Island Life: Revisiting ‘Lilo & Stitch’ After ‘Moana’

17 March 2017 4:52 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

‘Lilo & Stitch’ deserves better.

Lilo & Stitch is the “Barb” of Disney movies. Yes, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet exist. However, neither of those films have seen as much success and then sunk back into Disney-relative obscurity quite like Lilo & Stitch. The film was a full-fledged franchise in its heyday spawning multiple television series, two direct-to-video sequels, a Kingdom Hearts cameo, and its own video game. To be fair, Disney did have a reference to Lilo & Stitch in Moana — early on, Moana helps a baby turtle make its way into the ocean by obscuring it from birds under a palm frond. A solid “save the cat” moment that creates a presumption of goodness and a sly reference to Lilo & Stitch. Stitch, in a post-credit image, is seen shadowing a turtle and its child in the same way. It’s a fun little throwback to Disney’s first foray into depicting Polynesian culture.

Why Didn't Naomi Watts Return in Rings?

2 February 2017 3:30 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When Paramount started moving forward with Rings in early 2015, there was talk that this project was actually a prequel to the 2002 hit thriller The Ring, which starred Naomi Watts as Rachel Keller, Martin Henderson as Noah Clay and Daveigh Chase as the iconic Samara Morgan. When shooting began just a few weeks later, director F. Javier Gutierrez confirmed that this story is actually a sequel, although none of the original cast members were brought back for this follow-up. F. Javier Gutierrez revealed in a new interview that he had actually considering bringing back Naomi Watts as Rachel Keller, but the reason it never happened may surprise you.

The Ring, which was based on the hit Japanese thriller Ringu, was a big hit at the box office, taking in $129.1 million domestically and $249.3 million worldwide from a $48 million budget. The 2005 sequel, The Ring Two, wasn't quite as successful, earning $76.2 million domestic and »

Donnie Darko 3 Planned with Original Director Richard Kelly

26 January 2017 9:05 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Will we finally get Donnie Darko 3, a true sequel to the Jake Gyllenhaal sci-fi classic? Last year, the 2001 thriller Donnie Darko celebrated its 15th Anniversary with a 4K re-release in select U.K. theaters, although it never made it to the U.S. Now that the re-release is available on Blu-ray, writer-director Richard Kelly revealed in a new interview that he does have plans for a true follow-up that will return to this unique universe. While he doesn't offer specifics, the filmmaker explained that it will be even bigger and more ambitious than the original.

"I think there's something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It's big and expensive and I think there's time to get to that. I want to make sure we've got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place. »

Richard Kelly has plans for a Donnie Darko sequel

26 January 2017 6:45 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Director Richard Kelly exploded onto the scene in 2001 with his acclaimed feature debut Donnie Darko, following it up with the divisive Southland Tales in 2006 and the 2009 Richard Matheson adaptation The Box before pretty much disappearing off the radar as he tried unsuccessfully to get several projects off the ground.

Now, chatting to HMV to promote the 4K restoration of Donnie Darko, Kelly has revealed that he has plans for another film set in the same universe, which he plans to focus on once he’s completed his next movie.

“I think there’s something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe,” said the director. “It’s big and expensive and I think there’s time to get to that. I want to make sure we’ve got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we »
