Casting Bites: Chris Rock, Lauren Hutton, and More

10 November 2008 10:25 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you've seen Death at a Funeral, I'm sure you were thinking: Forget Ewen Bremner, Alan Tudyk, and the rest of them! I want an urbanized remake of Chris Rock! If you did, you should be overjoyed to learn that The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Rock is producing, starring, and co-writing (with Aeysha Carr) an "urban reworking" of the comedy. It's supposed to be "a hysterical, completely new reimagining" of the original, but while words like "hysterical" and "urban" are perfectly good for a film, I'm getting Guess Who twitches. But man, I'd love to be wrong.

Meanwhile, after taking an almost decade-long hiatus from the big screen, Variety reports that Lauren Hutton has signed on for David Duchovny's The Joneses, along with Glenne Headly and Gary Cole. The movie is just like you'd assume it to be -- what life is really like for "The Joneses" -- »

Review: Forever Strong

3 October 2008 8:41 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

I'm a big sucker for a rousing underdog sports film. Rocky, Rudy, Hoosiers, Invincible, etc. I love them all. Taking a cue from the likes of We Are Marshall, and Friday Night Lights, Forever Strong emerges as an earnest attempt at the underdog sports film, only here the choice sport is one very rarely . if ever - depicted in movies - Rugby.

In Forever Strong, Sean Faris is Rick Penning, a troubled but incredibly talented high school rugby player who plays more recklessly off the field than on. After landing himself in hot water, Rick is shipped off to a juvenile facility where he continues his troublesome ways. Before long, facility head Marcus Tate . played by Sean Astin . offers Rick an escape of sorts. He suggests that Rick play ball with longtime rival Highland Rugby. At first, the star player is reluctant, but then he finally agrees. Rick has a »

Quick Chat With Gary Cole

Although Gary Cole had a big shoot-'em-up summer playing a drug lord in Pineapple Express, you probably still know him best as Lumbergh, the droning, officious boss in Office Space.

His latest movie, Forever Strong, puts him in a more dramatic light. Cole plays real-life rugby coach Larry Gelwix, whose unconventional training and character building methods have proven successful for his Highland Rugby team for years.

We asked Cole whaaaat's happening (couldn't resist), and he gave us the scoop on his heartthrob male co-stars, his take on Office Space vs. Pineapple Express and his rivalry with Gary Coleman.

Forever Strong

Here's something you probably didn't know: Over the past six years, 37-year-old director Ryan Little has helmed six feature films. He's made a musical, a war movie, a Western, a horror film, and a romantic comedy; for his sixth film, he tackles an uplifting sports melodrama. In Forever Strong, Sean Faris plays the gifted but troubled son of hard-ass Arizona rugby coach Neal McDonough. When Faris gets busted for his second DUI, he's sent to a group home, where he meets Sean Astin, who speaks wistfully about inspiring, innovative rugby coach Gary Cole, a man who cares more about life lessons than wins. Reluctantly, Faris gets on board, and thrives under Cole's tutelage to such a degree that he eventually leads his new team to face his father's team in the state championship. Forever Strong isn't terrible, and Little has some talent as a director. DVD Review: Desperate Housewives - The Complete Fourth Season

14 September 2008 11:28 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

When "Desperate Housewives" first began in 2004 it was a unique little primetime soap opera that didn't feel quite so soapy. Credit that to the cast that included a few names we had heard of, the snappy writing and the overall quality of the production. The second season was a drastic decline and the third season was so-so. The fourth season could have possibly broken the show's audience and caused them to give-up if it didn't show any real potential of getting back to what made the first season so great and while it doesn't necessarily live up to what the first season started, it at least gives it a shot and makes each episode worth a little something. The fourth season begins as Lynette (Felicity Huffman) has cancer, Gabriel (Eva Longoria Parker) just got married to the mayor but is ready to run-off with her ex-husband Carlos (Ricardo Chavira), Bree »

Feature: Judd Apatow's David Gordon Green

By Matt Singer

Though critics may be divided over "Pineapple Express" . at the time of this writing, it weighs in at 57% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer . there is a consensus about at least one aspect of the Judd Apatow-produced stoner comedy: surprise over the choice of David Gordon Green as director. As Roger Ebert puts it in his positive review of the film, Green, "that poet of the cinema, is the last person you'd expect to find directing a male-buddy comedy about two potheads who start a drug war." Based on some of his own past comments, Green might be inclined to agree with him; when promoting his debut film "George Washington" a few years ago, Green told Charlie Rose, "I'm interested in any movie that's not like other movies. Growing up, I wasn't so much a 'Star Wars' or 'Raiders' kind of kid. I was a guy who'd watch 'Walkabout. »
