- Performed his song "Yesterday When I Was Young" at Mickey Mantle's funeral (1995).
- He was reportedly the highest paid country concert star between 1969 and 1971. In 1973, he was awarded "Entertainer of the Year" by the Country Music Association. In 1951 and 1952, he was the winner of the U.S. National Banjo championships.
- Had a string of hits from the early 1960s to the early 1980s, most notably "Come Live With Me" (No. 1 on Billboard magazine's country singles chart in 1973) and "Yesterday When I Was Young" (a Billboard top 10 country hit in 1969).

- On August 22, 1987, he became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. He played an annual benefit concert at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, the proceeds of which went to fund scholarships for aspiring musicians.

- He also played "Lili Marlene" for Capitol Records SM-2425 in Hollywood, California.
- Inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame (2007), the Country Music Hall of Fame (2009), and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (2011).
- On April 12, 2011, he was honored by the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
- Passed away from complications from pneumonia at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
