Special Features Announced and Cover Art Revealed for ‘Star Wars: The Complete Saga’ on Blu-ray [Updated]

4 May 2011 12:15 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1]Update: Cover art for the three sets have been added. Lucasfilm's impressive streak of disappointment continues today as they've officially announced [2] the special features for the September 12 Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga. The nine-disc set, which features all six movies in the series, actually has a number of reportedly brand new features including individual archive discs dedicated to each trilogy and several new feature length documentaries. Sounds great, right? Well, the set also contains a lot of material from previous releases and is missing several great features from those same releases. Finally - not that we were expecting anything else, but dare to dream - the upcoming box contains strictly the special editions of the original trilogy. Read the full press release and list of special features after the jump. Here's the full press release [3] about the set announced today, May 4, as in "May the 4th be with you. »

Star Wars Blu-ray Bonus Features, Cover Art and Lightsaber Logo

4 May 2011 11:25 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The big Star Wars Blu-ray reveal as part of "May The 4th Be With You" is day well underway with a press release confirming the September 16 release date in North America, announcing a September 12 release date in other territories, and providing a complete look at the bonus features that will span the 9-disc Complete Saga Blu-ray set.

LucasFilm had said in past interviews that the original unaltered cuts of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi would not be included in the Blu-ray sets. True to their word, all three original trilogy films are being presented on Blu-ray in their special edition incarnations. This leaves the door open for another Blu-ray set in the future with the original trilogy cuts intact, as if that should come as a surprise to anyone.

Announced: Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray

4 May 2011 8:15 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The Star Wars Saga makes its collective HD debut this September, in a nine-disc collection that would make a Sith Lord blush...

The fourth of May be with you! Or something. For those of us already bored with our Star Wars VHS and DVD boxed sets now gathering dust on a shelf somewhere, today saw Lucasfilm make a rather special announcement - Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray.

That this sextet of sci-fi is coming out in high-definition isn’t a particularly well-kept secret, but the host of extras present on the nine disc set perhaps is. Each feature will come on its own separate disc with twin audio commentaries, while a further three discs will come with a profusion of deleted and extended scenes, matte paintings and concept art, plus cast and crew interviews.

The ninth disc, meanwhile, will contain no fewer than eight Star Wars-flavoured documentaries. »

That's right folks, today is the official unofficial Star Wars holiday celebrated by fans the world over.  So if you hear people gladly shouting "May the 4th be with you," you'll understand why.  For several years now this has been celebrated and even Lucasfilm has gotten in on the fun over the years.  So imagine the delight when they've made a special announcement pertaining to the impending blu-ray releases on this day.

For the past few days the official Star Wars website has been running this picture (above) to tease fans that some announcement would be made on the 4th, about the blu-rays.  It seemed kind of odd, considering there wasn't much to announce, so everyone pretty much assumed it would be related to the special features (which no one had any concrete details on).

Lo and behold, that's exactly what we got.  While many are already bitching about the »

"Star Wars" Blu-ray Sets Announced

4 May 2011 6:58 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Whoops. For the last few days, Lucasfilm had a teaser site which indicated an announcement of the details of their upcoming Blu-ray sets for the "Star Wars" films would be hitting today at 6am Us-pst. The details were released, but the site obviously underestimated the interest factor for the sets as within a few minutes it crashed, the teaser site redirecting to foxmovies.com.

Still, before the announcement went tits-up, the key information was collected so lets get right to the important stuff. First, these are unsurprisingly only the special edition versions of the original saga so you'll get to see Greedo shoot first in high-def. The 2004 DVD box-set made further changes from the first 'Special Editions' in 1997 - best bet is the 2004 version is what will be used (though we won't know until the first reviews come in). All the films are in 1080p and with 6.1 DTS Surround Sound. »
