Won Broadway's 1977 Tony Award as Best Score, comprising his lyrics and Charles Strouse's music, for "Annie," a show for which he was also nominated as Best Director (Musical). In 1982, he had similar dual Tony nominations for "The First:" as Best Director (Musical), and, with collaborator Joel Siegel, as Best Book (Musical).
