He started acting in commercials when he was 11, along with a bit of modelling work. He left show business after high school, moving out of Los Angeles and for a time fought fires with the forestry service.

He is now a computer software analyst/designer for oil and mining companies. He enjoys climbing mountains and lives outside of Seattle, Washington.

Earned a geology degree from UC Santa Barbara and a master's degree from the University of Alabama.

Born on the same day as Darleen Carr, sister of Charmian Carr, his co-star on The Sound of Music (1965).

Duane's "Sound of Music" character Kurt was based on family singing member Werner von Trapp (1915-2007), the second eldest son of Georg Ritter von Trapp and first wife Agathe. He became part of the Trapp Family Singers in the mid-1930s with his father and stepmother Maria. Werner sang tenor with the group and played many instruments.
