There was a time not so very long ago when it appeared Ben Affleck would simply fade away to irrelevance as a string of poor decisions eroded his acting star power steadily away. And then it turned out he wasn't a half bad director. A pretty damn good one, actually, and now he's back in that chair once again with Argo.Based on true events, Warner Bros. 'Argo' Trailer Shows Off Ben Affleck's Latest

8 May 2012 11:19 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

In searching for a screen capture to use for the above image while skimming through this new trailer for Argo I came across the above moment. Referring to Argo as "from Ben Affleck the director The Town" was interesting to me. People know who Ben Affleck is and Affleck even stars in the film and is featured throughout the trailer, is the addition of "the director The Town" necessary and if so what does it add? Otherwise, this is a film I think we are all interested in seeing, if for no other reason than Affleck has shown to be a competent director and one I'd even argue did a much better job with Gone Baby Gone rather than The Town. As for Argo, it's based on true events, chronicling the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis--the truth of »

Ben Affleck's 70s Set Hostage Thriller Argo Gets a Trailer

8 May 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Warner Bros. has released a great trailer for Ben Affleck's new film Argo. The movie is based on a true story told in a Wired magazine article by Joshuah Bearman, called How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran. It tells the story of "how the CIA and the Canadian government teamed to rescue six U.S. diplomats who'd been taken hostage at the American embassy by a group of Iranians in 1979. The CIA's ruse involved the explanation that the six hostages were actually a Hollywood film crew scouting a movie titled "Argo," and using those fake identities, they were able to flee the country."

It looks like Affleck did a great job bringing this story to life, and I'm looking forward to seeing the film. It looks like it will be a fun yet intense political thriller.

First Trailer for Ben Affleck’s Argo

8 May 2012 8:17 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Wow. It’s done already? Or close enough that they were able to cut a trailer, anyway. Last I heard, they were just casting this thing, but apparently ever since he became a director, Ben Affleck has developed something of a Clint Eastwood style of filmmaking, because he sure got this thing done fast. Check out the first trailer for Affleck’s “Argo” (in which he also stars), due out later this year. Based on true events, Warner Bros. ‘Argo’ Trailer Is The Best Bad Idea Ben Affleck’s Had as a Director

8 May 2012 7:30 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Remember when Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Kerry Bishe, Kyle ChandlerRory Cochrane, and Tate Donovan all got together to make a movie about a fake movie being made in order to rescue hostages being held in Iran? This trailer is one more slice of proof that Affleck knows what the hell he’s doing behind a camera, especially when it comes to the slightly funny world of serious issues. Instead of crime-riddled Boston, this time it’s the Iranian Hostage Crisis, a fake script called Argo and a crazy attempt at rescuing 6 people. It’s Ocean’s Eleven except the stakes are real, and they’re life-or-death. Check out the trailer for yourself: Truly excellent work here. Hopefully the full film will live up to the tension, but all the pieces of the puzzle are in place. Source: The Film Stage »

Ben Affleck’s ‘Argo’ Trailer

8 May 2012 6:43 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Based on a real-life Iran hostage event, Argo marks the third directing effort from Ben Affleck after after Gone Baby Gone and The Town. Warner Bros. have released the first trailer for the drama today and will be attached to Dark Shadows this weekend. Guided by a fantastic ensemble cast, this is certainly one of my most-anticipated fall movies and this first footage delivers.

Affleck once again looks to mix top-notch drama with moments of brevity, here with the conceit of a fake film crew to rescue the hostages. It’s the kind of smart, adult-themed dramas we rarely get. Check it out below along with a poster for the film also starring Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Zeljko Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Kerry Bishe, Kyle ChandlerRory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber and Taylor Schilling.

The top 10 Keanu Reeves movies that aren’t The Matrix

2 May 2012 6:26 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Aside from Neo in The Matrix, what are Keanu Reeves’ finest roles? Here, Luke lists the ten other Reeves movies that deserve your attention...

Depending on your personal views on the man, Keanu Reeves is either the epitome of what can be achieved with determination, gumption and graft, or one lucky, lucky swine.

His detractors are always quick to pounce because, yes, he’s never boasted a particularly diverse dramatic range and, yes, he never really got his accents together, but he’s also managed to etch out a career whose breadth and length is the envy of hordes of actors with more ‘conventionally recognised’ acting chops. That’s not to say Reeves’ oeuvre (yes, oeuvre) doesn’t contain some profound old sod-plank – it most certainly does - yet said chunderguff has always been liberally counter-weighted by more than his fair share of cheeky little corkers.

So, before we examine »

Our 9 Favorite Movie Stoners

20 April 2012 8:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

The numbers 4-20 have tons of significance in both world history and American culture. It's Hitler's birthday and the date of the Columbine massacre, for starters.

But since those two are such buzzkills, we'll focus on what else the date means: high time for stoners everywhere.

Looking back at our favorite stoner films, we notice many actors portray potheads one-dimensionally: eyes glazed, dopey voice, etc. We love the following movie stoners because they're not only funny, but also multidimensional.

Okay, but mostly because they're funny.

9. Brad Pitt, 'True Romance' (1993)

Floyd is the ultimate slacker stoner. Pitt plays the character as being so high he barely forms words outside of mumbling, "Hey! Get some beer and some cleaning products." His scenes provide great comedic relief in an otherwise rough and violent movie.

We relate because we've had nightmarishly lazy roommates like Floyd. The scenes are twice as funny now in hindsight, »

25 Potential 2013 Best Picture Oscar Contenders

5 March 2012 10:16 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Update: I've already realized I forgot to add Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly and John Hillcoat's The Wettest County to this list. That would make 27. I haven't yet gotten around to cleaning up "The Contenders" section of the site just yet and while some may argue it's too early to look toward the 2013 Oscars considering we just closed the book on the 2012 Oscar ceremony I have to kindly disagree. If for no other reason, looking at films that might be vying for Best Picture next year we get to sort through a bunch of films that may end up being considered the year's best. What's wrong with that? Granted, as is often the case when looking this far into the future, several of these films may end up being duds. Some may not actually hit theaters in 2012 (though most do have established release dates) and others just might »

Behold! The second new exciting still from Ben Affleck's "Argo." Based on a Blacklist-favored script by Chris Terrio, "Argo" tells the true story of how the CIA, with help from Hollywood, used a fake movie project to smuggle hostages out of Tehran during the 1979 hostage crisis. "Argo" boasts a stellar cast of great character actors including Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kerry Bishe, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, Zeljko Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks and Taylor Schilling. New Still From Argo Has Ben Affleck Leading A Meeting

30 January 2012 2:10 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We've commented on it multiple times here on Cinema Blend, but it's still amazing how Ben Affleck has managed to turn his career around. After making a series of truly awful box office bombs, the man reinvented himself as a director and has since made two Oscar nominated films in Gone Baby Gone and The Town. As a result, Argo, Affleck's third effort, is very high on our "Anticipated in 2012" list, but it's not just because of who is behind the camera. The actor turned filmmaker has brought together an outrageously amazing cast that includes himself, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Kyle Chandler, , Rory Cochrane, Titus Welliver, Clea DuVall, Michael Parks, Richard Kind and many, many others. We've already gotten our first look at Affleck in the film, rocking a heavy beard and looking through some files, but now Warner Bros. has released a new still from the »

Warner Bros have released a second still image from Ben Affleck’s third directorial effort Argo, the Middle East thriller that is set for release on September 14th. At least we think it’s a new image from the film and not just Affleck going through some sort of script read on set as the image could suggest!

Set around the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, the movie has its origins from a true story article titled “How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran” by Joshuah Bearman and stars Ben Affleck in the leading role doing double writer/starring duty as he did on his last thriller The Town.
