Tony Gilroy reworking Methuselah for Warner Bros.

Deadline is reporting that Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, The Bourne Legacy) is in talks with Warner Bros. to write and potentially direct the studio’s long-gestating thriller Methuselah, which is being produced by David Heyman (Harry Potter).

The project was originally set up by James Watkins and recently had Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales co-direct Joachim Ronning attached, with Tom Cruise set to star. However, Ronning is now off the project, and is instead prepping an adaptation of Michael Crichton’s final novel Micro.

Gilroy is said to have a take that overhauls the project, although it will retain the central concept of a man who has survived for 400 years without physically ageing, and has accumulated vast intellectual knowledge and survival skills. Gilroy will soon be pitching his vision to Warner Bros., and is in line to direct should the script meet with approval.

Review: "McQ" (1974) Starring John Wayne; Warner Home Video Blu-ray Release

  • CinemaRetro
By Lee Pfeiffer

By 1974 John Wayne was in the twilight of his long, distinguished film career that had spanned six decades. Although the genre that we associate him most with, the Western, was still in vogue, the trend among audience preferences had clearly shifted to urban crime dramas. Surprisingly, Wayne had never played a cop or detective - unless you want to count his role in the lamentable "Big Jim McLain", a 1952 Warner Brothers propaganda film that served as a love letter to Sen. Joseph McCarthy. In that turkey, Wayne played an investigator for Huac, the House UnAmerican Activities Committee that served as McCarthy's private police force, presumably searching out commie infiltrators. All they ended up doing was ruining the lives of left-wing people in the arts and academia. Wayne, for his part, remained unapologetic for his support of Huac even after McCarthy's popularity plummeted and he ended his career in shame and disgrace.

TV Review: HBO’s ‘A Good Job: Stories of the Fdny,’ NatGeo’s ‘9/10: The Final Hours’

TV Review: HBO’s ‘A Good Job: Stories of the Fdny,’ NatGeo’s ‘9/10: The Final Hours’
The annual parade of Sept. 11 anniversary specials has been such that networks have been forced to become increasingly creative to turn up fresh angles. Two airing in close proximity reflect this challenge, with “A Good Job: Stories of the Fdny,” representing a much more peripheral take, yet proving both deeply personal and affecting; and “9/10: The Final Hours” feeling like a considerable stretch — an interesting idea that’s simply too diffused to rein in. If there’s one to watch, it’s the former, produced by and featuring former firefighter-turned-actor Steve Buscemi.

To those unfamiliar with that part of Buscemi’s biography, he spent four years as a fireman, and shares an obvious rapport with those who serve. In candid, low-key interviews that vaguely resemble James Gandolfini’s “Alive Day Memories’ ” chats with Iraq war veterans, Buscemi elicits a wide range of anecdotes about everything from integrating the Spartan ranks of firefighters (first with African-Americans,
