1911 (2011) Movie Review

15 December 2011 6:46 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

“1911” is a milestone film in two very important ways, marking the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution and the 100th outing for the legendary Jackie Chan, his first as director since “Who Am I?” back in 1998. Charting one of the major turning points in the development of modern China, the film is another in the recent line of big budget patriotic epics, following in the footsteps of the hits “Founding of the Republic” and “Beginning of the Great Revival”, showing the same kind of celebratory air and attention to historical detail. With Chan headlining in a dramatic role, the film also packs in an impressive cast of popular Chinese stars, including Winston Chao (here playing Sun Yat Sen for the fourth time), Li Bing Bing (“Detective Dee”), Jiang Wu (“Let the Bullets Fly”), Joan Chen (“Lust, Caution”), Hu Ge (“Butterfly Lovers”), and his son Jaycee Chan (“Break Up Club”). In charting the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, »

1911 Movie Review

4 October 2011 5:56 AM, PDT | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Title: 1911 Director: Jackie Chan and Zhang Li Cast: Jackie Chan, Bingbing Li, Winston Chao, Joan Chen and Jaycee Chan In the grand tradition of epic films, with epic battles and significant meanings and turning points in history, “1911″ is an exercise in how delicate the balance of success and failure when it comes to movies like these. For “1911,” it’s the latter in terms of execution, performance and pacing, which is embarrassing because the subject matter is too important to modern Chinese history to under shoot. It is a failure in terms of scope and managing to balance the information alone. At the turn of the 20th century, China »

1911 / Xinhai geming Trailer. Jackie ChanLi Zhang‘s 1911 / Xinhai geming (2011) movie trailer stars Jackie Chan, Winston Chao, Jaycee Chan, Li Bing Bing, and Joan Chen. 1911 / Xinhai geming‘s plot synopsis: “ set in the beginning of the 20th century China, the country is split into warring factions, the citizens are starving, and recent political reforms have made matters worse, not better. The ruling Qing Dynasty, led by a seven-year-old emperor, is completely out of touch after 250 years of unquestioned power. With ordinary citizens beginning to revolt openly, the Qing Dynasty has created a powerful, modern army (the “New Army”) to quash any rebellion. But weapons are expensive, and desperate for cash, the Qing leaders are trading anything they can get their hands on with foreign countries… and selling China’s future in the process.”

It is actually refreshing to see Chan in a different type of character role than that of some Hollywood featured, »

Watch the trailer for Jackie Chan's new Chinese historical war epic "1911"

22 September 2011 10:58 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Word has been floating around for months about Jackie Chan's role in "1911," a serious war drama about China's Xinhai Revolution and what is reportedly the martial arts star's 100th film. Now you can get a look at the movie's action-heavy trailer ahead of its October 12 United States release.

In the movie, Chan plays Chinese hero Huang Xing, who was the first army commander-in-chief of the Republic of China, the government of mainland China between 1912 and 1949, which later relocated to Taiwan. Together with Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, played in the movie by Winston Chao, Xing waged war on the Qing Dynasty as part of the successful Xinhai Revolution.

As you might expect, the film is cast almost entirely with Chinese actors, but in addition to Chan, American audiences might also recognize Joan Chen, who had a memorable role on "Twin Peaks" and plays Empress Dowager Longyu in "1911." The movie is being »

Jackie Chan Helps Lead A Revolution In Newest Trailer For 1911

21 September 2011 11:24 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

While his martial-arts skills have always ranked Jackie Chan among the greatest action stars of all time, the Chinese actor is also well known for choosing comedy over drama. Hell, even his more serious films have a sense of levity simply because you can't help but smile and laugh as Chan pulls off death defying stunts and kicks serious ass. Watching the newest trailer for 1911, however, it would seem that this time around we won't be laughing very much. Check out the preview below or in HD over on Apple. In addition to starring, Jackie Chan also co-directed and produced this new film, which is the 100th of his career. Set in 1911 (duh), the movie is about the creation of the Republic of China, when Sun Yat-sen (Winston Chao) led the overthrow of the Qing dynasty. Theatrical Trailer For Jackie Chan’s War Epic ’1911′

20 September 2011 8:27 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

To celebrate his 100th movie, action superstar Jackie Chan has went ahead and directed a big ole war epic. He partners with John Woo‘s Red Cliff cinematographer Li Zhang behind the camera, but also leads on the battlefield. We now have a short teaser and it definitely sells the action moments, but we’ll have to see if Chan can deliver the drama. After starring in crap like The Spy Next Door, he surprised in The Karate Kid update with a tender performance, so I look forward to what he does here. Check it out below via Apple for the film also starring Joan Chen, Lee Bing Bing, Jaycee Chan and Winston Chao.

New Trailer and Poster for Jackie Chan’s 100th Film, 1911

20 September 2011 5:12 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Jackie Chan, consummate martial arts expert and global superstar, is taking on perhaps his biggest role yet.  In 1911, Chan will portray Huang Xing, the first commander-in-chief of the army of the Republic of China, the right hand man of Sun Yat-Sen (played by Winston Chao).  The story of 1911 is being marketed as a historically accurate portrayal of the early 20th century rebellion of the Chinese people against the Qing Dynasty and interfering Western influences.  That last part is particularly interesting as it seems that 1911 will have the same day-and-date release both in the Us and in China. While this may not actually be Jackie Chan’s 100th film, the revolutionary war epic is being billed as such. 1911 also stars Li Bingbing as Xuzong Han, Xing’s wife. Teaser Trailer For 1911 Online

Marking both the hundredth anniversary of the Xinghai Revolution, and the hundredth movie for its director and star, a trailer for Jackie Chan's historical epic 1911 has just arrived online over at Apple. It's Chan's first film as director since 1998 (although he shared behind-the-camera duties with Zhang Li), and co-stars Chan's son Jaycee, Li Bingbing, Winston Chao and Joan Chen. Chan plays Huang Xing, the revolutionary leader and "eight fingered general", who, through a series of violent uprisings, was instrumental in overthrowing the Quing Dynasty and establishing China as a republic. It's unusually serious stuff for the generally knockabout Chan, but on the evidence of the clip, all the better for it. Clearly a labour of love for the director, six months of punishing production finally wrapped in March this year. 1911 will open the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 22, and gets a North American release (in its full form, »

Jackie Chan Goes Back to '1911' China for an Epic War Drama

When I think of Jackie Chan I think of him doing dipsy-doos with chairs and goofing around with Chris Tucker. I don't think of him as a serious actor, though he turned in a decent performance in The Karate Kid. However, he is going beyond playing Mr. Miyagi in a new film he stars in and co-directed with first time director Zhang Li who worked as director of photography on John Woo's Red Cliff. The film is titled 1911 and will be released by Well Go USA and Variance Films in limited theaters on October 7.

Starring alongside Chan are Joan Chen (The Last Emperor, Lust, Caution), Lee Bing Bing (The Forbidden Kingdom), Winston Chao and Chan's 28-year-old son Jaycee Chan who voiced Young Monkey on the direct-to-video feature Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five.
