'Why Trump?' Top Gop Ad Man Launches Campaign Urging Voters to Rethink the Republican Nominee

"Macho man," "world-class dealmaker" and "conservative" are just a few words supporters have used to describe Donald Trump. But a political ad guru who has created TV campaign spots for Mitt Romney, George H.W. Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger, just launched a new batch of ads that aims to prove the billionaire businessman is actually none of the above. Bob Gardner's new "Why Trump" campaign, now up on YouTube, urges Gop voters backing Trump to reconsider their support for the real estate mogul, who Gardner believes is damaging to the Republican party. Tribeca Film Review: ‘Shadow World’

30 April 2016 3:22 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Johan Grimonprez doesn’t want audiences to get out their handkerchiefs; he wants them to get out their protest signs, their megaphones and their voting ballots. Whether documentaries have that ability is sadly open for debate, but “Shadow World,” Grimonprez’s superb, gut-punching exploration of the global arms trade is the sort of catalyst to energize politically-minded viewers. Flawlessly juggling an impressive array of talking heads with archival footage, the director (“Double Take”) aims his disgust at politicos, from Reagan to Obama, Blair to Prince Bandar bin Sultan, and the billions invested in ensuring militarization and war never get put on ice. Smart, hard-hitting and possibly too intellectual for many, “Shadow World” deserves wide exposure at home and abroad.

Grimonprez bases his research on Andrew Feinstein’s 2011 book “The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade,” bringing the South African author in as co-writer and talking head. Bookending the »

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie review: sucker punch

28 March 2016 2:31 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Like a movie from the world of Watchmen: cold, cruel, borderline incoherent in its testosterone-fueled rage, misogynist, paternalistic… fascist, even. I’m “biast” (pro): didn’t hate Man of Steel

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

I really liked Man of Steel, Zack Snyder’s 2013 reboot of Superman: I liked how it gave him soul and tragedy and inner conflict like we had never quite seen before in the character. (At least onscreen. I cannot claim to have in-depth knowledge of the character’s long and varied history in print.) The son of Krypton we saw there didn’t enjoy the powers he possessed, and he hesitated to wield them. If it seemed as if he went overboard in the end, finally acquiescing to use his strength and abilities to fight Zod — laying waste to much of Metropolis in »

Ranking the Batman Movies From Worst to Best

24 March 2016 6:04 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It’s absurd to suggest that film critics were paid to write negative reviews of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” But as absurd ideas go, it’s a mildly flattering one, since it carries with it a sliver of implication that critics actually matter — or that a studio would give a bat’s ass what critics think of a movie as thoroughly, obtusely critic-proof as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” (I keep typing “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in hopes that the overextended title may improve with repetition, but it doesn’t — instead it just sits there, heavy with meaningless portent and bereft of punctuation: “Who stole my period?”)

Did I mention that, unlike roughly 69% of the critics listed on Rotten Tomatoes who reviewed “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” I did not hate “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”? Well, I didn’t — and no, Warner Bros. »

Megyn Kelly to Host Primetime Special on Fox Broadcasting

15 March 2016 11:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Megyn Kelly will, for at least an hour, jump from Fox News Channel to Fox prime time.

The Fox News anchor, whose stature has grown during the most recent election cycle as she has tangled with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, will host a one-hour prime-time special on Fox Broadcasting.

Bill Geddie, who helped lead ABC’s “The View” for 17 years alongside creator Barbara Walters, will serve as executive producer. The program will be produced by his company May Avenue Productions.

During the one-hour special Kelly will interview celebrities from the worlds of politics, entertainment and other areas of human interest. She will also discuss the year she has had covering the 2016 presidential campaign.

The special has been in the works for some time. Roger Ailes, chairman and chief executive, disclosed last June that executives were contemplating a series of prime-time specials for Kelly, whose Fox News Channel program “The Kelly File »

[Review] 10 Cloverfield Lane

10 March 2016 12:47 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Forget the Cloverfield connection. The actors who were in this film didn’t even know what the title was until moments before the first trailer dropped. Producer J.J. Abrams used that branding as part of the wrapping for its promotional mystery box, but the movie stands perfectly alone from 2008’s found-footage monster picture. Hell, 10 Cloverfield Lane perhaps doesn’t even take place within the same fictional universe as that film — although a friend asked if it’s secretly a Super 8 sequel, and, honestly, you could think of it as one without contradicting anything in either movie. Whether the Cloverfield name fills you with wariness or enthusiasm, it would be unwise to burden Dan Trachtenberg‘s film with such prejudices.

But there is a strong thematic thread to string between Cloverfield and this “spiritual successor.” Both are overt 9/11 stories — the former about living through the event and the latter about living in its aftermath. »
