The Wonder Years (is finally) on DVD

7 October 2014 7:00 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

The Wonder Years

Cast: Fred Savage, Josh Saviano, Danica McKellar, Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, Daniel Stern, Jason Hervey

Due Out: October 7, 2014

Who’S It For? “The Wonder Years” is timeless. Thankfully it doesn’t feel dated simply because I was a child of the ’80s trying to understand life in the late ’60s. “The Wonder Years” was my gateway drug to a nostalgia I didn’t even know. Like many of you, I grew up with Kevin. I hoped for Winnie, I had friends like Paul (and probably was Paul more than I realized).

I can’t wait to show “The Wonder Years” to my son. I’ll have to wait, because he hasn’t even turned two yet, but now I have six episodes to show him, and hopefully that will just be the beginning.

TV Score: 10/10

'Goldbergs' brothers Adam and Barry rock out to Twisted Sister in new clip

7 October 2014 6:31 AM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

“We were the stuff of legends,” says Sean Giambrone as Adam Goldberg in the upcoming episode of The Goldbergs. “Well, in our minds.” This week on The Goldbergs, siblings Adam and Barry Goldberg start their own garage band in hopes of one day hitting it big and rocking out on stage while glitter cannons erupt in glorious '80s style. The episode—the third of the hit comedy’s second season—is directed by The Wonder Years star Fred Savage. Which seems oddly appropriate—not only did music by Joe Cocker, Joni Mitchell, and Paul Simon flavor the Americana bent of the '80s hit, »

The Wonder Years’’ long-awaited DVD set: 300 original songs included, 14 omitted Distributor Time Life was able to secure songs like the Joe Cocker intro “With A Little Help From My Friends" for the DVD release, which was held up for years due to song rights. But Time Life has released a list of the 14 songs it couldn’t get, including songs from The Doors, Blood, Sweat & Tears and Neil Young. However, 10 songs from Bob Dylan were secured, and it was thanks to him that other rights-holders came aboard. Plus: A limited edition DVD set autographed and shaped like a miniature school locker will sell for $500. “Gracepoint,” “A to Z” and “Bad Judge” debut to low numbers Meanwhile, “How to Get Away with Murder” hung on to much of its impressive debut audience. Counterculture and Hollywood Converge at Mill Valley Film Fest

30 September 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Part of the Mill Valley Film Festival’s charms is how it reflects both the local community’s roots and its forward-thinking spirit. Situated just beyond Sausalito as you cross the Golden Gate Bridge northbound from San Francisco, Mill Valley is many things to many people: part dot-com millionaire bedroom community, post-hippie enclave, Arcadia for Bay Area rock royalty and bucolic getaway in the midst of the redwoods.

And even though it doesn’t have the surprise factor of Telluride, or the market flurry of Toronto and Cannes, Mill Valley — like Santa Barbara later during awards season — has been increasingly favored by Hollywood, which looks at such desirable destinations relatively close to home as hassle-free platforms to showcase prestige product. That the festival, presented by the nonprofit California Film Institute and now in its 37th year, can boast of having screened five out the past six Oscar best picture winners »

Pulp: A Film About Life, Death And Supermarkets…Review

4 June 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Florian Habicht

Starring: Jarvis Cocker, Nick Banks, Candida Doyle, Steve Mackey, Mark Webber

Running Time: 90 minutes

Synopsis: Sheffield’s finest, Pulp return to their home city for a farewell gig in this documentary that explores both the band’s memories and the great affection they’re held in

Do you remember the first time? Let me take you back. It’s 1995 and clubs up and down the land are filled with girls wearing “I’m Common” T-shirts. The Daily Mirror is freaking out about CD single inlay sleeves (yes, people used to buy them) that promote drug use, and a Sheffield band headlines the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury at short notice, replacing The Stone Roses to a rapturous reception.

Often labelled as Britpop, in reality Pulp was so much more: sleazy-pop-disco-synth-rock, but with Jarvis Cocker’s confessional tales of urban mediocrity and sexual shame beguiling and romancing us. And »

Interview: Fred Savage on His Real Wonder Years

13 May 2014 3:00 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There are few TV shows associated with a song more than “The Wonder Years”. Joe Cocker’s raspy version of “With a Little Help From My Friends” immediately conjures up that family sitcom and especially the centerpiece lead child actor Fred Savage.

The grown-up Fred Savage is now one of TV’s hottest sitcom directors.

Last week, Savage was the featured guest for the kickoff of the CineYouth Film Festival, which is sponsored by Cinema/Chicago and the Chicago International Film Festival. The annual film showcase celebrates short-format features from filmmakers 21-years-old and younger. And who more appropriate to give a career retrospective than Fred Savage, who began as a child actor and has evolved into show business as a producer, director and occasional performer as an adult.

Recap: 'American Idol' Season 13 - Top 4 Performances - Love: Break-Ups & Make-Ups Night

7 May 2014 4:58 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Has Jessica Meuse seriously become our "American Idol" frontrunner?  After last week's "No" votes sent Sam Woolf home, both Jena Irene and Alex Preston had some fickle fans grumbling about their lack of solidarity. Then Caleb Johnson had to go and give an idiotic interview calling his Twitter kinda-fans "retards."  Sigh.  Jessica had the only clean week! Click through for some Love-themed recapping! 8:03 p.m. Et. The show begins with a brief recap of last week's drama.  8:03 p.m. I want Alex Preston to advance, because next week is Home Visits and I want him to return to the high school where I used to substitute teach. Jennifer Lopez is very pink for tonight's Jennifer Lopez Fashion Show. 8:05 p.m. Ryan is scruffy. And they're doing Three songs apiece tonight. 8:06 p.m. Yikes. That was some of the worst judge-and-host banter in "Idol" history, right down »

Leon Russell’s Road Less Traveled Ends in New Album ‘Life Journey’

Leon Russell made me a life-long fan when I heard Joe Cocker sing his song “Delta Lady” in 1969. Greatest TV Pilots: The Wonder Years

The Wonder Years, Season 1, Episode 1 “Pilot”

Directed by Steve Miner

Written by Neal Marlens and Carol Black

Aired January 31, 1988

The Wonder Years is a series built on and steeped in nostalgia: the first images we see and sounds we hear of the series are news footage of events from 1968, set to the The Byrds’ “Turn, Turn, Turn”. But The Wonder Years takes the idea of nostalgia even further: it’s not just a love letter to the Sixties in the suburbs, it is a look back at the trials and tribulations of adolescence, of the singular yet universal experience of being a child perched on the edge of adulthood. Thus, it is a show that appeals to more than just aging Boomers or Gen Xers who may have come of age at or around the same time as Kevin Arnold, the series’ main character – whatever decade it may have taken place, »

The Voice: First Night of Battle Rounds Includes Strategic Steals

18 March 2014 3:30 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

The first night of battle rounds on The Voice exposed one thing about the Season 6 coaches. They are quickly looking to be strategic and showed it with their steals. Blake Shelton went after an old-school soul singer with a trademark high kick, Biff Gore, a father of six, who lost his battle to soulful T.J. Wilkins on Team Usher. Shakira picked up a Joe Cocker-esque blues man, Patrick Thomson, who fell in a tight contest against Kat Perkins from Team Adam. And after Usher landed himself a baby-faced metal rocker in Stevie Jo, Adam Levine stole heartthrob Jake Barker. »

Finally! 'The Wonder Years' Complete Series Is Coming To DVD

We have some good news for fans of “The Wonder Years.” After years of waiting, the entire series will finally be available on DVD later this year. Thanks to StarVista Entertainment, we will all get to relive the adventures of Kevin Arnold as he grows up during the late ‘60s/early ‘70s. Even better news? Virtually every song that originally appeared in the show will be included as well. Getting the entire show on DVD, with the soundtrack mostly intact, was not an easy task as securing the rights has been the biggest and most expensive obstacle. The show featured some of the greatest music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, which include The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson, Joni Mitchell, and of course Joe Cocker, whose rendition of “WIth a Little Help from My Friends” opened every episode. For the longest time, it seemed we would never get to see the entire series on DVD, »

White Collar

Production on the sixth and likely final season of USA Network's "White Collar" has not begun as the network and production studio are reportedly disagreeing on the nature of the series conclusion.

The network reportedly wants a mini-series wrap up (ala "The Big C") while the studio would prefer a full final season. Ratings remain solid for the series, but the show is becoming too expensive to produce. [Source: TV guide]

The Oliviers

Ten Cent Adventures is developing the four-hour mini-series "The Oliviers," about the life and love of the iconic British actors Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh.

The story deals with the tempestuous relationship and twenty year marriage between Olivier and Leigh. A director has yet to be attached, while Tarquin Olivier will produce. [Source: Screen]

“The Wonder Years” Coming To DVD With Full Music: Our Favorite Episodes

Well, here’s some unexpected and tremendous news: The Wonder Years, the ’80s-’90s Fred Savage series about growing up in the ’60s-’70s, is coming to DVD in late 2014 featuring “virtually every song” from its immense soundtrack. That is quite a feat. The DVDs will include tracks from The Beatles, Van Morrison, Smokey Robinson, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell, and thank God, because this show is not the same without “The Circle Game” playing over footage of the Arnold family’s home movies. Netflix made the series available for viewing without any of the show’s big tunes (even the Joe Cocker opener of “With a Little Help from My Friends” was altered), so this is a particularly huge revelation.

I’ve always been shocked by how much this show resonates with me. It’s a show about an adolescent heterosexual everyman, but Kevin Arnold’s experiences still felt specific, »

The Wonder Years: The Complete Series Finally Coming to DVD with Original Soundtrack

12 February 2014 10:52 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Complete series sets of classic TV shows make for some great collectors items, but one particular TV show has thus far proved elusive for the home video market.  Due to the series’ extensive use of popular music, securing the rights to some very expensive songs has prevented The Wonder Years from coming to DVD.  However, the wait is now finally over, as StarVista Entertainment has announced that it will release The Wonder Years: The Complete Series on DVD sometime this year with its original soundtrack almost entirely intact.  The show ran on ABC from 1988-1993 and chronicled the life of young Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) as told in flashback form from 1968 to 1973. The show’s incredible soundtrack has made securing DVD rights an impossible expensive venture for many years, but StarVista has scored “virtually every song” from the series’ original soundtrack, including Joe Cocker’s opening rendition of “With »

20 Feet From Stardom | Blu-ray Review

11 February 2014 9:15 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

It’s not surprising that one of the best musically inclined docs of 2013 was pieced together by director Morgan Neville, a filmmaker who over the years has cinematically profiled the likes of Muddy Waters, Hank Williams, Brian Wilson, Ray Charles and so many others. Neville’s latest shows his vast knowledge of rock and roll mythology while highlighting his apt for storytelling economy, digging deep and moving nimbly between subjects yet rarely just glancing an anecdote. This time he’s chosen to unearth those overlooked by history, those whose voices enriched so many classic recordings with layers of youthful soul, yet went unheralded as solo artists, those who will be remembered for living just 20 Feet From Stardom. With expeditious style and an ear for the best mix of relevant tunes, Neville nods to the all important back up singers.

You may not know them by name, but you certainly know their voices. »
