duo holding forth on Fox, which owns TV rights to the NFL’s Thursday-night showcase. To get to them, a sports aficionado must subscribe to Amazon Prime, then opt not only to stream each week’s contest, but also toggle the audio selection to “Storm-Kremer” rather than sticking with the default Fox feed.
The results can be astonishing. Where are the deep male tones of a team like Fox’s Joe Buck and Troy Aikman or NBC’s Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth? Never before in the history of NFL broadcasting has an all-female team called TV games. On other media outlets, female...

It’s official. Mike Tirico has been named the new studio host for NBC’s primetime Sunday pregame show Football Night in America. Tirico was reported to have been the leading candidate to succeed Dan Patrick, who told the New York Post in March that he turned down a new five-year contract to continue as host. “I didn’t want to do it and not love doing it,” Patrick said at the time. He had served as Football Night‘s studio host since 2008.
Tirico will work alongside Fnia analysts Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison, and NFL Insider Mike Florio, from Studio 1 at NBC Sports’ International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Ct.
For the past two seasons, Tirico co-hosted Fnia from the game site. That role now will be filled by Liam McHugh, who will be joined on site most weeks by the Sunday Night Football team of Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and Michele Tafoya.

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014
The 56th Grammy Awards drew about as big an audience as the 55th Grammys, with early ratings showing the prime-time portion of the show (which ran to 11:45 p.m. Et) in line with last year's numbers.
Also Sunday, NBC's Pro Bowl telecast was pretty much even with last year's despite the extra competition from the Grammys. "The Bachelor: Sean and Catherine's Wedding" didn't draw much of an audience for ABC, but it did improve significantly on a "Bachelorette" wedding special from December 2012.
CBS drew 25.9 million viewers and a 14.6 rating/22 share in households in primetime, beating the combined total of the other three networks. NBC (9.3 million, 5.4/8) came in second, although its numbers may rise with its live football broadcast. ABC (5.6 million, 3.7/6) took third, and Fox trailed with 3 million viewers and a 1.8/3.
