Writer Claims ‘Get Hard’ Ripped Off His ‘Prison 101’ Idea

Writer Claims ‘Get Hard’ Ripped Off His ‘Prison 101’ Idea
A writer has filed suit against Codeblack Enterprises, alleging that the Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart comedy “Get Hard” was based on his idea.

Victor Dean says that in 2009, he wrote a treatment for “Prison 101,” which features a securities broker who has to learn how to survive prison from a “streetwise individual.” Dean says he pitched the idea to Codeblack, a division of Lionsgate that has worked closely with Hart. Dean alleges that he suggested that Hart and Ferrell could co-star. In 2012, Dean turned the idea into a four-episode web series.

Ferrell and Adam McKay subsequently developed “Get Hard” at Warner Bros., and Hart was brought in to co-star in the project.

The suit alleges that Codeblack “allowed McKay access to Prison 101 at the Codeblack offices by acts including… telling McKay about the ideas and storylines in ‘Prison 101’ and/or showing McKay Plaintiff’s YouTube videos.”

Jeff Clanagan, CEO of Codeblack, has been said

'All Eyez on Me's' Success Bodes Well for Other Tupac Projects

'All Eyez on Me's' Success Bodes Well for Other Tupac Projects
All Eyez on Me's surprise $26.4 million opening, all eyes should be on the savvy deal that put distributor Lionsgate in the black two days after the film's June 16 release and the onslaught of Tupac Shakur projects on the horizon.

In January, Lionsgate picked up the film in a prints-and-advertising deal backstopped by producer Morgan Creek. Any opening in the mid- to high-teen millions would have made it profitable for Lionsgate, according to sources.

Jeff Clanagan, president of Codeblack, the urban-focused Lionsgate division that released All Eyez, says social media was key to the film's marketing strategy:...

‘All Eyez on Me’: With a Strong Box Office Debut, Another Diverse Film Gets Underestimated

‘All Eyez on Me’: With a Strong Box Office Debut, Another Diverse Film Gets Underestimated
When “Straight Outta Compton” opened in August of 2015 to over $60 million — about $20 million more than most trades predicted — a conversation sparked about the industry’s failure to properly track movies that target people of color.

“You can’t track black,” Jeff Clanagan, CEO of CodeBlack Entertainment said in a 2015 Variety report.

Almost two years later, it seems not much has changed.

All Eyez on Me,” a biopic of Tupac Shakur from Lionsgate and Summit, is expected to earn just over $27 million in its opening weekend. That’s above most estimates, which had it in the $17 million to $22 million range earlier in the week, but below the $30 million it was projected to score as recently as Saturday. “All Eyez on Me” won’t break any box office records, but for a movie with a $45 million budget, that’s a solid opening. What’s more noteworthy, though, is just how “unpredictable” it has been.

You Can’t Track Black: How Box Office Predictions Fail Diverse Movies

You Can’t Track Black: How Box Office Predictions Fail Diverse Movies
Films with African-American leads topped box office charts for five consecutive weeks in August and September, yet with every “Straight Outta Compton” or “War Room,” Hollywood continues to act stunned by the power of black audiences.

Analysts and distribution executives have been wildly inaccurate when predicting the opening-weekend results of these films. “Straight Outta Compton’s” $60.2 million debut was roughly $20 million more than most trade publications had predicted. “War Room,” a faith-based drama about the power of prayer, more than doubled predictions with its $11.3 million launch. And last weekend’s champ, Sony’s “The Perfect Guy,” exceeded expectations by nearly $15 million when it kicked off with $29.4 million. In each case, black audiences made up between 36% and 60% of the opening weekend crowd. Perhaps it’s time to retire the shock-and-awe charade.

The breadth and influence of African-American moviegoers is apparent on both the big and small screen. Appealing to the demographic

Codeblack Films Signs South Africa Output Deal (Exclusive)

Codeblack Films has signed its first foreign output deal, a pact with Times Media Films to distribute its movies in South Africa. As part of the agreement, the company’s hit erotic drama “Addicted” will premiere in the African country next February.

It’s a sign that Codeblack, a company that has been wholly focused on the domestic marketplace, is beginning to look for opportunities abroad. The division of Lionsgate focuses on creating lower-budget films that target African-American audiences, such as “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete” with Jennifer Hudson and the stand-up comedy film “Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain.”

Times Media is one of South Africa’s largest distributors, controlling nearly 50% of the exhibition market, and has deals with other major studios such as Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox.

Codeblack’s titles have been cost effective to produce because the audience for its films was thought to be virtually non-existent overseas.
