Mithun Chakraborty was born on June 16, 1947 in Barisal, Bengal Presidency, British India as Gouranga Chakraborti. He is an actor, known for Guru (2007), OMG: Oh My God! (2012) and Gunda (1998). He has been married to Yogeeta Bali since July 1982. They have four children. He was previously married to Helena Luke.

His debut film wasn't Mrigaya (1976). He was a junior artiste in Do Anjaane (starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha) but it released after Mrigaya. He have spent the worst days of my life in Bombay. The period 1970-1972 was the darkest. He had shifted to Bombay to try my luck in films but got no work. Then he joined the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. His classmates were Ranjeeta, Tom Alter... Shabana Azmi was a year senior to him while Naseeruddin Shah was a year junior. Right after he passed out, Mrinalda (Sen) chose him for Mrigaya. He won the National Award (for best actor). He travelled to many festivals with Mrinalda, including Russia.
He started doing street theatre in Calcutta when he was very young. Then he got involved in politics .
IMithun was a typical north Calcutta boy who loved football. He wanted to become a great footballer and join Mohun Bagan. He was quite a good player. A renowned khep player (on hire per match), He used to be paid Rs 5 for quarter-final matches, Rs 10 for semi-finals and Rs 25 for finals. It used to take care of his pocket money. He also wanted to become a political leader... but after working as a junior artiste, he felt like taking up acting as a profession. Baba wanted me to become an engineer. He had even picked up the admission form for an engineering college. But it didn't happen. He also learnt wrestling at one point.
In 2011, Penguin publishing was apparently, going to assign assign somebody to write a book on Mithun. The title has been decided - The Black Moon.
He had mentally prepared himself to adopt the name of Rana Rez. He was popular with the girls at the Institute as Rana and not as Mithun.It was at the instance of Mrinal Sen that he retained his original name Mithun Chakraborty for the screen .

In the Film Institute, Pune Mithun became popular with his amicability. Mrinal Sen had once seen him at the Institute. When Mrinal Sen was looking for a young man with robust feature with rustic looks for his film "Mrigaya", he sent his assistant to get Mithun.
In 2001, Producer Sanjay Chaturvedi signed Mithun for Mujhe Jeene Do. The film was to be shot in Kazakhistan. The film got shelved .
Brother in law name is Pijus Banerjee. He is married to Mithun's sister Kalyani. Kalyani and Pijus have a son named Daebuu Banerjee who debuted as an actor in "Tum Jo Mile". Directed by Fiji Indian director Parm Sivan.
Kalyani Banerjee is Mithun's younger sister. Her son is actor Daebuu Banerjee.
