Boos! & Whoop-doos!: A Decade of Glossy Schlock!

31 December 2009 1:23 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The Drive-In? Whoop-doo!Boos! & Whoop-doos!: A Decade of Glossy Schlock! The Aughts ushered in a new era of glossy schlock that rose quietly from the ashes of the once burgeoning Drive-In scene. The Drive-In Theater has always stood as a temple for exploitive, low-grade cinema. But by 1999, even the most popular of these late night playgrounds had crumbled to dust. By the time this decade kicked off to shouts of "Y2K", they had all been wiped clean off the face of the Cineplex landscape. But their aura and mystic still lingered around many a DVD shelf like a ploom of stink bomb smoke. If there's one lasting remnant the Drive-In era gave us, it's the Z-grade flick. Fango caught up with fave actor Bill Moseley at the recent Rock and Shock convention in Worcester, Ma, where he talked up his role as Mayor Buckman (as seen in the exclusive pic below) in Tim Sullivan’s 2001 Maniacs: Field Of Screams. Moseley took over for Robert Englund, who portrayed Buckman in the previous Maniacs, “and those are very big shoes to fill,” he tells us.

“My Buckman isn’t as debonair as Robert’s,” Moseley continues. “His has a certain suavity that mine lacks. Mine is just a little more rough-and-tumble, and mean and vicious.”

In the sequel, which we last reported on here, Buckman leads the bloodthirsty residents of Pleasant Valley, Ga to slaughter a bunch of reality-tv people who seek to exploit them. “We shot it this summer in Iowa right on the banks of the Missouri River,” says Moseley, pictured with Ryan Fleming and Sullivan. “We »

NBC's new Parenthood series is a new take on Ron Howard's 1989 light-hearted drama. It revolves around four adult siblings and their parents and the pilot stars Peter Krause, Maura Tierney, Erika Christensen, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia, and Craig T. Nelson.

The show was supposed to debut in September but a couple months ago, it was reported that production on Parenthood was being delayed. Tierney was diagnosed with breast cancer and a decision was made to wait while she recuperated from surgery. A month ago, Tierney dropped out of the project completely because she needs ongoing treatments.

That news sent casting directors scrambling to find a suitable replacement for the pivotal role. Mad About You's Helen Hunt was initially approached for the part but ultimately a deal couldn't be made with Academy Award-winning actress.

Lauren Graham pinch hits in "Parenthood"

12 October 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Welcome back to my TV, finally, Lorelai! Ok, fine, so she won’t be playing Lorelai Gilmore. But Lauren Graham is coming back to TV as the replacement for Maura Tierney in the upcoming NBC series Parenthood.

Lauren finalized a deal on Friday to take over for Maura, who left the production to undergo treatment for breast cancer. Helen Hunt has been in talks to take over the part earlier, but they fell through. So Lauren stepped into the role of Sarah, a single mom raising two teens who moves back with her parents in Berkeley.

This is Lauren’s first return to TV since Gilmore Girls ended in 2007 after seven seasons. Her previous comeback attempt in a sitcom playing a self-help guru, was never picked up. She joins a large ensemble cast in the hour-long family dramedy that includes Six Feet Under alum Peter Krause, Coach star Craig T. Nelson, »

Stars and Couples Retreat to the Red Carpet For La Premiere

6 October 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

The stars of Couples Retreat descended on the red carpet in La last night to promote the ensemble comedy. Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman showed off their legs in short and sweet dresses, but the ladies were minus one since Kristin Davis is back east working on SATC2. It wasn't all about the women, however, as Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn hammed it up for the cameras. Dax Shepard was there to support his girlfriend Kristen and the group all laughed it up during the afterparty. If their friendly demeanor offscreen is any indication, we're in for a hilarious ride when the film hits theaters on Friday. View 55 Photos › To see more of the cast, just read more. Friday’s more-than-solid premiere of Law & Order tells us one of two things: either creator Dick Wolf is right, and the show has 20 more years of cops and courts left in it, or they’re setting up one hell of a series-ending season. We all know (mainly because Wolf’s been telling anyone who’ll listen for just about forever now) that tying Gunsmoke’s two-decade record was a major goal. With Friday’s premiere he sets about realizing that goal for this 20th season. And after a series of bumpy transitions among the police and prosecutor ranks (I still »
