‘Empire’ Renewed for Fourth Season at Fox

11 January 2017 9:08 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Lyons are coming back for a fourth season of drama and Cookie-isms.

“Empire” has been renewed for Season 4, it was announced Wednesday at the Television Critics Association press tour by Fox Television Group Chairman and CEO Gary Newman. Alongside Newman, Fox exec David Madden said Season 4 will consist of 18 episodes.

The fourth season will return in the 2017-2018 television season. Currently on hiatus, “Empire” returns with the back-half of its third season this spring on Mar. 22.

The renewal is hardly a surprise, as “Empire” is one of the biggest hits to come to network television in the past decade. In its third season, the primetime family soap ranks as the top broadcast drama among adults 18-49 — a title it has held through its entire run. Though its ratings dipped this year, “Empire” still finished out the first half of its third season with nearly 8 million overnight viewers for the midseason finale. For »

Alexis Bledel and Elisabeth Moss Preview Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ (Watch)

7 January 2017 11:14 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Hulu has released the first teaser for its upcoming dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale,” starring Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley, Joseph Fiennes, and the recently revealed Alexis Bledel (among others). The trailer, which you can watch above or on YouTube, introduces us to the fictional world of the Republic of Gilead, the authoritarian theocracy that has supplanted the United States, where women are nothing more than wives, servants, or breeders, referred to as “handmaids.”

Elisabeth Moss’ Offred is one such handmaid. “I had another name, but it’s forbidden now,” Offred explains in the trailer. “So many things are forbidden now.” Offred once had a husband, and child, we see, who were taken from her. She and the other handmaids are overseen by Aunt Lydia (Anne Dowd), who intones, “Ordinary is just what you’re used to.”

‘Gilmore Girls’ Star Alexis Bledel Joins Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

5 January 2017 8:45 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Alexis Bledel has signed onto her first gig after Netflix’s “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” revival.

The fan-favorite TV star has joined Hulu’s upcoming dystopian series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Variety has learned.

She joins star Elisabeth Moss in the 10-episode series, along with Joseph Fiennes, Samira Wiley and Yvonne Strahovski. The streaming series is set to debut on April 26, 2017.

Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, “The Handmaid’s Tale” follows Offred, a handmaid played by Moss, who is forced into subjugation in an attempt to repopulate the fictional, male-dominated society of Gilead. Bledel will play Ofglen, Offred’s (Elisabeth Moss) fellow handmaid and companion. At first, Ofglen seems like a pious rule-follower, loyal to the oppressive Gilead system, but she turns out to be daring and subversive. Bledel joins in a recurring role.

Hulu gave a straight-to-series order to “The Handmaid’s Tale” in April 2016. The series hails from MGM Television. Bruce Miller »

These are the new TV shows to look out for this year, from American Gods to 24: Legacy...

New Year. Every other ad slogan you see is screaming about the possibilities of a new you. A slimmer, happier, more accomplished you, one free of flab and toxins and bad habits. The fraudulent notion of the detox is everywhere, promising a simultaneously cleanse of both your soul and your colon.

There is however, one useful place to apply the insidious ‘detox’: TV viewing.

A combination of end-of-year exhaustion, festivities and time off work can lead to weakness of resolve when it comes to television. Turkey comas and lunchtime drinking make us susceptible to the sort of shows that we wouldn’t ordinarily watch. »
