ABC’s General Hospital leads the way with 23 nominations for Daytime Emmy Awards.

The television academy announced Wednesday that the venerable soap opera will compete with NBC’s Days of Our Lives, CBS’ The Young and the Restless and the canceled All My Children of ABC for best daytime drama. NBC’s The Bold and the Beautiful has won the trophy three years in a row but wasn’t nominated this year.

Other repeat winners are possible, though: Ben Bailey of Cash Cab was nominated for best game show host and Dr. Mehmet Oz as best talk show host.

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey Review

29 April 2012 9:44 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Constance Marks

Cast: Kevin Clash, Whoopi Goldberg, Frank Oz

Running time: 80 minutes

Certificate: U

Synopsis: Meet Kevin Clash, one of the world’s most popular but unrecognisable stars. For 25 years, he has played a character named Elmo on the most popular street in children’s TV…

Five years ago, who’d have known Jim Henson’s Muppets would return to win our hearts once again? With their big screen outing earlier this year, Kermit and Co proved they still have what it takes to make us laugh and go all gooey inside. The trick, of course, is the simple Muppets formula: they are never spiteful or mean-spirited. It’s pure, decent, and honest fun – great gags and lovable characters. It’s a refreshing change in an increasingly cynical world, and its little wonder fans worldwide have embraced them all over again. Long live the Muppets.

Being Elmo – review

28 April 2012 4:03 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Movie puppeteers are a rather sinister bunch, among them the obsessed Michael Redgrave in Dead of Night, the repressed Mel Ferrer in Lili and the disturbed John Cusack in Being John Malkovich. But there is nothing but sweetness and light surrounding Kevin Clash, the first African-American to enter that great fraternity of American puppeteers associated with Frank Oz and Jim Henson. He began building his own puppets as a child in Baltimore under the encouraging aegis of loving working-class parents after watching TV shows in the 1960s, and after a serious apprenticeship was inducted into Sesame Street where he created the famous red-haired, pop-eyed, orange-nosed Elmo. He's now Sesame Street's senior puppet coordinator and muppet captain. Constance Marks's delightful, unpretentious documentary both captures the man in all his complex simplicity and throws light on his craft.

This week's new films

27 April 2012 4:07 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Damsels In Distress (12A)

(Whit Stillman, 2011, Us) Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Adam Brody, Ryan Metcalf, Megalyn Echikunwoke. 99 mins

Stillman casts a wry eye across the college campus, and settles on Gerwig's clique of preppy girls who confuse charity with condescension. The result is distinctively articulate, witty, gently surreal and hilariously sarcastic. But as well as parodying these misguided teens, Stillman clearly has great sympathy for them. It's good to have him back.

Avengers Assemble (12A)

(Joss Whedon, 2012, Us) Samuel L Jackson, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson. 142 mins

Considering the lack of leeway Whedon had with this superhero juggernaut, he pulls off a remarkable feat, keeping all the plates spinning with as much irony as he can get away with. It descends into a numbing effects orgy, but it's fast and fun along the way.

Albert Nobbs (15)

(Rodrigo García, 2011, UK/Ire) Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska. 113 mins

Exclusive Clip from Being Elmo

27 April 2012 8:20 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Constance Marks’ film is not simply a documentary about a man and his puppet. Being Elmo fixes its sights on Kevin Clash, the performer who has been a key figure behind the scenes of Sesame Street and is personally responsible for bringing one of the most recognisable of Jim Henson’s creations to life.

It’s an inspiring story of a man who followed his dream and Clash (and Elmo) emerge as fascinating characters, the film is playing in UK cinemas as from today and we have a brief clip from the film which gives an idea of the power, responsiblity and enjoyment Clash has.

Here’s the clip, catch the film as soon as you can – check here to find out where it’s playing near you.

The Hey U Guys UK Cinema Release Round-up: 27th April

27 April 2012 7:30 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Another busy weeks of cinema releases this week but despite the wide array of movie offerings, there’s clearly one fantastical, latex-clad, cross-over blockbuster which towers above all the others. I am of course referring, to Strippers Vs Werewolves.

Apparently there’s some small, niche movie about a bunch of crazy vigilantes who gang up to fight with one of their mentally disturbed brothers, but I doubt you’ve heard of it.

No, but seriously folks, stitch your sides back together and i’ll level with you, The Avengers Assemble is out this Friday and after the months of trailers, stills, clips and more trailers, the anticipation is as they say at fever pitch. I imagine many of us have tickets booked up for the opening weekend already and after near unanimously positive reviews in the press, expectations are sky high.

As one might expect, few studios have bothered putting »

Being Elmo – review

If you're looking for a tale of a dysfunctional puppet-handler, Constance Marks's inspiring look at a Sesame Street icon isn't it

With the Muppets melting hearts all over again on the big screen, it is a nice moment for this sweet-natured documentary about Kevin Clash, the puppeteer regarded as dauphin to the late Jim Henson; Clash is the man who created the much-loved Elmo character on Sesame Street, a wacky figure whose celeb importance is such that he is described here as the Brad Pitt for five-year-olds. The movie takes us through Clash's tough childhood in Baltimore, his early interest in puppetry, and the liberating experience of seeing the TV show Sesame Street with its inspired repudiation of racism. Director Constance Marks shows how Clash developed Henson's characterisation techniques, with the puppets' distinctive ruminative "nodding" style, making them appear to be thinking and reacting without needing to speak. Close up: Back in the Hobbit

Catch up with the last seven days in the world of film

The big story

Is there any more eagerly anticipated film that The Hobbit? If so, this week go down as a bit of a downer in the blockbuster annals, for footage unveiled at CinemaCon - a starry jamboree in Vegas for multiplex owners - has been found slightly lacking. Ten minutes shot in the hot potato 48 frames-per-second format (for which Peter Jackson cheerleads) left some punters unconvinced.

"It reminds me of when I first saw Blu-Ray, in that it takes away that warm feeling of film," one chain owner said. "It looked to me like a behind-the-scenes featurette."

"It looked like a made-for-tv movie," another projectionist told the La Times. "It was too accurate – too clear. The contrast ratio isn't there yet – everything looked either too bright or black."

Some good pointers there for Jackson, who still »

Being Elmo review

26 April 2012 3:54 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The life and times of puppeteer Kevin Clash are brought to the screen in Being Elmo. Here's Michael's review of a charming documentary...

Thanks to the success of the recent Muppets revival flick - a sequel to which has just been cheekily announced by Disney - interest in the work of Jim Henson is higher than any other time in recent memory.

With that in mind, has there ever been a riper moment for a documentary that looks into ‘the soul of a puppeteer’? In a stroke of serendipitous movie magic, this week we are treated to the release Being Elmo, a biographical documentary about Sesame Street puppeteer Kevin Clash. The timing couldn’t be better, and, what’s more, the film isn’t half bad either.

Across a trim 80 minutes, director Constance Marks traverses not only Clash’s personal story, but also a detailed profile of the Elmo character itself. »

Film Review: 'Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey'

25 April 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★☆☆ You'd be hard-pushed to find a more heart-warming documentary this year than Constance Marks' Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey (2011), which charts the rise of devoted Elmo handler Kevin Clash from his humble beginnings in Baltimore to his tragically short working relationship and friendship with the late, great Jim Henson. What shines through is Clash's dedication to the worthy cause of puppetry, despite its detrimental effect on the relationship between himself and his maturing daughter.

Marley (15)

(Kevin Macdonald, 2012, Us/UK) 145 mins

Authoritative to the point of exhausting, Macdonald's documentary compiles an awesome amount of footage, photos, interviews, etc – but then it's a big subject. Whether you really get to the man beyond the legend is debatable (this was made with Marley family backing), but there's much here you've never seen, from Bob's Rasta roots to his kick-around in London's Battersea Park.

Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (12A)

(Lasse Hallström, 2012, UK) Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt. 106 mins

An incongruous setting for a mushy fish-out-of-water romcom, with Blunt and her sheikh boss lured by McGregor's tackle.

Elles (18)

(Malgorzata Szumowska, 2011, Fra/Pol/Ger) Juliette Binoche, Anaïs Demoustier. 99 mins

Empowerment and eroticism mix uneasily when Binoche's enquiries into student prostitution affect her own life.

Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy (18)

(Rob Heydon, 2011, Can) Adam Sinclair, Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd. 99 mins

Watch It: 'Cabin In The Woods,' Guy Pearce, 'Titanic'

11 April 2012 8:35 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"Cabin in the Woods" is out this weekend. That's probably all we're allowed to say about that. Well, one more thing: go see it, it's awesome. Okay, fine, we'll talk a little bit more about the Joss Whedon-produced horror flick in today's edition of Watch It, but that's not the only movie on our minds.

With "Lockout" coming out this week, one member of the MTV Movies team dove back into another Guy Pearce classic as his pick of the week. And somehow, someway, another of our writers never got around to seeing "Titanic" until last weekend's 3-D rerelease. Madness, we say! His take on James Cameron's historical-fiction epic is past the break, along with our other picks.

Ryan Rigley, MTV News contributor

I saw “Titanic” for the first time ever this weekend. It was good, as I’m sure everyone is well aware of by now. My »

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey

5 April 2012 2:30 PM, PDT | GreenCine | See recent GreenCine news »

Reviewer: Jeffrey M Anderson

Ratings (out of five): *** 1/2

Constance Marks' documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey tells the story of a shy black kid, growing up poor in Baltimore. Kevin Clash has a dream, but it has nothing to do with sports or hip-hop music. Rather, he wants to be a puppeteer on "Sesame Street."

This is a great twist for a movie, but Being Elmo does not dwell on it. In fact, it hardly brings up Clash's skin color at all, and it only brings up his former poverty in terms of the obstacles he overcame. For example, in order to meet puppet designer Kermit Love, he had to wait for a school trip to New York; his family couldn't afford train fare otherwise. (What the movie does not explain is why there was a camera present and footage of this first meeting.) »

Welcome back to This Week In DVD! It’s a fairly calm release week, but there are a few recognizable titles hitting shelves including Steven Spielberg’s cheesy War Horse and the universally acclaimed film about a man famous for sticking his hand inside a felt anus, Being Elmo. Lesser known releases include a couple Cartoon Network shows, Bob Newhart’s unfortunate TV swan song, two European imports worth your time and more. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it.
