Wow — a good Audie Murphy movie. Clair Huffaker’s screenplay should take credit, as well as the workmanlike direction of former Hitchcock assistant Herbert Coleman. Even John Saxon comes off well, plus the film can boast good work from favorites Zohra Lampert and Vic Morrow, and fine support from Rodolfo Acosta, Royal Dano and Lee Van Cleef.

Voting is currently underway on the Sight & Sound poll for the greatest film ever made, which takes place every ten years, and is generally seen as one of the most definitive of such polls. And one film that's near-certain to place in the top ten, given that it's been there in every poll since 1982 (and placed second in 2002) is Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo." The film was relatively poorly received on release, and indeed, remained unseen for twenty years, one of the five films to which Hitchcock bought back the rights to leave to his daughter (the so-called Five Lost Hitchcocks, which also include "The Man Who Knew Too Much," "Rear Window," "Rope" and "The Trouble With Harry"). But since its re-release in 1984, the film has grown into the great director's most acclaimed masterpiece, and is now one of the most examined, deconstructed and written about films in the history of the medium.

You can never get too much Hitchcock, especially in October. Celebrating the spookiest month of the year wouldn't be complete without taking a look at some of the Master of Suspense's best works, and with Universal re-releasing a whole bunch of them on DVD as part of their ever-expanding Legacy Series most of these films have never looked or sounded better. Recently I was given three of the Hitch's best -- 1954's Rear Window, 1958's Vertigo and 1960's Psycho -- to take another look and it's doubtful fans will be disappointed. While the transfers themselves are no different than the ones found on the Special Editions released just a few years ago, the sound quality (on one) and the special features (on all three) have been decidedly improved. Let's take a bit closer look at each title separately: Rear Window Easily one of Hitchcock's most enduring (and most popular) titles,...
